Triumph Silver Jubilee Bonneville (T140VJ) - Light Renovation - Part 5 - Front End Parts Preparation

Фильм және анимация

Following the strip of the front end, now it's the laborious job of sprucing the parts up ready for a bit of build and installation - that's when it gets a bit more motivating. Any problems this time? Only with me!

Hi,Angus. It is good to see the Jubilee coming along nicely. I can clearly remember looking at a brand new one of these in a local dealer's showroom window as a 16 year old lad. That damage at the top of the fork housing is sure to be some brute trying to pry the seal out with a screwdriver. It isn't a stressed area so the Araldite will be fine. A more involved method would be either strip down the fork leg and Tig weld the damaged area and re-fettle it or fit a thin walled(say0.5mm) steel sleeve over it.

Hi Howard thanks for the kind comment and other options re the crack. It was agreed with the owner to just use a simple method to stabilise it but if it does worsen then agreed your suggestions would come into play.

Put rattle cans in a pan of hot water [not quite boiling], Shake them every 10-20 seconds until can is nice and hot. It will give the the paint for a much better coverage. More important when it is very cold so not applicable here. The can will not explode unless it is TOO hot

Thanks for the comment and interest. I agree with warming paint if required hence leaving the cans in the sun in this case.

hi Angus JB weld is the way to go with that fork slider not araldite, it can and will deterioate over time and can be come unstable if in contact with oil, but with JB weld will get better over time and not bothered at all with oil, and i would use an airbrush as a touch up on the wheels with that blue its a lot less messy with masking tape plus the blue on the wheels are original and it would be a crying shame to cover the paint up. just my thoughts but looking forwards to see the finished project take care Angus,

Thanks for the comment and suggestions. We don’t think the crack will worsen as it was probably caused by ham-fisted oil seal replacement. Not sure what to do yet regarding the rim paint - like you I like to preserve factory paint but the touch up and poor ish match might prevent that.

Hello Angus, If they are the original metalastic bushes in the top yoke, i would be amazed if they are not shot. I always replace them as a matter of corse. They are not dear and Tricor Andy does a removal tool. Cheers.

Hi VC - I do have replacements in stock but those already fitted are still good. Sometimes they do deteriorate badly I agree but sometimes not - the rubber is shielded from UV - I suppose it’s what weather and other fluids have got in in the past such as hydraulic from a leaky master cylinder/reservoir for instance.

You could have drilled and tapped that crack with a BA screw, looks as if there is enough meat for the screws. That would have tidied up that crack as well and prevented it from causing any more damage.

Thanks for the comment and interest David. Yes we could have taken a different approach with your suggestion or JB weld but it’s not a stress fracture so think we’re ok stabilising as is without compromising the seal and having to strip. Let’s see.

It was a good weekend for painting, I did my BSA Bantam yokes, in the garden. I experienced the weirdest of problems, the dip tube inside the aerosol must have detached, it would spray inverted but in upright mode just gas. Bit of a challenge painting with an upside down can! When you've got it together any chance of putting it alongside the A70 and comparing frames? It would be interesting to see if any frame seat height lowering mods are discernible?

Hi Andrew - the joys of cans. One of mine on this job just decided to start leaking all over my hands! Let me think about the A70 comparison - there is a chance it’ll be back in the garage briefly towards end of month to compare when I dig it out for the show at the end of the month.
