Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE | DE-CAT With The Free Spirits H-Pipe! And, manuals manuals manuals!?!

One major complaint about the Scrambler 1200 is the heat of the exhaust, especially at the headers. For one reason or another Triumph put the Cat right next to your knee, and no amount of shielding or options seems to really cut down on that heat. I took the bike out for a before and after ride to compare the temperatures while I install the Freespirits H-Pipe. I definitely recommend this change for you Scrambler.
Also, I go on a bit of a rant about manuals for the Triumph Scrambler, so check that out.

@8:32 - the engine will not "rebalance" or "retune" itself for the change of headers. The closed-loop self-tuning system is only effective at idle and tiny throttle openings at very low revs - it's actually there to keep the exhaust gas temperatures HOT enough so when the engine is not under load, the catalytic converter stays "lit up". Only the Manifold Absolute Pressure map (MAP map!) is tuned - as soon as you start giving it any meaningful throttle, the ECU switches to the static TPS/RPM maps.

FYI, those gaskets on the head itself (the copper crush donuts) should be replaced for a good seal. Everything else (graphite gaskets etc.) can be reused as long as they aren't damaged.

Definitely true, the service manual says to go ahead and use grease (or petroleum jelly) to reuse them, but new is better. The ones on there were recently replaced as well so I didn't have any more on hand. So far no leaks that I've found.

@@UnknownOverLand The sealing comes from the deformation of the metal, I can see grease getting hot and leaving sludge behind which can seal it up as well but I don't know how long I could count on that =) If you start hearing backfires, you know what's up. Cheers and keep up the great work with the videos!

I did the h-pipe and the dresser bar at the same time so it went pretty well. I wish I had bought the gasket between the header pipes though. It was a bit of a pain to remove. I also added a DNA air filter and a booster plug.

Getting those gaskets just right is definitely a pain, next time I plan to do any work around the exhaust I may just get some to have on a shelf in case. I’ve had my eye on the booster plug as well as the filter (and perhaps removing the snorkel). I’m really interested in the booster and how that works out. I was going to just remove the snorkel but weather here is pretty unpredictable so I didn’t want to find a ton of road snow/rain/mud on my battery.

@@UnknownOverLand I did the snorkel too. From what I have read the Booster Plug tricks the ECU that the air is colder than it really is and therefore gives it more fuel when accelerating. At constant throttle the O2 sensor takes over.

The snorkel is supposed to change a bit of the pattern of how the air flows around that area with it's diverters. But perhaps that's a bit more of a worry about the filter itself than the battery compartment. I'll probably have to go ahead and give these a try!

I have the arrow exhaust on my xe. Not sure yet on weather that was the right way to go but it is more responsive, just not sure if I like the way it sounds. Been looking at TECs 2 into one, really like the way it looks.

I had an arrow exhaust on my Street Triple R years ago and really liked it, but I know how those drone sounds can some times just get annoying. The TEC 2-into-1 looked and sounded like it'd be an awesome choice. De-Catting the bike was the best choice I made to finally relieve some of the heat by my leg.

If you pulled over on highway measured temperature especially of the catalytic converter within seconds you would find Cat temp much hotter than in your garage. The Cat really heats up when it's being worked hard

You’re definitely right. When you’re doing 80MPH on the highway, with wind and everything else, and can still feel the excessive heat on your leg that temp must be crazy.

If you weren’t wearing long pants, you’d likely get a pretty good burn even from the heat shielding after a long enough ride. Removing the cat helps quite a bit, but that seems less than ideal.

@@UnknownOverLand If you ever want to print the manual from Triumph I suggest you buy a laser printer, never use a inkjet printer the cost of ink is insane. I have a Brother L6200 42 pages a minute, you need about four reams of paper, pay the $45 for the day and print the manual. I agree renting time to view a manual seams like a way for Triumph to make a lot of money, it should be free for their customers.

Sorry that I missed this comment, but you're totally right. Just taking it over to a Kinko's or whatever those stores are is way more cost effective than even wasting money renting from Triumph. I did pick up the Haynes manual which seems to work so far for most things I've needed.
