Triumph Bonneville T120 Review, Straight to the point, why I bought one.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thinking about buying a Triumph Bonneville T120? Here are my quick straight to the point reasons for buying a Triumph Bonneville T120 motorcycle and why you may want one as well, or not. No ads, not promos, just straight to the point. Lots of reviews give you statistics, and numbers. In this video I try to put it in plain language why I like this bike, and am happy to ride and own it, and why I feel it's a great all-around type of motorcycle. Well looks like KZread has decided to put in ads, anyways, :( youtube.

I own a 2018 T120 and it’s my 17th bike in 41 years of motorcycling. Having ridden dual-purpose, standard, cruiser, sport and sport touring motorcycles, I would rank my T120 near the top for many of the same reasons mentioned in your video. At nearly 70 years of age my requirements for the “perfect motorcycle” have evolved, somewhat reluctantly but by necessity, with my aging body. When I began shopping for a new bike in 2018 I had narrowed down my choices to the Honda CB1100 and the T120. I owned a 1981 Honda CB750K and some of its characteristics and fond memories (touring from Virginia to Daytona for Bike Week) drew me to the new CB1100. However I have always admired the classic look of the Bonneville since the late 60’s, and one with 1200cc’s, fuel injection, cruise control, heated grips, etc., etc. looked hard to resist. I test rode both bikes back to back on the same day and the Bonny won my heart over - no contest. I now have 13,000 miles of every kind of riding, except off-road, and dearly love this bike. I am considering the suspension upgrade, but am otherwise very content with my T120.

Well said. I really liked how you mentioned "evolved" maybe that's exactly it. Many comments here talk about always finding the perfect bike, maybe we can only find a perfect bikes for a certain amount of time, and then we evolve, and that s the only constant, is that we have to keep changing...something to ponder, great comment, thank you.

Nothing beats the classic look of the T120. Yesterday I had a wedding party doing pictures in the local park as the wife and I were sharing a picnic lunch. They approached us and wanted to use my T120 Black as a prop for pictures of the bride and groom. Too cool.

I agree completely with your assessment of the T120. It’s my third bike and by far the one I’m most passionate about. From my first test ride it just felt like the perfect bike for me. The look, the feel, the sound, the build quality and the ergonomics. To me it represents what motorcycles used to be before the market got so splintered and specialized. The T120 is just the perfect all around bike.

The format and content of your review was by far the best I’ve seen on KZread. With regards to the T120, I think you hit the nail on the head! The only thing I can add to the plus side of the T120 equation is the nostalgia factor. When I was a kid in the 1960s, I would drool over photos of Triumph Bonnevilles in the motorcycle magazines that I read incessantly. Today, at the age of 63, I finally own one! I bought a 2022 T120 last week. The T120 is the essence of simple and pure motorcycling joy. For me, it’s also like a magic time machine that makes me feel like a 12-year-old again. Thanks again for an excellent review.

Thanks so much for your comment and congrats! Well said on "simple and pure joy". The moment I stopped caring about the mechanical specs and electronics hype that comes with every video, and just forgot about it, I think that's when I realized how much I enjoy just riding it and just being out there, just for what it is. Kind of why I started riding in the first place. Stay safe and enjoy!

Really appreciated this video. I could feel your heart felt sentiment towards the T120. I'm 6 months away from my full licence here in Sydney Australia, been researching bikes for months and am very keen on Triumph as a brand and the T120 Bonneville / Scramblers in particular. And, by the way, that's a beautiful looking town you're riding around in.

I have just purchased a '22 T120. I'll pick it up in the morning from the dealer. I'm 67 and have been ridding since 1966, mini bikes to enduros to street bikes. I also own and ride a 2020 rocket 3r which I ride almost every day. I wanted a bike a bit smaller, more nimble for city traffic and beautiful... I intend to ride the T120 around town, errands, appointments, pleasure etc... the bike is fun to ride, reminds of my early days of bike ridding, the T120 is comfortable, light and has plenty of power. A perfect combination. :)

I've owned my T120 since 2019, and you nailed it. When it comes to bikes, character is king. The great thing about the T120 is how it blends that character with refinement. Shifting, braking, twisting the throttle...it all feels positive and satisfying without ever crossing the line to clunky and agricultural. The stock exhaust has a lovely note without being too loud. It's comfortable. But perhaps best of all, it's sheer pleasure both fast and, more importantly, slow. Not many bikes can claim the latter.

I have to do several long distances frequently, obviously I can’t take for that purpose the T120. But I own one and spite the fact that I don’t ride it so often as I would like to, I keep it and it’s peace of art and machinery that will always fascinates me, like the first time I saw it at the dealership and asked if it was available to buy and it was. I almost felt at that moment a belonging feeling that never sensed with other bikes. A connection that owning the bike was confirmed with enormous strength till today. It’s easy, it’s responsive, it’s relaxing it’s strong and solid. Overall, more than just a bike. I hope that I can do well enough to never have the need to sell my T120. Thanks for the video. It tells a lot of what this fantastic machine is about and translates thoughts that I share and have related to my experience as a biker on a T120. ✌️✌️

Thanks for writing and sharing. I think you said it great, it becomes more than a bike, it's great to just to even admire the engineering and pretty much all-in-all is a piece of art. Love this video! Subscribed. I've seen so many videos talking about specs and performance, but your video is one of the few that talks about how the bike makes you feel. I'm 54 and just started street riding last year on a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT (650lbs!). It's fine at speed but doesn't generate any kind of emotion. And super heavy! I'm interested in something lighter, more fun, better looking, maybe less of a "Dad bike"? I remember seeing a T120 at a dealership last year and was practically drooling at how beautiful it was. Your video has got me close to pulling the trigger. Hope you make more videos!

I tend to very easily get lost in the specs myself, and then I end up with a bike that is supposed to be "THE" bike, and then I ride and wonder why I bought it. That's why I wanted to share this video, to basically talk about that a little vs. mechanics. Glad to hear you're riding! Stay safe.

Awesome video. Thank you for your honest review. I had a special edition 2015 t214. I loved it, knowing when I bought it, that it was last year for many things, it was air cooled, 5 speed, and the shifting was clunky. I added a small dart shield to help break the wind, and an LED headlamp, that was needed. I sold her this summer and invested the money, and just last week bought the T120 Bud Ekins special edition. It's in Iowa, and I'm going to take the train from Boston to Iowa, and ride her home. I'm ready for the adventure, and happy to have my new upgraded Triumph !

I honestly do not know of another bike that combines comfort, power, the breeze and wind, and just that "out there" feeling without the cruiser back pain. I owned a different a bike when the T120 was released, and when I read about it, saw it, that was it. Within a couple of years, I knew I just had to have it, I sat on it at the dealer, sold. A time will come when u will think is there something better... we all do :). Go to a bike show, test ride a few, and when you get home pull out the t120, take a quick ride, and you will be reassured it was the right choice. It's my ninth bike, there may be more :), but unless I'm homeless, it's staying.

Thanks for your comments. Mine is a 2018. They did have a couple glitches on the first models, so I would say 2018 and up is good. Is the price justified in the US? Honestly, it's probably around 14K with taxes and financing. plus any accessories right? Well, being that all bikes lose value initially when purchased I would say it really depends on how long you think you may have it around. It's a 1200cc motor with 6 gears, which I would say can stick around for quite a bit. My thoughts have always been that a 2-3 year old bike is a great value to buy as it already absorbed some of the loss, but just like any other premium brand, it's always more. It's the look, the feel, the bike. Some people just want to have a new bike all to themselves, right? However, there are now t120's on the used market with low mileage and a couple of years on them for under 10K, and to those I say, yes yes yes.

Hi , Iiked and subscribed. I appreciate your views , i owned at the same time (all insured and on the road ) a wr250r, 02 Road King , 09 Fz1. Sold the 2 Yamaha’s , kept the RK , I like so many bikes and I am looking for that unicorn. I want to keep the RK as it is so comfortable and great for 2 up but looking for that in between smaller bike . I am thinking sv650, v-strom 650 , I love the look of your Triumph , maybe the smaller t100’s or that more cruiser look bonneville , forgot the model name . The Kawasaki 900 looks nice to . I prefer (maybe cause I’m older ) the look of a round headlight still . Anyway thanks for the content . I did really like both Yamaha’s, just no decent dirt trails for the wr and the FZ1 was fun just to much motor for my in town and little excursions and I want more comfort .

Thanks for sharing, I would agree. Hard to only have one bike. A comfortable 2 up bike is always a good investment, but not for all riding scenarios. If you got a great bigger bike, the t100 or the street twin, or even the w800 are nice classic additions. Although I do appreciate the mechanical reliability of the Japanese bikes.

I felt I couldn’t trust the bike so got rid of it. @@marcbranchaud4408 Thanks for commenting. Looks like you have experienced some of the common problems riders have been posting. While I have not experienced these issues on mine, the fact some riders are reporting them makes me think, there is an issue. The brakes, for me at least, work great. I have not had moisture but my bike is garaged so, I'm not sure if that is a factor. The gear selector, that is something Triumph should take care of. I agree. If you cant trust the brand, no bike will be good. And while I get pure joy out of the t120, I would not buy a Tiger, as I would expect a bike like that to handle anything, and I am not sure if Triumph brand is up to that challenge. I just put 500 down on a 2022 T120. I’m excited but am now doubting my decision as well. Too many cool bikes. I really wanted the Indian Chief but it’s just too damn expensive. I feel with the T120 I’m getting the best all around bike but still retaining the charm of retro looks. The only thing I don’t like about it is the tubed tires and that coming from shaft drive, I’m gonna have to learn about chain maintenance. Ill have a couple weeks to think about my decision. Great video. If you want to ride good, you have to feel good. And to feel good, you have to look good.

Coming from a BMW, the shaft and tubeless tires I do miss. Because I'm 80/20 Street/Touring, it does not make much difference, but if I was going 1000+ miles, it would be another story for tires. If it's something that will bug, the r nine t pure is also a great bike, that has the shaft and the tubeless tires. Love my 2016 T120 and have had no problems with it. It was one of the first two delivered in the state. I did find the handling to be just a little vague in corners, but this turned out to be a characteristic of the original equipment Pirelli tires. Handling is great now with a set of Avon AM26 Roadrider tires. These are available in the original sizes. Edit: Avon AM26 tires are no longer made, replaced in the Avon line by the Roadrider II.

At the end of the day if you are so glad you own a Boneville, you have the perfect bike for you. I love the looks of a Bonneville, and the T120 Gold Line would be my choice. As far as platic turn indicators, all bikes I think have plastic turn indicators. Asfar as spoked wheels, they give the Bonneville the right look, the proper British motorcycle. The only thing I do not care for are the tube tires, but that's the price you pay to have the spoked wheels. I wish somebody could make mag wheels that look like a spoked wheel so we could run tubeless tires and still look good. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it. Ride safe and enjoy every journey. Thanks for a great review. I own 2 1979 Triumph T140D and a 2013 Norton 961. The Brit iron parallel twin is all I know, and like you, am searching for the perfect bike. The T140s are light, nimble, a blast. I even often go with a pillion and with the upgraded shocks, its not horrible. That said, 2 on a highway at only 47 HP, they are a little weak. The Norton, EFI @ 80 HP is a pure joy and is comfortable at 85mph and doesn't crack a sweat at 110. Top end about 130....but can't throw me missus on the back. So....liking to break the ton alone, occasionally scrape a peg on a twistie, go two up a few time per year, I'm giving the T120 some serious thought. Here comes that dreaded cliche immature question....Do you know the top end? Ever open it up on the open highway for S***s and giggles? Also, what was your suspension upgrade. Thanks for a REAL review. Not some sticky sweet gentlemanly review afraid to point out pitfalls like you're a traitor to Queen and country.

Does the newer 120 not have stainless steel spokes? My 2005 t100 has stainless spokes and they look as good now as new. Now there are a couple places on the chromed rims that were left unattended by previous owner, where a bit of rust started and polish wasn't done well enough. But that's hardly noticeable. But the spokes are perfect. And 2005 was a while ago. So I wouldn't worry.

In all honesty, the r1250r is superior in many ways to the t120 IMHO. It's a great bike, but it feels like it has more of sport-bike roots and more comparable to the speed triple. I feel like I'm on a motorcycle when I am doing about 65 Mph or more on the R series bikes. Engine, rider position, feels more sporty. I think the Triumph here is more of a relaxed around town ride, with highway ability, the r1250r, again IMHO thrives at higher speeds, owns it. As far as suspension, the front fork update is the most noticeable, I upgraded to progressive springs and it was night and day difference. I did Hagon Nitros in the rear, but they didn't quite pan out, so I will be changing those out at some point. The r1250r is def a go anywhere, do anything bike, but that sporty feel is not for everyone. The R nine T Pure, maybe more of a comparable bike possibly. Hope that helps.

Ramblin Man!, Thanks so much for your comment! My big thing with the T120 was that it was an around town bike, but the 1200CC was great for weekend get aways, and higher speeds. The T100 is a great choice, but sometimes the price is so close for used, you might as well get the T120. It's also not my only bike, but the only one I refuse to sell, even today at these prices. The W800 is an awesome bike, very retro feel, VERY RETRO, down to the vibrating mirrors, however if you're into it and the basic electronics, it's a steal for the price, and you will love it. It's a new old bike that works EVERY time and so much fun! It's one of the few Kawasaki bikes I loved testing out. I was a BIG fan of the W650 back in the day, but then it was a collectors bike, and over priced at that time. If I was looking for an around town bike and did not own the Bonneville, I would say the W800 is a serious competitor to the T100, if you take out the modern electronics and Triumph heritage. I have to give Triumph credit there. But I would take a W800 ANY day, ANY over a Royal Enfield, even over the Honda. I started out on Kawasaki, so maybe something there. As far as the Vulcan, I have not ridden it, looks a little similar to the Indian Scout Sixty, but cannot comment unless I ride right? Hope this helps! Ride safe!

@@bike_addict thanks for your comments. I’ve gotten similar feedback from other Bonneville owners that have said go for the T120 if the little extra $ doesn’t bother me. I think the extra power if I need it and the 6th gear make it worthwhile. I’ve ridden Japanese metric bikes my whole life until I bought my Harley-Davidson Heritage a couple of years ago. Now I’m thinking a classic British motorcycle like the Triumph Bonneville is worth a try as a second smaller bike to run around on. Definitely don’t agree about carrying a pillion. I’ve upgraded the front springs to progressive, but back are stock. With a few clicks it has been perfect for my 5’9” 180 (triathlete frame). My daughter rides on the back, I’ve added saddle bags of two different sizes, and it has been basically my work truck on two wheels. With the X-Pipe, BC Sleeper Pros, and a few pretty mods, it’s a daily rider for around town, and a road triper. We’ve gone highway speed in middle America for 350 miles in a day (windy miles. The MPGs are not what a smaller CC bike will get, but compared to my F350 diesel, this is excellent. And perfect for our current duel situation in America. My vehicles need to be useful and not just pretty toys. The T120 is robust and handles everything. My body can’t take super long road trips (that’s what a Tiger is for), but the bike can do any except, maybe, zipping around trying to act like a sport bike. Love the T120….and with nearly 4500 miles Since July of 2021, I’m learning to use it in every possible situation!

@@bike_addict I presently have a 2012 T100 Black which I love (Fun bike) but I'm thinking to upgrading to the T120... at high speeds (over 55) I feel I really could use the 6th speed. There is vibration in the handlebars and and pegs and I can get up to 70 at 40rpms but I feel I'm really pushing the bike on the highway as cars zoom past... I'm an older rider and it feels a bit dangerous. Does the T120 feel comfortable 70-80 on the highway? Or does it have similar vibrations and would I not really gain anything by upgrading? I know the T120 is heavier and that may help plus the 6th gear....Any thoughts.... Thanks.

Paul. I've ridden a 2014 t100 a couple of times, it's a neat bike. The T120 is a world away from the 2012. Engine is different, better, more powerful, with less heat, and better gearing. I came to Triumph from BMW, The GS was too big for around town rides, so I wanted a happy medium... a bike that can be fun in-town and able to do weekend longer trips and highway trips. I love the 6th gear on in, it's a must. At 80 mph, you're at about 3K RPM, no vibrations on the handle bars, pegs. It's a whole different machine. I have a windscreen and a full face helmet, I've gone 90mph+ for over an hour and in fact once I slowed down to 75, it felt like it was in its comfort zone. I say 55-75mph, you can do all day. If you want to go faster, the only thing is wind resistance, the machine itself is more than capable. I did get a steering damper for the highway, and new fork springs, that was a good improvement. I wish these bikes came with tubeless tires. That to me is one of the few things that holds it back. I also do not enjoy a pillion on it at high speeds, def a perfect solo bike on the highway, two-up on two lane roads. SO to answer your question, it will be a very significant difference from the T100, will it feel like a Goldwing, or a TIger? Hmm not really. You will have more wind resistence and be more in the elements. The touring and adv bikes have more wind protection, but are taller and heavier. Will you be able to go on a 200-300 mile weekend ride on the T120? 100% Yes.

What about the throttle, is it as anarchy at low speeds as others claim? I’m curious about the brand new T120 2021 and it’s fueling, if it changed at all.

  • @bike_addict

Coming from a previous bike that had a cabled throttle. The ride-by-wire to me is great at higher speeds for longer rides, easy on the wrist compared to my BMW. It is sensitive, so it's easier to accelerate, however at slower speeds, it gets torquey, so to speak, the engine is powerful. If you switch the ride modes and throttle in place, you can get a decent feel for the difference in throttle response from rain to ride mode, and it is a difference. As far as MPG, I've been getting upper 40's-low 50's best, not sure how others are claiming 65MPG plus,. I'm calculating with start up, and taking an average over 1k miles, vs one trip or just a highway MPG. Other than that, best to get on one and try it out.

@@alexred09 The 6th gear and top end performance, longer distance interstate travel is what the t120 will give you, that extra horsepower on the Speed Twin really makes the bike quick, I would compare it to another awesome bike I just loved to test ride, maybe not to own, the Indian FTR, thrilling. Great choice with the Street Twin, I would say that's the best buy in that class.

Ken, yes i did. Street twin was fun. It's the 6th gear and top end performance that takes the T120 from an "around town" to a "around town plus weekend touring trips" bike IMHO. It's a big big difference on the highway at 65-85mph. Not that you cannot take a t100/ST on a longer trip at highway speeds, just more comfortable, stable on the t120, still need windshield. For the $1500 price difference, it's a huge upgrade over the t100, I feel I get more out of it because the 6th gear and 1200 engine. I can take it more places, have a pillion, and will get more use out of it. T100 and street twin, both great bikes, and Street Twin, I think, better value for the money, again my opinion. Ride safe!

It depends on your type of riding I think. I got a t120 and in hindsight, a t100 would have been better for my type of riding (twisties, mountain and country roads. No highway. No 2up).

Jack, thanks for writing. This will be my fourth summer with mine. I get it. I owned a Triumph before the t120, sold it (beat myself up over it, over and over). Since then I bought two BMW's, kept one, sold other, test rode Indians (balls on fire), Harley's, the t120 is my ninth bike. A time always comes when you're thinking, what else is out there? I totally get it. In truth, I'm not sure one man can be satisfied with only ONE bike. One of my favorite Harley's to ride is the 2018+ Fatbob, or the Slim, I really felt that similar feeling, loved the Fatbob, however heavy, clutch is a bitch, can't ever find neutral, and bulky to maneuver, under powered, and unfortunately my experience with H-D dealers has been less than great. Just my humble opinion. Every time I get the itch, I go and test ride a few bikes, and then when I get home, I'm always kinda glad I got the Bonneville. Quick, comfortable, it's the gentleman's cruiser. But the only way you'll know is if you go test out some others. Unless you're touring, the T120 is a 80% around town, maybe 20% touring, and maybe not even that. I just like riding it, and forgetting about everything else. Anyways, ride safe, thanks for sharing, and if you do sell, well, it's just a bike, as long as you feel awesome on it, it could be a Yamaha. :)

.....problem is, when you're ready to sell a Triumph the resale isn't what it is with Japanese bikes or Harley's. I'm not a Harley fan. I think their way over-hyped. Especially when you compare Harley to Triumph. Triumph is twice the quality and three times the appearance. It's trying to find someone in your area willing to pay you anything close to the average market value for what is otherwise a like new pre owned low mileage Triumph. It's not fair. Unfortunately, Triumph sucks when it comes to the original owner resale value. You will lose money on the NEW costs and you'll lose money on the resale. You buy a Triumph, expect to lose a minimum of 40-45% of the price paid new.

Not here in Chicago and in many places actually. I just looked at and test road a few 2020 T120s, 2018s, and they were selling like hotcakes on consignment for 11k and 10.5k. I decided to buy a new one and got the dealer down $800, so am only paying 12k but with a trade in Harley that wouldn’t sell even after price drops. It had tons of customized items as well. I’m at least getting a great deal on the trade in. Maybe if I waited for a little warmer weather the bike would have sold, anyways, I’m super pumped for picking her up this week. It was a difficult decision between the new Triumph Speedmaster. That comfort seat and the new styling, same engine…I was going to get the silver tank goldline, but I’m 98% getting the T120 over it.

Everything is just rainbows and lollipops until that dreaded moment where your transmission won't downshift and then you start researching all the problems people are having with their Transmissions. Then the dreaded moment when your warranty is over and your reaching into your own pocket to fix your transmission, and Triumph refuses to acknowledge it should be a recall issue.

Although I used to have a R1150R BMW where the fuel plastic quick connects would crack and ignite, and BMW also did a poor job on it. Have you experienced this issue?
