These is a landfill site on a mine in Zambia where there are a dozen Leyland dozers buried, powered by Rolls Royce Merlin engines. The last one that could run was used to dig the big hole, and tow the others to the site, before being parked there, and the replacement Galion dozers then filled in the hole, bought there as they were cheaper to operate, and much longer service intervals than the temperamental Merlin engines. The old ones were buried, as the cost to ship them out, to scrap them, was more than what they would fetch as scrap steel, so they got buried on the mine instead. Probably still there in the mine area to this day, as the copper mines dumped tailings over the area soon after.

Interesting story. Those engines would been Meteors i.e., the nonsupercharged derivative of the Merlin, which would not require avgas and could possibly have operated with a lower pressure cooling system.

Could they have been Vickers Vigor dozers ? They had 4 and 6 cyl diesel Rolls Royce engines

Fowler crawlers were later owned by British Leyland but like the Challenger 33 Dozer had a Leyland Engine

Leyland dozers ? Rolls Royce Merlin?..I think there is enough space in those areas ,that to bury something is the real cost , even in those days...

If y'all haven't seen Alistair's excavator model collection look for it on here... quite impressive.

Really enjoyed seeing these vintage machines, they are special in their own right. Equally impressive was the model section, seeing all those models I am glad other like minded people are giving these machines and models the love they deserve (esp after all their hard work :))

Served my time as a Plant Fitter with a local civil engineering contractor, they had 3 Poclains. TCS with a an Alstom air cooled engine, TY45 built by Winget in Kent with a Ford 4cylinder engine and an HC 30 this had a 3 cylinder air cooled Deutz. All impressive performers, used the strange deep red Texaco red hydraulic oil - double the price of the regular Tellus 30 all the other plant used.

I'm impressed that these machines were not scrapped as they replaced with newer equipment. Such a niche thing to have and look after. Can't imagine cost of ownership nowadays.

Cheers Alli, some good machines there, we had Poclain and Ackerman on the opencast many years ago, I liked them but they were always giving trouble, a lot of them ended up working their lives out in Scrap yards. That 4 wheel drive Tipper looked like the Fiat Autocarro, we had one with a Hiab Crane, Iveco Diesel Turbo would go just about anywhere.

Poclain to the French is like CAT to and American. French people used to call all forklifts Clark because of the early impact Clark made on their market place.

Thanks for this video. The Poclain excavators appeared here in NZ🇳🇿 at the beginning of the 70s but only seemed to stay on the market for a year or two. I suspect that their decision to concentrate on hydraulic components rather than complete equipments was correct, given that they are still in business.

Remember seeing poclain excavators working for McCormick demolition here in ireland when I was young.Also seen yumbo,international, & john deere excavators but not seen any in years.

Hey Allistair thanks very much for sharing this video brought back some memories as i used to operate the the first Poclain 400 that came to Australia . I worked it at the Northwest gas project in the North west of Australia for Leighton Contractors . It was an Excavator then it was swaped to a shovel

I seem to remember a very big Deutz engined excavator located in a slate quarry in the southern end of The Lake District in the UK. My memory is vague but the excavator stood out a lot. It wasn't then operating within the quarry but was functional. I have no idea what the excavator was though. Must be over ten years ago or more when I spotted it. The same quarry also had some all wheel drive Deutz trucks for hauling slate blocks from that same quarry.

Class, I remember poclain machines from my childhood. What a treat to be invited to that show. Hope you took your wallet with you to buy some of them models!! Cheers

As a kid my dad took me to work after hours and he allowed me to operate an Atlas crane (on the works flatbed) and a Poclain 60, in later years a 75. Not big but happy times none the less!

In the early 80’s I ran a 1200. UN stoppable…..It was a union job and the machine was so big it required a second man , an oiler, to run the machine with me.

@Military Museum I assume the very large machine you operated was the P&H 1200. At that point in time the P&H 1200 was one of the big boys of hydraulic excavators and shovels. There were bigger and more powerful hydraulic machine s available however. Most of the machines larger than the P&H 1200 were manufactured by DEMAG. The good thing about the size of the 1200 was it could be used in heavy construction work as well as mining operations. It was available in backhoe as well as shovel configuration. One of the main competitors of the P&H 1200 was the Koehring 1466 which was also available in backhoe or shovel configuration. The big Koehring machines were very popular back in the 70’s and 80’s. I believe the big seller for Koehring was its 1266D model. Only available in backhoe configuration, but it could dig to a depth of just shy of 40 feet.Bucket size was normally about 8 cubic yards. Overall operating weight was 130 tons. Getting back to the machine you operated, I once came across an advertisement in a construction magazine, about the P&H 1200. P&H was making the claim that on many excavation projects there was no need to blast rock formations, etc. Due to the heavy duty hydraulic power of the 1200. That advertisement also featured a color drawing of the 1200 in backhoe configuration digging through a large rock formation. No Doubt about it, that machine you operated in the early 80’s was a real powerhouse. I would be interested to know if your machine was in face shovel configuration or set up as a backhoe. I’m interested because every photo that I’ve seen in books or magazines show the P&H 1200 set up as a face shovel. Only in that advertisement, did I ever see it in backhoe form.

I love these machines from around the world! The largest machine I ever operated was a Komatsu PC 1000. It was very intimidating at the time because I was quite a bit younger.

Now, this is awesome. I believe at this same show they display the extremely rare and very known to exist P10/P20/P30 Wheel loaders by CMC-Poclain or at least an "attempt" to get them into the market but failed. I follow the email newsletter from the Forums. They are VERY good-looking/designed machines... Only if i could own one in the USA! But at the very least i have one in Farming Simulator 19. LOL. That Display of the scale toys is INSANE!!! Holy crap. He must have every scale possible.

This is awesome to see, didn't know a thing like that would ever exist. But it's pretty slick that it does. As a farm kid, and still live and work on the family farm, it was always awesome to see the old stuff still hangin with the biggins. We still run some old iron, 60's 70's and 80's type agri stuff, and tbh it seems better than our newer New Holland stuff. Oddly enough easier to get parts for, and a hell of a lot easier to work on, especially in the field. I'm in Canada, but one of our neighbours had a scraper with twin deutz V8's, awesome to hear it fire up early in the mornin. Either way, was a nice nostalgia trip to watch. That would be a great show to visit. A big variety of machinery on show. Long way to come from Australia though. Wouldn't mind the heat we get up close to 50C where I live. Mid 30's pretty average. Love that little machine on the old army style truck.

I was going to head to this, Engines passion event but had work commitments. I have a big fondness for poclain as the 90ckb was the first digger I ever drove when I was about 7.

In a way Poclain started off making Ducks with the ww2 surplus GMC CCKW lorry mounted diggers (same lorry the Seleni and Roadless tractor axles came from)

Great video been a poclain fan all my life especially the 1000 we had a poclain 60ckb on the farm when I was growing up that’s what I cut my teeth on but currently own and operate on a daily basis hitachi -7

Obviousy some solid steel used on the digger to get it to 190 ton because it looks about the same size as a komatsu pc 1000 which is a hundred tonner.
