Great video, Marty. You really know how to enjoy life.I rent a 33 foot Formula in Newport when i visit, and I am planning on making this trip soon. Is early May a good time?

Just about anytime is good to go in a 33' Formula. Nice! For me, it's all about the sea conditions, smooth-go, rough-no go. Sometimes we get June gloom in May, but that's ok, just wear a jacket and go. You'd likely make the trip in 30-40 minutes, takes me a bit more. Have a great trip over.

This is great! Thanks for sharing. I have a 26' Sleekcraft BR I'd like to try this in. My experience is all fresh water, though. Cost per night? Is there usually a mooring ball available? Call ahead and reserve? Any other fun places you can recommend to launch and explore on the west coast? Thanks again!

Hi Brad. Thanks! When you get to the Avalon Harbor entrance, look for the red and grey Avalon Harbor Patrol boat. Once you're close enough to get their attention, just idle in place, they will come to you. They don't like it when you go to them. They will ask you how long you plan to stay, then assign you a buoy. Pay the fee, they'll give you a receipt. The buoy numbers for our size boats are usually #1 thru #25 or thereabouts. Stay to the right of the Green Pleasure Pier, then turn right before you hit the beach/swim area. Your buoy will be on the right (row closest to the beach). Pull up to the flag associated with your assigned buoy, secure your bow line, then lift the line connecting the front and rear anchors, walk to the stern of your boat, and secure the line to your stern cleat, keeping your boat from spinning and hitting your neighbor. I like to drop off my passengers at the pier first, secure the boat, then call on VHF Channel 9, "Avalon Harbor Shoreboat, Pickup on #5." They'll come get you and drop you off at the pier. On a busy day, you will usually be able to catch a ride to the dock from one of the dinghies zipping by. If you don't have a radio, you can ask anyone with one (even the Harbor Patrol) to call for you. Check the weather, go on a smooth day, much more fun. Perfect time of the year to smooth days. Enjoy! I don't ususally stay overnight, so you're on your own, but plenty of places to stay. Not sure which port you launch from, but I like to go up the coast to Rainbow Harbor for lunch.

Cool video, maybe you can give some advice, I'm thinking to trailer my 16' bowrider out to CA and head to Catalina, where do you park a small boat there, I don't want to rent a mooring? Also water looks pretty calm in most videos I see, Ya it's a big ocean with big waves but whens the best time to visit the island in your opinion? I'm a subscriber thanks!

Hi John, Usually the best sea conditions are in the winter when no storms are brewing. In the summertime, there's usually a swell with afternoon wind chop on top of it. You'll just have check the wave conditions before you do the crossing, it is a big ocean, no place to be in a 16' boat when it gets angry. I like crossing during a slight offshore flow (mild Santa Ana Wind condition). Sorry but I don't have any familiarity on where to pull your boat out once you get there. I usually just go for the day and rent a short term mooring. Hope that helps. Have fun and safe travels.

There is a Shore Boat that brings you to the dock for a fee. Since the shore boat fee is per person, I like to drop off everyone before mooring. You can use the big dock in the video to drop off as long as you don't interfere with the commercial site seeing boats. Otherwise, you can drop off at the dinghy dock next to the big dock, if there's room. I've never been told otherwise in the all the years I've been going over there. Call "Avalon Shore Boat" on channel 9. "Avalon Shore Boat, pick up on #8". Good luck!

You would likely make it round trip from Newport without needing fuel, but I would buy some in Avalon just to be sure you have enough. Not a good idea to run out.

The smoothest sea conditions are usually in the winter or late fall. The warmest time is in the summertime, usually with the biggest swell. If you avoid going on a windy day, the swell won't be a problem. It's the wind waves that get you. I don't ever schedule a trip across, just wait for a possible day, check the weather, then decide. Have fun!

@@graciegutierrez6702 Wind is the biggest factor. Be sure to check the afternoon forecast if you're coming back the same day, that's when it can get rough. I use this site to check on the wave predictions but there are many good sources out there may may be more precise: cdip.ucsd.edu/recent/model_images/san_pedro.png Blue is good, green not so much.
