Trimming Pottery 101
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I have a very particular way of trimming pots, developed over almost 15 years of making. In this video, I want to discuss that approach, show my techniques, and talk about subtle tips and tricks that help the process of turning and finish pots at the leather hard stage.

who doesn't watch till the end? outrageous
I am taking potting lessons and have learned more from you than my instructor. Your demos are clear and have helped me so much. Thank you!
I began my potting journey 9 lessons ago! I feel that your videos and clear explanations and demonstrations have helped me enormously. Thank you

So pleased to hear so! Comments like that make the whole process of filming and making these films feel very worthwhile. It takes me out of my normal practice quite considerably but has perhaps allowed me to have a greater influence worldwide? I used to watch pottery videos when I was a student and they helped a tremendous amount, so it's a good feeling making videos for others who might use them in the same way. Thanks for watching and all the best potting!

@@floriangadsby in college, I watched a lot of Hsinchuen Lin and it really influenced how I approach throwing and pottery. I teach now and sometimes I'm hesitant to show your videos to total beginners--it's inevitable someone gets HOOKED on your level of technical throwing & trimming and expectations skyrocket 😅 Truly, your videos are an incredible resource, and a good lesson that it's all about practice and cumulative, hard-earned experience--pots like this just aren't made in the first 8 weeks, and yet, even you started where my beginners are. Thank you.
Just loved it. The hollowing out of foot is the most difficult part, and super fun. It is one of my goals to get better at it. I thought I did a good job until I noticed a dome on the inside of my teacup! You have such amazing attention to detail and a lovely way of speaking. Loved seeing your doggie 4x in this video. He is the cutest.
Watched till the end. I enjoyed all the pup cameos!
Trimming is magic… and your videos reveal that magic, beautifully!
I’m re-beginning my pottery journey (after a 15 year hiatus) and your videos truly inspire me about what is possible with time and practice! Thank you for taking such care in filming and explaining what you’re doing. The quality of these videos is amazing!
Yes, watched the whole thing. Really love the intensity your cute dog shows in the process. Your videos are clear and precise. Thanks.
made to the end; mesmerizing - I'll never reach your level of finesse but I enjoy these videos so much
watched until the end--thank you. So helpful.
Love the random pets.
As I've been helping my old ceramics teacher with his classes, these videos have been a great resource to tell others about. Thank you for making both my journey and the students journeys easier Florian!
Thanks for the video; it made me take pause and consider what I'm doing automatically, out of habit when I'm trimming. I was amazed that you trimmed 11 ounces off of this pot as I have always been very focused on throwing as thinly as possible but never considered trimming inside of the pot. It's always good to reassess what we do and how we're doing it to get fresh ideas; thanks for this.😊

What a wonderful comment! I feel exactly the same when I watch videos by other potters. There's no RIGHT way of making pottery, but seeing how other minds figure out ways of doing things is fascinating - the fact this video did that for you makes all he effort spent creating it completely worth it. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Thanks. Yes, all the way to the end. All good.
Really helpful! Thank you. Yes, I made it to the end. : )
That’s a great step by step. As a potter of 3 years, I’ve been starting to teach some of the new guild members, and this would be a great guide to follow. Thanks!

Thank you! I hope the video helps! And point them towards my beginner's guide if they haven't already seen it - that may help a little more.
Thank you! I have just enough courage to go and trim my first pots! Yes, I made it. to the end! Cheers!
Brilliant!
Not only did I make it to the end, but I rewound to watch several parts twice. Thanks for this lovely tutorial!
Have regularly made it to the end ever since i started watching you a couple years ago, and while i think I’ll never practice pottery even as a hobby i find the process remarkably beautiful, and your narration and clear way of explaining every step has helped to get me hooked on the progression of each pot every time. Thanks a lot for putting out these videos! ❤
Your explanations are a delight!
This is wonderful❤ I actually prefer trimming to throwing, I think it’s the transformation that I love 😊
Great video! And your dog is super cute!
Thanks! 😄
I watched to the end and am planning to rewatch: a fascinating process extremely well explained
Watched to the end 😉 Great video
Make it to the end! Thank you for the video!

So helpful...from beginning to end
Yes to the end!
I made it to the end! I'm not a potter at all but I soak in this stuff, I love learning even if it's not immediately useful. Plus, I could listen to your voice forever!
Your videos help me a lot, always watch until the end, thank you!!!
Hasta el final Flori¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Made it all the way to the end, as always. I love watching your videos. I'm back in art class for the remainder of the semester, and your videos are so helpful. You are a truly gifted teacher, as well as ceramist, and I am so glad you are willing to offer your insights for all of us who are still learning. A real treasure. For me, trimming is a necessary evil, and I guess that is because I am not very good at it. I prefer the throwing stage, and opening my kiln, of course. I get to see all of the hard work come "alive." I'm really looking forward to reading your book next month when it releases here in the US. It will become a valuable reference in my studio. Thank you!
Thank you for your amazing tutorials 😊

Watched to the end. I always do. This is so helpful! Thank you.
I watch tour vidéos ALWAYS to the end. I vegan pottery as an amateur one year ago and tour vidéos are si precious to sée mouvements, processes, advices etc.. i even made a team pot ❤ Thanks you so much for your videos
Just finished after starting this video a few days ago. The results are aspirational. I haven't thrown any pots yet but am looking forward to a first class in a few months. My hope is these videos and your results will keep me motivated through the learning curve, and maybe even hasten the curve just a bit, by watching how potters' hands are positioned and how they move.
Made it to the end and love it. Thanks for teaching!
Great video. Your ability to explain the process is excellent. I always watch to the end. Work is not done until clean up is done
made it again!!!
I made it to the end! Engrossed the entire time.
I always make it to the end. It is a treat to get to see Ciro peeking into the process!
Loved it! Thank you. Made it till the end

So informative and helped me to see why I have had some not so nice trimming results. Thank you for your detailed explanations and reasons why. I learn so much from your videos!
I just had my second pottery class this morning. I feel like your videos have given me a huge leg up. Thank you!
I love your videos
It’s like you knew I was looking for this exact type of video 😆 great timing. Thanks!

I'm so glad you used the happy mistake at 7:58! Such a perfect visualization.
Excellent video. Thank you for making it 🙂 I find it very helpful.
I'm just starting to learn. I have had 2 classes and am already hooked on throwing. Your videos are great! Thanks. And yes, I watched all the way to the end!
Thank you, very helpful to the end!
Now that is an informative video man. In depth and demonstrated for clarity.
Thank you Florian 🌿always to the end !
I could listen to you speak all day. I love your passion and how eloquently you explain the process! Definitely got to subscribe now ☺️
love your work, its a pleasure to listen to you teach and give guidance
I made it till the end of almost every one, love them all! I'm very new at the wheel, have loved hand building and giving this a try...
Mesmerizing to watch! Informative and inspiring. And adorable puppy shots as a bonus!
Made it to the end. I learn so much from your videos, and have really enjoyed your book, too! Thank you!
Just wonderful - thank you. I have had no trimming tuition and watching yiu has an as seed several of my questions…. 🙏🙏🙏
Not only did I make it to the end, I loved it! I’ve been learning so much from you. Thank you! I actually make about 190 cups as wedding favors for our wedding (which was just 2 weeks ago and was a Huge success and everyone loved the ceramics). I feel like making 190+ of the same piece definitely leveled up my skills but I learn something in every one of your videos. Thanks again!
Made it to the end! I just wanted to say I appreciate how well your script lined up with your demonstrations in the video! It really helped keep the process clear. Thanks for an awesome and informative video!

Aha! Thank you! It's funny really... I film a lot of hand flapping and pointing and then edit it and make the audio match those moments - it makes a big difference I think when what's being spoken about is actually being shown. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
To the end. As always. All good too.

I learned so much. I look forward to watching you, there a calm relaxing tone in your voice that makes it so easy to understand. Beautiful shape on your finished piece. Can’t wait till I get your book. Thank you.
21:24 😂 made it to the end Your videos are my favorite. I started pottery 5 months ago and feel your videos have helped me immensely to improve. The way you explain why you do things a certain way hells me understand clay better.
Good Tutorial as always. I also like all the delicate edges you made on this piece.

Cheers Mike!
Wonderful tutorial-and just what I needed at my current stage!
I‘m new in pottery and I love and hate trimming at the same time 😂 I love it because it‘s soo satisfying and in the end it looks so beautiful. I hate it because its so difficult 🙈 Sometimes I feel it‘s more difficult than throwing. I made myself a chuck with your video but I ruined the mugs‘ rims, maybe they were to soft. And always the mugs fly away even if the 3 clay pieces are attached to the bottom 😂 But I will practice until it‘s easy! ❤ Thank you for your videos ❤️❤️❤️
I am new to pottery with so much to learn. It's both exciting and intimidating. Your videos are very helpful and clear. I especially liked your detailed demonstration of the trimming process. Thank you!
I made it to the end of the video, I always really like watching and you are among my favorite creators. I do blacksmithing and have learned most of what I know from another creators on KZread like Black Bear Forge, Joey van der Steeg, and Torbjörn Åhman. The quality and detail of your videos really shows the process well. The way you give such concise information really illustrates what is going on
I have not learned to love trimming. I hope to enjoy it more 😅
Made it to the end, thank you so much for your tutorials, they are great help.
You make the process so graceful. Thanks for the detailed descriptions and steps.
thank you so much florian! this video was super super helpful! I appreciate your detailed way of teaching :)
so so interesting. very very helpful
great tutorial all the way through to the end. Thank you!
Yes, watched until the end. Thanks for the video, very clear explanation.

Thanks so much!
As a new potter, I can say that I am not a fan of trimming at all! I have trimmed through the bottom of two pots, I have created uneven feet, and somehow I have ruined more than a few sidewalls by trimming badly. Your video makes it look so easy and then I remind myself how much more experience you have…and that you likely had difficulties in the beginning too. This video, in particular, is one I will watch again and again to help me learn to improve. I am not giving up - and I know that with practice and helpful tutorials like this, I will become the potter I want to be ❤

You got this! I hate trimming too. It's tedious and arduous getting everything right. It helps to try to be very, very cautious with every step and also getting creative with fixing holes in the base by adding new clay and adding clay to accidental trimmings 👍 I'm considering getting a trimming clamp cuz it's too time consuming
Great tutorial. Very clear and structured. Thank you.
Thank you Florian. I watched till the end and it was, as usual, really helpful and well explained
Loved all the puppy shots :)
Not a potter, however your videos are just simply relaxing to watch. Thank you. :)

So pleased to hear so! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
I have watched this repeatedly (and of course, each time to the end!). You give us such helpful knowledge in such a concise way. There's nothing extraneous here, which really helps one absorb the info necessary for a good trim. Thanks once again.
Aw that is one sweet puppy!
I make it to the end 😉 and, as always, it was a pleasure to watch your video. Thanks for sharing ! 👌
Yes got to the end. Great tutorial.
Of course, i watched to the end! A few times. Great information, with all the whys and wherefores addressed. Trimming is my fave process, too, tho look forward to getting much better at it. Very helpful tutorial. Thanks as always.
Such a good video, thanks so much for all the knowledge and tipps and tricks :) your work is truly amazing
Make it to the end, actually watch the all playlist to the end ^^ My rims have changed quite a bit ;) So relaxing and useful to watch your videos ! Thank you
I would love to see a breakdown of the various trimming tools that you use!
amazing videos man!! After a beginners class I'm spending some solo time at the wheel and diving head first into your videos because your explanations and demos are so helpful! I'm no where near trimming anything but couldn't stop watching your videos. So fantastic, thanks for your effort and generosity putting together and teaching these lessons!
Love your videos. They are so well videoed. The viewer can see every step. I am taking a 6 week pottery beginners class and the instruction is good but not detailed like this. Thank you.
I made it to the end - again. I have been doing ceramics for about 6 months now. Some days I love trimming and others it is a struggle. It was good to come back and rewatch and relearn. Thanks for your great videos.

Thank you so much. Your videos help me learn in new ways that's hard to do at my studio. The experienced potters now look at me weird as I tap center my pots. 😂
I always make it to the end. Love how informative this more in depth look at trimming is. Your boldness with your tools is pretty awe inspiring, though do you find yourself getting frustrated when you inevitably sometimes go to far?
Thank you! Trimming is always a bit hit and miss for me which makes it less enjoyable but now I can’t wait to get to class to try out some of what you’ve demonstrated.
