Just use tangents and algebra to get the general expression h = (distance between the points * tan a * tan b) / (tan a - tan b), where a and b are the angles. To use and learn trig properly, you shouldn't be getting the numerical results until the final calculation. (The law of sines also makes for a bit of a quicker way through the algebra.)

@@freeloaderuser6793Let the distance (40) be d and let the distance from the base to the intermediate point be x. Let the smaller angle (15 degrees) be a and let the larger angle (25 degrees) be b. You can follow the first steps in the video to get x = h / tan b. tan a = h/(d + x). Put the first expression for x into the 2nd equation to get tan a = h / (d + (h / tan b)). Multiply the right side by tan b / tan b to get tan a = h tan b / (d tan b + h). Multiply both sides by (d tan b + h) to get d tan b tan a + h tan a = h tan b. Group the h terms onto the same side, then divide both sides by (tan b - tan a) to get the general expression that I wrote above.
thanks so much man, it really helped me. Even when I did not know the value of the base of the triangle, I only new that the second base was x-250ft. Thanks!!!

I like this longer version because you get more points when showing more work where I'm from thanks
The way you did this was bewildering. It's much easier and efficient to figure out the angles of the left triangle, use the law of Sines to determine the hypotenuse, then finally use sine(15)=height/ hypotenuse as your final equation. I'm guessing that you also get a more accurate answer that way. I got 25.20m as my final answer.

Hello, is there a way to contact you, to ask a question? I have 5 people in different locations take a picture of an item with a phone app. Problem is, the math does not work out even though they all took a pic of the same item. I have an idea it has to do with elevation of each person. now if I know the elevation of each person, how do I add that to my equation? Thanks for your time
Thank you.

well, then you should know what is your distance from building as adjacent side and what is the height of the building... then you can get the angle through tan inverse(-1) of Height of the building/distance of you from building.

@@lilachu7654 if you're still interested, look up sine law. 180 minus 25 degrees and you have all three angles, 15, 155 and 10, and one length, 40m, for the first triangle on the left. Using the sine law you can find the longest length of that triangle which is also the hypotenuse of the entire right angle triangle. With the hypotenuse found, use SOH where Sin15= opposite/hypotenuse, you can find the height of the building which is the opposite of the triangle.

Quick Question Do you know the answer to this? You are standing 60 ft from a building and to view the very top of the building requires you to look up at an angle of 60°. What is the height of the building to the nearest whole number? General hint: this is a trig problem and can be solved using one of the following: Sine, Cosine, or Tangent.

@@ewanhunter2477 On the right hand side of the equation there's one 'h' and on the left hand side of the equation there 0.575 of an 'h'. He then minused 0.575h from both sides. Left side: 0.575h -0.575h = 0 Right side: 1h-0.575h = 0.425h A simpler version of the same equation: $10 + 0.5apple = 1apple ( minus 0.5apple from both sides) $10 = 0.5apple (then divide both sides by 0.5 because any number divided by itself = 1) $20 = 1apple Damn, that's quite an expensive apple. A balloon is held by a string 300m long. If the balloon is 125m above the ground. Find the angle the string makes with the horizontal. Plsss answer🤔🤔🤔🤔😣😣
@wendyqiao3209
3 жыл бұрын
As you're trying to find an angle, you are going to have to use the inverse of one of the trig functions. 300m is the hypotenuse and 125m is the opposite side of the triangle so you need the inverse of the law of sines. Therefore, I think that sin-1(123/300) should get you the answer. The answer should be 24.62 degrees.
Now that math class is over. Forgot how to do all of it already.
Either way imma look away for one sec turn back and see enchanting table on the board
or just ask the engineer who made the building. Regardless this is helpful when you don't have any tools around
