Trigger Happy with the Roland TR-06

In this video resident expert and co-owner of Patchwerks Tom Butcher takes us through various real world setups with the new Roland TR-06. The tour includes a comparison with the original Roland 606, using the TR-06 with another synthesizer, syncing with other drum machines, and using the TR-06 with modular.
The TR-06 is a detailed replica of the classic Roland TR-606-with some major modern upgrades. Our new Roland Boutique version has the distinctive tone and iconic look of the original, with more sound-shaping options, innovative sequencing capabilities, and an array of triggers for driving modular gear.

The 06 can sound like any 606...it can. Take your time with shaping the tones and effects in moderation..slight distortion can REALLY change the sounds. This unit is so badass, it’s mind blowing people don’t realize it

I love the 606 for the triggers! I use the HT/LT to trigger two SQ-1s and then I can play any synth like he's doing with the 101. Or clock my Edge - which I just use as a MIDI controller to play rack synths like a DFAM. Or on Volcas that let you set sync to 4 ppqn (== 1 step) like the Volca Drum you can step them with a trigger. Honestly the only thing I really love about the boutiques is the triggers. The EXT CLK IN on the SH-01A or the JX-08 or whatever is actually a trigger input that steps the sequencer. So like you can turn a JX-08 or JD-08 into a 1-to-64-step polyrhythm machine - and they can run separate Part A and Part B patterns on two different MIDI channels. The 707/727 also have a trigger out on the rimshot (and high agogo). I wish they'd make a little TR-07 with all 11 sliders like a JX-08 but then a little square LCD screen showing the pattern. I guess that's a problem that the OG 707 from 1985 has a better screen than anything Roland currently makes except the SP-404MK2? I mean they couldn't make a boutique TR-07 with that stupid little segmented 1960's-era display. That would be awful.

Great video! Question, when you clock the TR-06 via trigger in, does it output MIDI clock? The Korg SQ-1 does this and I'm curious if the TR-06 does too!

TB-03 had trigger in before TR-06. They, Roland, can never get the metallic hi hats right on ACM. Same as on the horrible hi hats on the TR-08. They just sound like white noise. I love Roland Trigger Ins & Outs. Especially with Arpeggiators. Thanks for a nice vid.

1:45 Trouble is with the accent mode it accents all sounds in that position.. so if you have a kick, hat and cymbal on the first step they all get accented which sucks.. would have been cool to be able to select which instrument is accented. Only way around this, but not tried it yet, is to use velocity setting (not talking about triggers)

People sometimes mock Roland for saying things like "Not all 606's sound the same" but it's absolutely true. I lost mine many years ago, but I remember exactly what it sounded like - and whilst it sounded more-or-less identical to the one shown here, other comparison videos feature TR-606's which sound VERY different. It's difficult to know (with resale etc) whether those people's machines have been modded or have simply aged over time, but one thing's certain in my mind: The new TR-06 sure sounds like "a" 606 - (probably one Roland cherry-picked from a bunch), but out-of-the-box it's not going to sound like EVERY TR-606 that's out there! :-) (thanks for this great video by the way!)

Jeremy Murray-Wakefield - I had a 606 many years ago and loved it. I think sound differences on KZread are more likely to do with recording variations and compression. Not sure about the new Roland version, snare not as nice to my ears. Need to listen to some 606 and RD6 comparisons, see how that fares.

It's unlikely as these difference are huge (more likely to be dirt on the (internal) pots or someone opening the case and tweaking them). I got a TR-06 for Christmas and it sounds exactly like (my) original unit did. However the TR-06 snare sound is adjustable. If someone's original 606 is out-of-whack you can probably still match the TR-06 parameters to match that if needed. I think it's wonderful - you can't perform critical listening comparisons with these videos; the audio is processed automatically by KZread regardless of how carefully the reviewer recorded it (which in most cases isn't actually very carefully at all anyway). As for the RD6, it doesn't sound anything like (my) original TR606 at all. For anyone considering either the RD6 or TR-06 - go to a music store with your own headphones and listen to the actual units (and on the TR-6 try the many different snare sounds possible with the unit) rather than relying on videos. In fairness, this video represents the out-of-the-box TR-06 sound very well (albeit with a lot of microphone background noise). In terms of demonstrating capabilities I also agree this is a great video. Worth mentioning that the TR-06 has not one, but three completely different snare drum models inside, and all three models have three tweakable parameters (tuning, decay, and snare-to-drum balance)

@@jeremymurray-wakefield8011 - you're right, we've all got our own idea of what a 606 should sound like - I used to use the snare and hats on mine a lot (circa 20-25 years ago) so I'm generally listening to those sounds and whether I like them or not. I think if you're more old school the RD6 apeals because it has individual outputs, so if you've got plenty of free mixer inputs the sounds are easily manipulated. But then again the sound tweaking capabilities on the TR-06 is a great feature. Shame there aren't many comparisons with the Cyclone Analogic TT-606. I've got the TT-303 and it's the better 303 clone out there imho. Sequencer options are way ahead of the competition but there's very little information out there showing it off. Having said all that I installed a TR sound pack onto the Digitakt yesterday and the 606 sounds were perfect for what I was after. So I've sold out to samples!

@@leftmono1016 I think there's a trick sample pack makers are missing - they should sample drum machine hits simultaneously from all audio outputs at once, and share the same start edit-point, because (I believe) that time-coincidence between drums is an important part of an analogue drum machine's sound; you have to match original machine's co-incidence of snare and kick when on the same beat for example.

hello, I have 2 questions : 1. what is the (yellow) cable that we have to use for the trigger output ? 2. what is the output cable that we have to use for the main output of the TR06 ?

  • @PatchwerksSeattle

    @PatchwerksSeattle

The trigger cables are 3.5mm patch cables (TS), and the output of the TR-06 is a 3.5mm stereo (TRS) cable like you would use for headphones

@@PatchwerksSeattle Thank you very much, I was about to buy the Behringer clone when I saw this one was on the market. Do you recommend it over the RD-6 ? Aside from the fact that the Behringer is cheaper for the wallet, the TR06 seems to cast a wider range of functionality.

@@oliviergautier1973 It's really up to you, but the extra stuff on the Roland makes it a more versatile instrument for the extra cost. Trigger in is super fun, and we didn't even get into the other sounds, the effects, or the other stuff the TR-06 does in this video

The big fail here, (unless you know a way to do it? ) is that the sh01a won’t do the click in syncopation in live play of the keys, which the original sh101 did do in LFO mode. This is what stops me from doing an all Roland boutique band. It’s a critical feature for live play.

Tr-06, 606 just sounds much nicer imo. But a much better option is the mc-101, has all the Roland drum kits, custom drum kits, plays samples from SD, more FX, compressor, 4 tracks, sequences other gear, proper 6.3mm outputs, smaller, barely costs any more. These boutique things are cool, but too expensive not just compared to the clones, but also Rolands other drum machines and grooveboxes.
