Trigger Finger Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a common condition seen by hand surgeons. Swelling and inflammation in the flexor tendons, which bend your fingers into your palm, can cause your finger to catch or lock when you try and make a fist. Often, trigger finger can be treated successfully without surgery.
CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS
+ Trigger finger is most common in women
+ Certain medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis
+ Overuse, such as repetitive gripping
+ On occasions traumatic injuries may lead to trigger finger
SYMPTOMS
+ Swelling
+ Tender lump in the hand
+ Popping and catching in the finger joints
+ Pain when extending or bending the finger
+ Stiffness in the fingers after prolonged inactivity, like sleeping

I had this once in the past. Tried my home remedy which worked for me and the condition has not returned to date. At night before bed I placed a loose fitting glove on my hand and inserted popsicle sticks in the finger slots so my fingers could not bend. In the morning my fingers felt achy (like they had been trying to bend during the night but couldn’t). Repeated this for 3 or 4 nights. After several years there is no recurrence and the finger seem to be working normally.

I have recurring problems in both hands, my feet are getting worse as well. My feet are numb , sore and my little toes are starting to cross. And I’ve experienced trigger finger while working, while riding my atv and out of the blue like a few minutes ago, which is why on here looking this up. My family doctor said I have slight elevated levels in my blood but I don’t have rheumatoid arthritis and no diabetes. I imagine a hand specialist is probably the next step . They wanted to refer me a while back but I didn’t want to make an hour drive to that doctor. I’m almost 57 and not overweight.

@lovesinfinite1 I appreciate that, but I don't think witchcraft alone can help this. The only clear cut cure is to stop repetitive motion long enough for it to heal. Unfortunately, our economy here in the U.S. is forcing me to have to do this to myself. I thought my white privilege would've kicked in by now. Oh well.

I took a job this winter clearing snow, which obviously consists of a lot of shoveling. Never had hand issues before, and in the past month or so, I’ve been experiencing these exact symptoms. On both hands, my middle and ring fingers specifically, I wake up to them practically locked into place, with the middle finger being most severe on my right hand(my dominant hand). After about an hour or so of being awake, the symptoms decrease significantly, but there’s still a noticeable pain but the locked finger(s) go away. Can definitely feel something going on with the tendons

Hey I was doing gripper exercises with a regular gripper last year, I did it wrong for a while but figured it was just fatigue and that I'd train and make it stronger, but I was using bad form and basically now my middle finger on my right hand points to the right from the root joint or whatchamacallit. I've gone to several so called specialists but no specific information is found on how to straighten it. It doesn't hurt, only if I do something strenuous with that finger and it's been confirmed to not be broken but seems to have been the tendons or something that have been stretched and I want to correct that, any idea how to do so? The finger, the middle finger, is always leaning and touching the ring finger, which it didn't use to and is not supposed to, it should be straightened. Is there something to keep it in place until for it to recover? Such a simple thing that doesn't need surgery, doesn't cause any pain unless it's doing something strenuous and yet no one has any answers for this. Here is a challenge for anyone who might know anything about this.

Overuse of the fingers or repetitive gripping actions can strain the tendons, leading to trigger finger. If the symptoms do not resolve with rest and conservative treatment, surgery may be an option to relieve pain and restore function.

Thanks, I had it happen today, doing tree work, climbing with harness and rope and pulleys and small chainsaw, towards the end I had to stop, my middle finger was locking in, and my thumb on both hands. I went to the pharmacy, and got some muscle decontraction tablets, some cream, and some berocca. My biceps feel over worked, and they were even shaking/twitching. So job almost finished pushed to 7 days. But it was sore had to straighten out my fingers and push my palm against the tree. That's when I decided that the day was finished. I definitely think having enough calcium and magnesium is important, I usually take multi vitamins as I work outdoors. A good hearty meal too is important. Thanks again for the info.

Almost 53-year old female. 30+ years as a hairstylist. Use my hands a lot (obviously). For the past several months my right ring finger has been getting more and more painful and I can bend it a little-but that’s it. Only a little. I can feel it is pretty swollen at the base of the finger in my hand (where they meet). But I don’t remember it ever getting stuck in the closed position. I thought I was getting carpal tunnel syndrome, which is pretty common in hairstylists but my research says otherwise. Now I’m wondering if it’s this trigger finger, even though it was never stuck in that closed “trigger” position.

Does it have to be so bad that the finger is locked or is that not a required symptom? I got a hit on my hand a month ago and everything fits in this description of what it happening but my finger isn't so badly catchign that i cant stretch it. The hit i experienced was on the top of the knuckle too, which is where there is a bump on the side where the tendon is... When i try to bend, the 'triggering' happens where my fingers starts to catch and tremble... Or is this not triggerfinger?! I dont see a specialist until next month due to them having no openings..

it could also be gout or rheumatoid arthritis. you have to have an xray exam, cbc test, uric and creatinine test to know if food is causing this or a medical condition such as diabetes or again arthritis and if all these tests pass and everything seems to be normal, then it's trigger finger. I'm now experiencing it myself because I am a gym rat been working out for 18 years straight. I've been on therapy right now for 2 weeks no working out, riding my motorcycle or playing my games on a controller. what I'm doing is resting my hands, drinking plenty of water, icing it 4x a day, warm water therapy every 48 hrs, wearing a splint and compression glove so I can sleep and not have my fingers painful in the morning and I also take anti inflammatory drugs one in the morning one at night and a muscle relaxant pill before I sleep. I hope this works coz I know how it feels and it sucks. let's help each other, who in here is back to normal and what medications or routines do you do?

Hello, I'm 18 and I have this on my right hand middle finger, the thing is, I've had it for years and just got used to it, It's in the stage where it pops when i extend and put back the finger and it has been like that for a long time, as I've said, it doesnt bother me that much but it affects my grip strenght on the right hand and I'd like to get it removed, the excersises, aspirin/ibuprofen, and icing never helped before. Should I just get the injection?

Hello I have a question, can trigger fingers be permitted if not treated in a certain amount of time? I have trigger fingers for 12 years now and I still want to try violin when I turn 14 without the weird feeling in my fingers. The last time I felt pain from trigger fingers was in 3rd and 4th grade. Currently my fingers can bend normally, but I can still feel the click of my fingers bending. Is it possible if I do at home treatment now?

I've started to experience this in my right middle finger some months ago. I can feel it starting in the left middle finger as well. Related videos suggest this could possibly be thyroid related. I also started waking with both hands tightly clinched in a fist, and the pain is excruciating! I'm 65, and had both thyroid and para thyroid removed in 1998. I have yet to find any two doctors that agreed on much of anything. So far, all of them just ignore these types of symptoms. My endo of 23 years, has always suppressed my thyroid. I changed that two years ago. It's anybody's guess what's going on at this point. I've also been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 2017, if that makes any difference. Maybe I just expect too much from any doctor to know about all these issues or what to do about them. Thanks for posting the video!

Never addressed any of them. I finally decided I had enough and went off all the meds for ten months. What I found was, almost all my symptoms, especially the worst of them, was a direct result of the levoxyl, didn't matter which med it was. SEVERE neck pain (over 30 negative MRI's), constant headaches, cold rear round and on and on.. All caused by the medication. Normal TSH around 3 was now 98. This caused serious issues with both eyes and the only reason I agreed to go back on synthroid. My primary concern has been renal failure, which was a result of going to the ER and a hospital stay, for hbp after getting a staph infection. Just can't win. Thankfully it's near the end of the road.

Me 60 yr old mechanic, have trigger finger both thumbs and mainly pointer finger on left hand. Have gotten multiple injections in these locations over the past few years. Right now, pointer finger is very swollen at first joint and the finger does not stay closed but very hard to bend due to the pain and inflammation. My Hand doc warned me last time that I am in very high chance of ruptured tendon if I get more injections........and if I have the surgery, which is very hard to do, because of having to keep working, then I also need to find another line of work that will lessen the chance of a re-injury after the surgery..........I take 500mg Aleve and topical gel for inflammation.......but feel like I am stuck now because the injections could cause big issues and I have to get another job.....all at the same time, but right now, I am working with my hands and painful and hard to work with left hand.........gonna make appt soon to see if my doc thinks oral steroids will help......I have not seen any comments about this...............this is my story, thought I would share and comment.

Just today I was in tearing pain, i was cooking and while grabbing the thong my fingers locked up. Food got burned because I couldn't turn off the stove or grabbed the food. Had to go across the street to my neighbors for help. Once my fingers lock in I cant move them. If i try my hand will shift inwards and hurts more. The pain is over 10. But the trigger fingers didn't stop by any means. I would often get it on different fingers. Try consulting to a rheumatologist. May God bless you. It took me a lot of time to figure out about rheumatoid arthritis, hope it helps you in doing it sooner if that's the problem.

That's wonderful that the stretching exercises helped straighten your fingers. Trigger finger occurs when the affected finger's tendon sheath becomes irritated and swollen. It may put you at higher risk, but hard to know without an exam from an orthopedic hand surgeon.

Don’t you need that pulley to keep the tendon in place? What happens with the surgery? Do patients get bowstringing of the tendon where it won’t stay next to the hand? What are the statistics of permanent resolution to the affected finger post-surgery?

  • @thecenteroregon

    @thecenteroregon

The pulley is divided (released) so that the flexor tendon can glide freely. Although pulleys have an important function in the hand, releasing the pulley should not cause problems in the future. Bowstringing is a complication, but it is not common.

So basically this can occur due to overuse So you need to give your hand some relaxation; allow it to not be used for a while Give it some massage Use some ice on it Then find out ways to reduce the use of your hand For example if you have to make a lot of pizza, and dough the pizza, then maybe find a better technology to reduce the strain on your hand Try to put some heat or ice on the wrist (the area were people would normally cut themselves) If still not healing, then you may require surgery
