Wow, I tried purposefully over exposing and wow! You aren't kidding!! You are the only person that explains this. Everyone else is like, yea use a soft box or point it wall. It makes sense why this works though.

Wow that was a great tutorial. I've been doing all the settings in the camera as well as the flash just right, but missing the positioning of the flash head part. This was an awesome video, filled with tons of information in just 5 minutes. And then we even got to hear lamps sing! Keep up the great work, I'm subscribing!

My favorite tutorial channel. He makes things so simple, and easy to understand. Doesn't go on about the equipment he uses but rather the simple techniques any photographer can use.

I shoot concert photography and really despise using flash. It all looks the same(or horribly over/under exposed when done wrong) and never captures the light/color/feeling of the actual event. But this gives me hope that I can use it in some situations (better than never) and still capture the ambiance. Thank you. Instant subscriber.

Best instructor who really makes sense and makes me want to shoot more and learn from my own mistakes.

This video is just what I needed. I wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos and enjoy your motivation to teach others. Merry Christmas & blessings!

Good job, most people fire directly at the subject washing out the color with white flares. Composing a great shot isn't that hard, but knowledgeable photo buffs have figured this flash issue out.

After watching your video I played with my settings, iso, shutter and flash settings to try things out that you mentioned. Man did it work great! thank you so much! Thank you so much Andrew! This video really helped me understand flash photography in a practical way. You showed me I was using too low of an ISO, and the camera flash white balance had my photos taken with flash look too blue! Then I lowered Shutter Speed and turned the flash away from a wall really helped my photos to look realistic. I'm excited about learning this and getting closer to be a great photographer. I hope that getting a good understanding about light and photography will help me with videos also. I wish I could be in Myanmar to take a class from you.

Too many photographers think of flash as a way of combatting low light, when its greatest role is as a creative decision. There are times when overwhelming ambient is the perfect choice. At these times flash becomes the dominant light source. Annie Liebovitz made a career based on this. In this role flash is about drama. But there is also the times when flash should have subtlety and should not be a consciously visible part of the light in the scene. In this case the flash is there to balance the light as a supporting actor and no more. This is what this video is about. Subtlety. A word more photographers need to learn. Wonderfully well explained in this video. A great teacher with real insight.

This was great, def investing in some of your elearning classes. One area that is very difficult yet never talked about, is area lighting with flash for documenting (taking the same location over a period of time like days or wks dealing with flash for interior architectural photography). Could be a topic you might explore. Happy new year!

I love your teaching style. Only critique is that your method is basically how to hack TTL. Instead of saying TTL is crap, use Manual to dial in correct power.

Hi Andrew. I noticed you use rear curtain on your example; flash fires just before the shutter closes, in this situation is it preferable to use rear curtain opposed to front curtain?
