Tribute to Majesty

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

From the South Steens HMA, Oregon
Majesty was born in 1998 and was humanely euthanized after a mortal injury, likely sustained in a fight, in 2012.
He was a band stallion, with a sizable band. Many notable horses came from this band, several popular silvers.
We were very fortunate to be able to follow this beautiful stallion for several years before his demise.
Enjoy the majesty of this special stallion.

So young a stallion but magnificent. He was obviously a great leader and protector of his herd. My heart is sad that he had to pass so young. But left his strong and beautiful genes to live on I hope forever! Rip you beautiful boy.

Barbara I am so glad that I got to see Majesty on my one trip to the Steens. By the next year he was gone. A presence missed on the mountain.

I've only just subscribed to your channel, have been an advocate of wild, horses for years. Wow Majesty was the right name for that beauty. I am so very sad to know he is gone though. I was looking at him and imagining if had been tamed and well cared for, groomed, etc how stunning, glossy and glowing he would be. He was definitely something beautiful. What a beautiful band of horses he created. Thank you for your work, your photography is excellent. I loved watching them all just hang out for awhile in the wind. Maybe one day I will be able to visit some wild horses in person. I am glad at least that they are able to work with many of these that have horribly been rounded up and kept. I have seen some of them at the adoption events. Every single person I have spoken with that has ever owned a mustang says they are the best horse they ever had.

beautiful horses, do you know how long a stallion keeps a herd before another takes over? it seems alot of strength is required to hold and protect a herd of mares and foals.

There is no hard and fast answer to that, Rose. It depends on many factors, such as whether there are gathers by the BLM, if a stallion has a lieutenant to help him defend his harem, if there are any injuries and how experienced a stallion is at having a band. Even how smart he plays it. Some stallions are so quick to fight that they exhaust themselves and others who will only fight when they have to. I've personally seen stallions with stable bands for up to 14 years (that I know of, so probably longer) and keep them even through gathers, and stallions who lost their bands after a couple of years.

I have a question for you Barbara why is this stallion freeze branded when he supposed to be wild I thought they didn't mark them unless they came in

  • @barbarawheelerphoto

Branding or not, is left up to individual BLM management. We have been to 68 herds all over the country and the Oregon BLM is the only one who freezebrands every horse who is gathered. They are also the only ones who routinely release horses back to the range. So, in Oregon, it simply means the horse has been gathered, vaccinated and aged at some point AND returned to the HMA. If you see a freezebranded horse in another state, the horse may have been gathered and branded and then the BLM decided to return them to the range (this was according to one BLM wild horse specialist I asked in WY). There may be other explanations but either way, it's unusual to see freezebranded horses anywhere but Oregon, and of course, Majesty was in Oregon. :-)

Thank you Barbara for the awe inspiring beautiful pictures. Nature really does make the best stunning horses!! Question: why was he branded? I thought Free Roaming Horses n Burros on HMAs are not supposed to be branded as according to the 1971 Act ? Is this BLM branding still happening in Utah?

Sondra, there is no mention of branding in the WH&B Act. Branding or not, is left up to individual BLM management. They are also the only ones who routinely release horses back to the range. So, in Oregon, it simply means the horse has been gathered, vaccinated and aged at some point AND returned to the HMA. This occurred in 2012, Kimberley. The band was taken over by Majesty's lieutenant, Jack, who was band stallion for several years. Several of the horses have since died and others are in different bands with other band stallions.

The last time I looked this up it was ~45,000. Small compared to even one state's population of elk or deer and a fraction of the cattle on public lands.

Do you happen to know of any baby photos of Majesty? My friend owns a Steens mustang who she adopted in 1998. He looks so much like Majesty. I often wonder if they may be closely related. We have photos of her boy as a bachelor before gather, so curious to see if there's any young ones of Majesty.

I do not know of any photos of Majesty as a foal or even a bachelor, I'llBeBold. He was born ~1998 and at that time, there were not a lot of photographers going regularly to the Steens. We first saw him in 2007.

  • @barbarawheelerphoto

Not in Oregon, Sondra. Most mustangs who are gathered are branded, whether released or not. It's the only state that I am aware of that does this, but it's also the only state I know that manages horses in this way. In many other places, if they are gathered, that's it. But Oregon selectively releases for color, conformation and genetics.
