I refer to the 4th test India vs Australia 1969-70 series at Calcutta. I was a boy of 13 viewing from CAB Annual members stand. In the first innings Australian Captain Bill Lawry was confidently playing at score 35. He went for a copy book full stretched forward defense to smothered the spin of Bedi's delivery. The ball hit the inside of inclined blade of the bat and harmlessly rolling down to ground. But the ball never found the ground. Eknath Solkar, who was fielding at short leg at hand shaking distance was already went under the bat only to receive the ball with his outstretched right hand. All in a flash. Bill Lawry could not believe it. 70 thousand spectators took few seconds to react. I have seen many great catches in last 55 years. But nothing came near to that. Unfortunately no video or any mention of that in KZread or elsewhere. Without mentioning this any tribute to Eknath Solkar is incomplete.

Yes, solkar was a valuable & a unique criceter, espcially a sharp fielder like a chittah or leapord in the close in fielding.no other can be superior than him. Though my young period was of radio commentry yet I remember his smart catches in several test matches He & Abidali were very useful allrounders of our team.

Best close-in fielder of all time, Solkar was the king of dive catches. Stylish bowler, both spin and medium pace. Great all-rounder and a pleasure to watch. Saw him play in the 70s at Brabourne, Hindu gym, Oval maidan, Islam gym. Jackson, Mississippi.

I had the good fortune of sharing drinks with Solkar at Madkeri Chitra Hotel in 1997. I had gone to the hotel with a friend of mine and saw Solkar having drinks alone. I went over to him and introduced myself to him and he was very glad and I offered him drinks. He came over to our table and shared drinks with us. Though i have not seen him in action physically, but heard his heroics through commentary. We had spin quartet. Well we had quartet in Wadekar ata slips, Venkat at Gully, Solkar in forward shortleg and Abid in backward shortleg. If had played now, probably he would have been the best feilder in the world.

    See, that was golden era, i am unable to understand why cricket expert don't talk this ! We had ( 1965 to 1972 ) team of best close in fielders अजित वाडेकर ( स्लिप ) वेंकट राघवन ( शॉर्ट गली ) एक्की सोलकर ( फॉरवर्ड शॉर्ट लेग ) अबिद अली ( पॉईंट ) नवाब पतौडी ( कव्हर ) our bowlers were deadly because of these fielders.

'Ekkie' Solkar was a childhood school years hero-a God. Used to keep photo clips of his diving catches from newspapers and magazines. And colour photo cards, too! So when a '50 Best Catches by Indians' KZread video doesn't feature any of his many catches I consider it a lack of any sense of history in those who made that compilation. Catching, especially, shortleg catching was defined and re-defined by 'Ekkie'. He is The Gold Standard to measure any Catching prowess by. And none has been able to match it or even come close. The Tribute series is therefore a godsend and an immersive, nostalgic experience for me. Just that it could be made more universally acclaimed and cherished among the non-Marathi folks by (i) providing Sub-titles in English for the Marathi conversations, and (ii) by tagging the names of the cricketers and coaches featured in the video. I could recall the names of Milind Rege, Vasu Paranjpe, Ramnath Parker and a few others since I have grown up in that period but those of the newer generation will miss out on a lot of the rich content that the videos have to offer. I hope these can be incorporated in the Tribute series to help reach a larger audience which our super-hero "Ekkie' surely merits and deserves. 'EKKIE'- The One. The Only One.

Thank you Dwarkanath Sir for making it happen. We started following cricket at the age of 10 with India's famous West Indies tour of 1971. Sunil Gavaskar, Vishwanath, Ajit Wadekar, Eknath Solkar, Prasanna, Bedi, Venkat, Abid, Engineer, Sardesai , Durrani, Ghavri, Amarnath brothers, and even Ashok Mankad, Paddy Shivalkar, Ramnath Parkar and of course many more of that era were cricketers who gave us excellent cricketing moments. Ekki 's story is one of courage and determination to make it big in spite of his humble childhood. Incidentally he was my favorite cricketer of that timeframe. Thank you again to all those who made this program happen.

We did not have tv then but our ears were glued (buried?) into transistor as the Oval match swung like the new ball swings in England. When Knott - who often bailed England out of trouble with some counter punching cameos was dismissed, we were 90% certain India will register a historic series win.

That catch of Alan Knott off Venkataraghavan was extraordinary for people who minutely analysed the entire event. After Venkataraghavan released the ball, as Alan Knott was getting ready to play forward defensive stroke, Solkar anticipated the ball popping up and going towards backward short-leg direction. Solkar moved forward by taking a step forward towards backward short-leg direction with his right leg, thereby narrowing the angle as also distance between him and the point where ball was likely to land. That enabled Solkar to take the catch which, for anyone else, would not have been a catch at all. In Indian Test Cricket history the catches taken by Eknath Solkar will remain special for sheer audacity.

Eknath Solkar and short leg are synonyms in Indian cricket. He showcased fielding in an Indian team that was not known for its fielding. Yes MAK Pataudi was a brilliant Cover fielder before Ekki arrived. Wadekar and Venkat were brilliant close catchers pre-Solkar debut. But Solkar was a sensation - when sensation was not a word in Indian cricket media dictionary. Like someone said in this segment of the video, he was perhaps the only all round fielder India ever had. Watched him debut against New Zealand in Hyd and then so many times he had played in Moin -ud- Dowla tournament in Hyderabad (for SBI or ACC, I dont remember). His 75 in the first Test in WI in 1971 and his support to Dilip Sardesai who scored his maiden ton and double ton in that Test turned a losing game (75/5, iirc, when Solkar joined Sardesai in the first innings) was a turning point for the series. Similarly his catching in the 1971 Summer in England was half the reason for the spinners to have a stranglehold on the bemused English batsmen. Solkar was the 'secret' little weapn that Ajit Wadekar unleashed on Boycott and non-plussed the prolific opener who failed to make any big score in that series. He ground out a typical Bombayite 'khaddoos' century against the West Indies in 1975 at Wankhede - his only Test ton to go with so many invaluable gutsy innings that did not get him big scores but let the batsman at the other end like Sardesai Vishy etc get big scores. Whether he scored just 12 in the infamous summer of 42 Test or much more, he gave his all - as a batsman, bowler and of course as a fielder. Eknath Solkar remains one of my fav Indian cricketers forever. As a fielder, Ekki was Ek hi (The only one)
