taemin is heavily involved in the creative aspect of planning the story and concept of each album and music video. he has a different type of artistry than a songwriter/producer. and the songs he does write are fucking good!!

I don't mind if they don't write BUT I do think that is essential the involvement in the creative process of you own art be it on the choreography, the imagery, the song, the concept, perfomance etc. Even if you don't write i think that is important have your own personality, message and the ability to express yourself. Art is all about expressions in the end. That what makes a Artist be a Artist.

I love taemin a mentally ill amount lol, he’s my fav along with bts and dreamcatcher. I highly recommend his “killing voice” video, it’s like a medley of some of his songs, that he sings live. It’s absolutely gorgeous his voice is something else! I’m dreeeaming of seeing him in concert next time he comes to France. He also filmed 2 MVs in France for my greatest joy :D

This is one of the songs Taemin re-worked to make it fit his overall storyline and the concepts he wanted within the entire "Guilty" album. Therefore the original song probably sounds nothing like this nor would the lyrics be the same. The song again portrays Taemin's long-standing dilemma between is celebrity status the demon) and his Christian worldview (Taemin), represented by two separate egos residing in his mind. In "Guilty" we are given the name of the demon, "Abraxas" (which is a gnostic demigod of a heretical sect later referred to as a demon). This is why Taemin grabs his throat from inside his shirt -- the demon is inside himself, to the point of digging his fingers into his leg to keep him vigilant. The entire song is a conversation between Abraxas & Taemin with Taemin trying not to succumb to the temptations offered to him. The choreo represents the mental struggle he is going through. The concept of guilt demonstrates the how one feels when involved in a toxic relationship (like the one he is in) and possible choosing what you know is wrong over your personal convictions. "Want" is a very thorough retelling of the Bible's Genesis 3 story from the actual ancient context of the Bible where certain words and images are only recognized through the Christian worldview as the ancient Israelites understood them. (ex. seas = chaos; the serpent (Taemin in the bright, white shirt) represents a "divine, shining being" = throne guardian in ancient iconography, and so much more. "Criminal" is Act 1 and "IDEA" is Act 2 of Taemin's 2-part album, "Never Gonna Dance Again" (Acts 1 & 2) which continues his two egos' storyline. This album was co-directed & co-produced by Taemin. He worked with lyricists to produce the two title songs ensuring they portrayed an accurate picture of the concepts he wanted to convey. "Criminal" uses the concept of Stockholm syndrome where Taemin is both the "criminal" and victim within his own mind and "IDEA" employs the concept of Plato's Theory of Forms which states that any created being (form) cannot create itself. Only an outside power/being can be the creator and only that creator (Messiah) can make or be perfection. The "IDEA" MV gives us a front seat view of the epic battle between the two egos represented by hell ("criminal") and heaven ("victim") while also searching for the the one, perfect version of himself. With such philosophical and personal concepts, you must realize that while Taemin doesn't write ALL of the lyrics to his songs, he MUST tweak them and the music score (which he has also done) to fit into his vision and concepts. The average lyricists is not going to write songs with such specificity and depth. They would not be marketable to the wider artists and audience. Thanks for the deep dive.

Do you have a social media where you speak more of your thoughts? You are the first person to explain Guiltys meaning in an actually accurate way by going by the source material and not just regurgitate the same tired talking points everyone else does. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on Taemins work! If u don’t want to share that’s fine and if u don’t have something where you write your thoughts out, you totally should! I for one would read it.😊

after bts, exo and shinee were the other groups that absolutely AMAZED me and literally couldn’t not be out done. once I found out that taemin was a solo act along with the group ( & the other members of shinee), it was OVER. his music, his voice, his moves and concepts along with that and just his ability to captivate and execute such a beautiful human expression is really something once in a lifetime. i admire taemin SO SO very much as just a creative and a hard working preserving person; GIVE TAEMIN HIS FLOWERS FOR REAL NO LIE

  • @shadow_sigyn

I enjoyed your reaction! Many of Taemins title tracks are actually very deep and not really about romantic relationships, but I think that the true meaning of them might be quite difficult to discover by a casual listener. I'm not sure if diving deeper would interest you, so I'll just give few short examples: Want has strong biblical references and Taemin is basically a devil in it, Criminal is based on Stockholm syndrome and it's about Taemin's internal struggle, Idea is inspired by Plato's Theory of Forms and depicts Taemin finding his ideal self, Guilty is a difficult and personal piece that I'm afraid to describe in fear that I'll do it wrong, hopefully someone else will comment on that, but it's also more of an internal dialogue and his struggles as an artist and person who debuted at a very young age. Anyway, Taemin also said more than once that he enjoys when people freely interpret his songs 😊 and I think that seeing them as pieces on relationships is also correct. He makes these songs in a way that they have multiple meanings.

Taemin is a special one. I highly suggest watching him perform live. No one does it like him. If you want to see him and Jimin together, the joint performance they did that they talked about was called Showdown and is on here. They also did two dance challenges - Hard and Guilty - and there is just something extra when they do those together. Not saying others don't do it well, they just match each other stylistically and have that extra undefinable thing.

Thank you for a great reaction. Taemin is a true artist and legend in the industry. 🩵 Taemin is so involved in his concepts and for Guilty he worked with the director he’s been working with for a few years now. As you mentioned he does also write including beautiful ballads. He’s also choreographed some songs too. Guilty was inspired by “Demian” by Hermann Hesse. The quote “The bird fights it’s way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world” sums up Taemin. People try to box him in but he’s ever evolving and pushing the boundaries. Another book that inspired Guilty was Eroticism by Georges Batille - it’s about taboo, sacrifice, transgression and sensuality. So much lore behind Guilty it’d take forever to explain but you’ll understand more as you get to know him more. I’d suggested watching his “The Stage” interview. If you’re interested in albums his “Never Gonna Dance Again” series is probably his best work in exploring these themes as well as his identity. There is “Never Gonna Dance Again Act 1” & “Never Gonna Dance Again Act 2”. You’ve reacted to both Idea and Criminal off these albums already. 🖤

✍️Taemin himself writes the text (Heven, Holly Whatever, I'm Crying, Think of you, Day and night, Pansy), the song together with the author Criminal, Under My Skin and many others) but he can correct the text until it is unrecognizable. Entirely choreography by Taemin Want, Artistic Groove, Day and night (music is also his, text, and choreography), Temin is able to come up with a dance in a free style and always makes his own changes to the texts, music and choreography. But Taemin is a perfectionist and therefore does everything to our limits human strength

Yes many choreographers have said he makes the choreo his own and just by watching the og or dance practice compared to newer live stages he does change many choreos and does it more than once, he's a perfectionist and can change 1 choreo several times like Day and Night(which is is why i think he doesnt do choreo fully because when he does like Day and Night he has to change it because he isnt satisfied with it, it can be for other reason ofc but thats my thoughts on it)

I also love meaning, lyricism and self produced-composed-written artists like Yoongi, Namjoon or Hobi but I can't avoid being so entranced by other good performers like Taemin, TXT, DPR IAN, Jackson Wang, etc. (which why my bias are jimin and jk) Anyway, love the vid as always, bye❤

Taemin does write some of his own lyrics! All members of SHINee have written songs, with Johnghyun also composing and producing. SHINee are also all soloists with multiple albums and singles in Korean and Japanese. Key includes songs that he's written in English as he's fluent. Taemin's coming for everyone; you, your wife, your husband, your mom, your kids, your grandparents, your friends, your enemies, your pets, your plants, the very Earth itself. (Not gonna lie SAD KIDS almost made me cry) The only songs I've heard of his that are not b-sides are "Pinnochio" because BeWHY (a k-hiphop artist) featured on it and "Sayonara Hitori" because it sounds like an anime opening song. Those are some of his best songs in my opinion!

Most of his title tracks explore his relationship with fame and identity. The lyrics sound generally more commercial but the meaning has layers. "Criminal," for example, talks about being complicit in his own victimization; "Want" talks about self-objectification. "Guilty," explores breaking taboos, it conveys ambivalence toward being sexualized and how finally he was able to take control of his body and sexuality. The whole concept brings up images of exhibitionism and voyeurism (peepholes, images suggestive of him being naked in the materials included in the album) and objectification related to being a performer. Sometimes you can feel a BDSM sub-tone. His concepts are generally dark, introspective, and kinky. Tons of discussions in reddit about the meaning of the videos.

If you want to listen to songs that touch on more personal topics you’ll need to get into his bsides! Especially try out the songs he wrote himself like 2 Kids and Under My Skin or songs that his bandmate Jonghyun wrote for him based on their conversations together like Pretty Boy and Already. Those will give you a better idea of his inner struggle like dealing with people’s perception of him in Pretty Boy and the darkness he went through after Jonghyun’s death with Under My Skin (there’s a live version with English lyrics). There are so many other amazing bsides too like Identity, Rise, Soldier, Heaven and many more. Taemin’s label unfortunately has been holding him back for years but if you dig past his title tracks there are so so so many gems in his discography! I hope you’ll give them a try.

About his struggles? U can react to “Our page” (but AFFTER PLEASE some 5-6 mv’s or other videos with SHINee - he’s maknae in this). One of their member is gone cuz suicide (Jonghyun). It was one of their tribute to him. For Jjong and for shawols (fans). It’s so hard even now. All five from SHINee r incredibly talented. And Jjong was a Musician, just ginious. They truly were, they r and will be forever The five Princes of k-pop. Other his struggles u can see in his dance and b-side music. One of a Kind Legends

if your gonna do an album reaction PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to never gonna dance again act 2 (the album IDEA is on) its such an underrated album! Personally heaven and identity are my favorite songs on it. I think you’ll really like identity its a beautiful album and shows his range as an artist. If you dont fully listen to the album, at least those songs. Also my favorite taemin song is solider off of his press it album insanely beautiful song, makes me wanna cry everytime i hear it tbh.

I dont think you'll get much of his personal struggles in his title tracks he follows a theme in his songs and it's always religious imagery (he said want was insipired by the bible lol) he's catholic and love inserting religious imagery (like his T pose that is both for Taemin and inspired by the crucifixion) and catholic guilt in his concepts

Hey Jonathan thanks for this. I’m 43, I’ve been going to gigs since I was 15 (rage against the machine was my first!) and I got into BTS a couple years ago. They’re rock star level in terms of performance and songwriting. I’ve tried checking out other Kpop but it’s generally very young people being taught how to sing dance and “rap” to appeal to pop music lovers so if you like authentic lyrics, you generally won’t get it within Kpop, which is why BTS often isn’t classed as Kpop. However a lot of the Suchwita guests are songwriters in their own time, or great performers who make a song come alive, so it’s been fun to discover the diamonds via the show. I’d add Rosé from Blackpink knowing she was into music for music’s sake as a kid and wrote songs and played guitar too, and often the Hybe/Big Hit trainees are encouraged to songwrite so even New Jeans have writing credits on some of their songs. I believe you can see this authenticity in their music. I’m not much of a pop fan in general so I completely understand you when you say lyrics and songwriting are important, I agree. But you’ll notice a lot of Kpop or even just pop fans don’t understand that. It’s the image and simplicity they fall for; which is fine, but ultimately those songs aren’t the ones you want played at your wedding or funeral. They’re not real and can’t evoke emotions. I’d want to be a singer who could draw out emotions. Stick to your guns real ones know! 💜

I was waiting for you to mention Taemin or SHINee. Armys know how close the two groups'members are, right?. SHINee members have many songwriting credits as well, with Jonghyun being the first to produce his own album. Taemin also has creative input for his projects followed by Key and Onew. For example, some of my SHINee faves: Odd Eye, Evil, Prism, Identity, Lucifer, Sherlock, Don't Call Me, Atlantis, HARD, Juice performance video. More Taemin faves: Mars, Heaven, Stone Heart, Under My Skin, Night Away, Just Me and You, to name a few. Enjoy your journey with your ult group, and when you have time, maybe check out some Taemin and SHINee. See Suga's Suchwita ep. 20 with Taemin and Jimin 💜

If bts is rock star level then why did Jimin after 10 years in the industry got heavily criticized for his singing. This is typical bts fans mentally that thinks that bts is the best and are above K-pop. Well news flash, they aren’t. As someone who has liked K-pop for a very long time. I can confidently say and others too , that vocally bts are probably the worst from their generation of boy groups. This thing about bts writes and other K-pop group doesn’t is ignorant and false. Also in bts it’s mainly only RM and Suga that write most of the songs, as they should bc they are rappers. You need to get of your high horse and stop with this childish mentality. Your 43 years old. Just enjoy the music, instead of writing essays how bts is above and better than other K-pop groups like some teenager

@@samia399 ooh hit a nerve did I? Who criticised Jimin’s singing? Fools who didn’t understand that autotune is used as an aural tone in many songs both BTS and others. He’s sung live beautifully so y’all haters know he can SANG you just fall into ridiculous fan wars. Grow up. Bless you I hope you have a peaceful afternoon and newsflash, I can write as much as I want to a KZread channel, you just look salty about it 😘

@@aylablue669girl I know you delusional but doesn’t mean you need to be blind or deaf. His encore stage went viral with a lot of negative responses that Hybe made the music shows delete the video and Jimin himself spoke about how he will take singing seriously after 10 Years and get vocal training. Just embarrassing. And you right, you can write what you want but at your big age lmao

Taemin is my favoriteee but I also reccomend u react to Tvxq love in the ice live, tonight, bolero live, & rising sun, they are the ogs of kpop and opened the doors to the Japan industry for the kpop industry along with boa, they are lesser known to new kpop stans due to 3 of the members filing a lawsuit towards their company and being blacklisted but back in the 2000s I would say they rivaled bts especially since then there was no media to play in their huge success then😉 I just got into them they flew to being my fav artist their vocals are insane
