Trevor Berbick vs John Tate 20.6.1980 (Rd 9 KO)

Спорт

Trevor Berbick (14-1-1) steps up to challenge the recently dethroned WBA World Heavyweight Champion, John Tate (20-1). Tate was coming off his first and only loss to date just 3 months earlier when he was knocked out in the final round against Mike Weaver. The fight was a big moment for both men, Tate was trying to keep his position near the top of the division while Berbick was trying to break into it!...

John Tate's tragicomic climax is surely his running away from the fight as Berbick Pummeled the back of his head.

That was close to being a DQ with the shots to the back of the head.

The truth is that Berbick should have been disqualified for repeatedly hitting Tate on the back of the head.

By that logic, Tate should have been DQ’d for turning his back and running. The truth is you don’t understand the rules of boxing that well.

@@oldschoolboxing6048 You're the one who doesn't know the rules of boxing. If you hit an opponent with an illegal blow and it injures him, it's grounds for DQ. Running from someone isn't.

It certainly wasnt legal BUT Tate was running away from him, Berbick had no other option. Your not allowed to punch the back of the head but your also not allowed to turn your back in boxing either. I don't think the punches that landed on the back of his head made any difference to the outcome, he was already well out of it. Wasnt like he was doing fine UNTIL he got hit in the back of the head, he was done the second the bell rung to start the round!

Because then you'd have abunch of people turning their backs and running hoping to get a DQ win. It'll change the whole game.

Berbick was always classy, wasn't he? Glad Iron Mike made him pay for it with his health. You don't tug on Superman's cape; You don't spit into the wind; You don't wear Tyson's black trunks when facing Mike Tyson.

He wasn't running away, he was stumbling forward because he was off balance and exhausted. Is hitting in the back of the head legal? No. Do you get DQ'd for intentionally hitting in the back of the head? Yes. This shoulda been a DQ.

0:24 he clearly took off running from his opponent. Not only did he turn and run here he had a history of doing it. He did it against teofilo stevenson in the olympics.
