TREMEC TKO/TKX Install, Part 3: How to install Offset Dowel Pins for Proper Bellhousing Alignment.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Subscribe to watch Mike finish this TREMEC installation into his 1969 Pontiac GTO Restomod, in his home garage! If he can do this at home, so can you! "TREMEC Install, Part 3: How to install Offset Dowel Pins for Proper Bellhousing Alignment.", can be applied to all TREMEC installs. The alignment between the bellhousing bore and the crank shaft needs to be within 0.005"! Mike will install special bellhousing alignment pins, and measure the bell housing alignment. This particular Tremec TKO 600 was sourced from Silver Sport Transmissions who provide "PerfectFit" kits for ALL makes and models of classic muscle cars, and trucks too! Link below.

    I purchased the tkx almost 3 months ago and still haven't got installed but im slowly working on it. Im to this point indexing the bellhousing and your videos have helped a lot. I think of myself as being mechanically inclined lol but this is definitely a new experience for me. Unfortunately, I didn't purchase the complete kit so I'm buying every piece separately but I'm getting there lol

    They make a magnetic indicator holder that sticks to the crankshaft so the "snake" holder isn't necessary and so unwieldy, just so anyone watching this knows there's a better way. Great video and tips, thanks.

    @@FastMonty Yeah, I may have commented before I got that far but they're great. I'm glad to see SST sells the stuff you need to install their products and does the driveline work, if you don't have a competent specialty shop near by (Atl. has Doraville driveline, they'd been in business forever and cater to racers), that says a lot about the quality of their products and relationships with their customers. I've been thinking about doing a conversion on my '74 Road Runner. 😀

    Question. When you offset your bell housing in relation to your engine block I would think the mounting screws for the bell housing would be off and the bolts wouldn’t thread in? No? Having trouble thinking through this one. Thanks

  • @FastMonty

    @FastMonty

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question. The clearance between the through hole, and the actual bolt OD, exceeds the amount you'll be shifting the bell. That said, I had to use a Socket Head cap screw on the lower left hole because the standard flanged bolt hit the bell. (The flange, not the actual hole) Does that help?

    Hello Mike. I'm actually converting my th350 to a tkx tremec. But i don't understand how you calculate bellhousing alignment. Do you subtract the 2 values and divide by 2 or do you add the 2 value and divide by 2 ? Or maybe I'm totally out of understanding 🤔

  • @FastMonty

    @FastMonty

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question... not sure what two values you're referring to? When you find your Total Indicated Runout, you divide that number by 2, and that gets your target number to shift the Bell, which will also determine which offset pins to order. Does that help?

    I had a Super T 10 in my 65 GTO. Brand New Clutch / Pressure plate. Never seen the Street. My Question is will the Clutch disc, Pressure plate and input bearing in the Crankshaft be the same as what I need for the TKX or do I need to buy a Different Clutch Kit.

  • @FastMonty

    @FastMonty

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question, Jeff... I don't know what a T 10 is? So, it will depend on how many splines are on the input shaft. The TKX has 26, where my old Muncie had 10 or 12? Back when I put my TKO in, I used the same bearing, flywheel, and pressure plate as with my Muncie, but had to change out the Clutch disc for a 26 spline. Hope that helps, and let us know what you end up doing. Thanks for the comment!

    I have heard people say in the past that they don't like a pilot bearing, that they get contaminated and self destruct, and that they much prefer a bronze bushing, I'm wondering if not doing this procedure is really what led to the bearing failures they speak of?

  • @FastMonty

    The bellhousing being precisely aligned is obviously a good thing. But I've never heard of anyone checking the alignment of the transmission itself. I guess we just presume that the housing casting is perfect but not the bellhousing or block lol.

  • @FastMonty

    @FastMonty

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good point Paul... reason is, the transmission is manufactured to a tighter tolerance than the runout tolerance of the 50 year old bell/block. Hence the need to better align the older technology. :) So, yes, the brand new transmission casting is naturally going to be "more perfect" than the stuff made 50 years ago. (And the old Muncie's didn't care about excessive runout.) Thanks for the comment!
