Trek Remedy Review - 2019 Bible of Bike Tests

Спорт

As the Slash’s smaller sibling, the Remedy has an exuberant, almost giddy trail demeanor, and that’s how Trek likes it-which is why it didn’t get extra long, crazy slack, or a reduced offset fork. Those things would’ve taken the big-BMX spirit out of the rambunctious Remedy.

    Nice to hear someone finally admit that longer and longer isn't automatically better and does in fact come with some downsides. I was beginning to wonder why no one else ever realized or experienced this. It's probably great if your type of riding "requires" an SB150, but not everyone rides like that and the re is a price to pay for having that geometry.

    I've been riding my Remedy for about 3 weeks now and I can totally agree...longer and longer is not always better. This bike is more agile, and more responsive to body English than a longer and slacker bike and allows you to control the bike while centered over it or even slightly behind center much better than the super long bikes that require you to get forward of center or almost over the bars to maximize their handling. The pleasantly baffling thing about it though is that my 19.5 inch frame actually has a reach that is almost a quarter inch longer than my size L Nomad 3. The Nomad has a 65 degree HT and the Remedy in Low position has a 65.5 degree HT...amazing to think that a half degree makes such a change in handling even with the longer reach.

    150mm dropper in this bike is a proper spec. You are all at the top end of what they recommend the large for so you could fit a larger post but myself at 5'11" and shortish legs barely fit with the 150 dropper. most customers buying a 9.8 level trek mtb would be best served on a project one custom build.

    I'm 6'2" & picked up a 19.5 '18 Remedy. Felt tight at first coming from an XL Fuel ex, but got used to it. I do think an XL would have been better, but sometimes I appreciate the smaller frame in tight corners, or even jumping. I ran some Renthal bars with less backsweep & more rise & Chromag saddle with longer rails & it helped. I mainly ride rocky, root packed singletrack with mix of climbs & downhill/occasional trips to Arkansas

    Finally a bible segment of a bike that I actually own. Woohoo! I agree with everything they said about this bike; it's wonderfully playful, predictable, and just fun to ride. I'm really happy I went with it. The only thing I could complain about on this bike is the stock seat...I'm not getting along with the shape of it and just find it uncomfortable. I'm a shorter dude so the stock dropper length was good for me and any longer I wouldn't be able to get the seat height correct.

NB, the 36 is a great fork, but I'm finding that it struggles to keep up with the Float X2 on this bike... hence the trying a Zeb Ultimate 💪 I'm 6" tall and find the XL fits great, apart from the seat tube height... I have trimmed approx 10mm off to allow enough clearance when getting my taint over the back. The 180mm dropper is a perfect fit for my 32" inseam. PS - I do think the Trek range needs a dedicated mullet steed. The Remedy would/should be the whip to get that treatment imho. Wub my Remedy 😍

    I had a remedy last year, I'm 5'8" and rode a medium, and it was tiny on me. But with a 150mm dropper, I had to slam the seatpost to fit on it. Trek's geometry is behind the times, you'll likely not feel as comfortable on a remedy as you would on a bike from pretty much any other company embracing the longer reach trend. Also, the remedy has a low stack height, which doesn't help.

  • @kuraitabinin

    @kuraitabinin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Cakeborb the Remedy geometry is definitely a little "old school" in the sense that they didn't go "long and slack" like the current crop of bikes. I had every intention of buying an 18.5" frame...until I demo'd. The shop only had a 17.5 and a 19.5 in stock to demo out. I immediately chose the 19.5 but juuuust for grins I spun the 17.5 around the parking lot. That was a big fat NOPE...felt like a clown car looks if you get my drift...LOL. The 19.5 inch though felt perfect...but get this. My Large frame Nomad V3 actually had a SHORTER reach than the 19.5 in Trek...only by about 1/4 inch but it was noticeable. Even with that being said though, the Trek FELT shorter than my Nomad even though it actually wasn't...but I was not remotely uncomfortable...it was just "different." I had the Trek in the low position too. My takeaway is that Trek didn't necessarily get their sizing "wrong"...they went about it "differently." I honestly think they nailed it...unless of course you're specifically looking for a long, slack enduro rig. I'm not, because I already have one of those. I'm looking for a nimble, playful downhiller that can actually get me to the top efficiently and without taking all the gas out of the tank on the way up...and I'm feeling like the Remedy is that bike. I tend to agree with the comment in the review of "...not everyone rides like that all the time" in regards to the long and slack geometries and that you have to constantly be on your A game when riding those bikes.

    @Jeremy R I am looking at the Remedy 9.8, i really like the way the 27.5" wheel feels but i have noticed that it lacks just a bit of roll over and speed the 29 provides. I am 5'6" and am hung up. I'm not going to be going ridiculous fast so the speed part doesn't bother me. I am very fit but something about how the remedy climbs and descended speaks to me. I could go over anything and felt confident. I didn't have any hiccups on 8-10 inch roots and rocks which is impressive. The 29r would have been just a tad easier but I like the style of the remedy a little more. I think its the travel how it just conforms to the trail.

    Thanks for this review. It helps a lot. I'm currently riding a Nomad V3 which is a great bike, but am having to admit that I'd like something with a little better climbing legs that can still rip downhill. I'm definitely a more "down" oriented rider but I'm far from pro and the Nomad is capable of soooooo much more than what I throw at it. I was looking at the new Bronson and the Remedy and from what I've gathered it appears that the Bronson is a point and shoot and hang on to your hat bruiser type of ride that climbs well "for the type of bike that it is" and the Remedy seems to be the bike for someone who actually doesn't mind picking the fastest line as opposed to power rolling everything...AND every review I've seen has used strong positive words to describe it's climbing abilities. My Nomad also climbs well "for the type of bike that it is" but I'm finding that what that really means is it will get you to the top of the next Enduro stage effectively, but it's not the bike you want to use to do a long sustained 1-2+ hour climb on. Don't get me wrong...I absolutely LOVE my Santa Cruz, but I think I'm going to make it my dedicated shuttle/park bike and get on a Remedy so I can have a bike that will climb more effectively when I decide to earn my turns and still be ready to party on the way back down.

    @@raupenimmersatt6906 I tend to agree with you...except for the fact that I do like the 150mm travel range though. Before going to my Nomad(s) my previous experience with FS bikes were all in the 5"/130mm travel range. I like the 150mm range though because it's still trail bike friendly but it's a long legged trail bike. I went and demo-d a Remedy 8 shortly after watching this video and took it to my local ride and it is a GREAT climbing bike in comparison to my NomadV3. Not because the Nomad is a poor climber...technically, it's pretty decent at going up...but that's just it...it's decent..."for the kind of bike that it is" decent. The Remedy on the other hand is definitely a "trail bike" in the sense that it was clearly designed with the intent of being able to climb pretty efficiently as long as you need or want to in order to earn your turns and the 150mm of travel means you don't have to avoid certain downhills because they're too rowdy. The shop where I rented the bike from has a guy on their staff who's riding the Remedy 9.9 who regularly hits up to 30' gaps on his and has had no issues and loves the bike...so it clearly doesn't suffer when the trail points down. For me, all that screams "PICK ME, PICK ME!!!" LOL

    IMHO, the SantaCruz build specs are completely F-ed up this year. They are WAY more expensive than almost everything else out there and you still can't get good components. $7000 and you still don't even get Fox Factory Susp. For $5500, you get top of the line Lyric and carbon wheels etc on the Remedy. For some reason SC is smoking crack this year. Way too much $$ for too little. My two cents, your mileage may vary...

  • @kuraitabinin

    @kuraitabinin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Windband1 I agree. When I saw that carbon wheels were in the 5500 price point I was like "WHAAAAAAAAAT?!" Additionally, I'm not opposed to an Aluminum chainstay with the remainder of the frame being carbon...that's a high impact/high abrasion area and the Al I think will handle that contact better if it happens. I've been a Santa Cruz fanboy for a long time but I can't help but scratch my head just a bit at what they did to the Bronson...they basically blurred the line between it and the Nomad. Same suspension design...same frame appearance...a few mm less travel and a slightly tweaked head angle...er...adjustable head angle...it's basically a muted Nomad...and I already have one of those...previous generation, but a Nomad nonetheless. I think the Trek is going to quickly become my favorite whip in my stable except for dedicated bike park/lift access days...in which case, I'll dust off the ol' Nomad.

  • @Windband1

    @@kuraitabinin I have no problem with Alloy chainstays either. That's no biggie at all. I think 150/160 is plenty suspension for just about anything. I'm not pro level and only get to a bike park once or twice a year. For my local trails I'm on Blues and some Blacks, and mostly just Blues at the bike park. My current bike is 160/160, so 150 in the back isn't a big sacrifice. I think this new Remedy looks super sweet! If you get one, respond to this thread and let us know how it is!

    As an owner of a Remedy and a Slash, I would reccomend upgrading to the Slash right off the bat. The Remedy is a HUGE confidence booster. You will be going faster and sending drops like never before. That being said, you will outride the bike very quickly and wish for more. Enter Slash. The Slash is an amazing bike and easily 5 times as aggresive and mean as the Remedy. Unless you are a pro rider competing in UCI downhills and enduros you absolutely cannot outride this bike. Once you dial in the suspension, the bike is an absolutely devastating force on the trails and even the parks. Dont get me wrong, the Remedy is amazing and I have done several enduros on it, but why would you by a "lesser" biker and have to upgrade to the big boy bike when you could go right to it? Simple economics and my 0.02$.

I got the Bronson bc to me it does both things really well- smashes over anything when I’m in the mood for that but still just likes hanging out and being an idiot and popping off everything on the way down when I’m in the mood for that. Hell, I even ride street with it when I can’t get to the trails and have a great time.

    I don't get why 5500 bucks is a good price when you get the same bike with a bit heavier parts for less than half of the price. The "cheap" remedy has a decent kit with the yari fork. I bet you get almost the same performance with the cheaper model, at least on the downhill sections.

    Not to sound like too much of a dinosaur here, but l have two fuels from years 2008 and 2009, it really sounds like they just made a more modern version of a fuel.... which is still in their line up, so like, I really want to know what I'm getting here. Because literally everything described sounds like what I have now on a much newer model.

    Uh...no. Definitely not the same bike as those Fuels. Looking at the specs, that's really quite obvious. I'm not trying to sound snarky, I'm just surprised anyone would think that a bike from 10 years ago is the same. There's so much that is different that it's kind of silly to list all of it. If anything, the Fuel EX has often taken on a lot of the features/geometry of a previous model year Remedy.

    @@nathanle4429 , it's going to depend on what kind of riding you enjoy and what you want to get out of the bike. I've ridden both the 2019 Slash 9.9 and the 2019 Remedy 9.8. I loved them both, and they both have a different feel. Because most of the trails that I typically ride aren't all that gnarly, have a pretty good amount of climbing, and don't have hard core downhill sections, in the past I would not have normally even considered wanting anything other than a Fuel (I am, admittedly, a Trek fan-boy). However, with the Eagle drivetrain, both the Slash and the Remedy really surprised me with how easily they climb. The newer suspension technology also has a lot to do with that. Then when I do get to have some fun on some downhill sections, I felt much more comfortable just opening it up and letting it fly than I did on my previous Fuel EX (2016 model). The Slash is a beast of a bike. I thought of it like being in a monster truck and just barreling over and through stuff. There were downhill sections in Sedona that had me nervous and I had to just trust the bike and hang on...and it handled everything with no problem. The Slash felt BIG. I'm pretty short though (5'7"), so the slightly smaller/tighter cockpit of the Remedy just feels more comfortable for me. It's a little more nimble/agile than the Slash, but I do have to pick lines just a little more carefully. And even though the wheel size is smaller, I did feel like the Remedy climbed just a little better. This could be due to geometry, it could be due to my smaller size and the bike just fitting me better. For the money, I think the 2019 Remedy is stocked pretty well. I'm just a recreational rider so I'm not one to get hung up on details that I am not likely to know the difference from one to the next. I just know when I ride if it feels right or not. I like the bike to be kind of zippy and fun and the Remedy fit the bill for me. If you're a taller/bigger rider and your focus is to bomb thru downhill sections in record time, the Slash may be more appropriate. On the other hand, if your riding does not involve bigger drops and jumps, then the Fuel may be perfect. Good luck, hope you find something that works for you and makes you smile! Check out the video "How To Buy a Mountain Bike" here on KZread if you haven't already...it's an entertaining/funny video about how a lot of us get when we start wanting more...I am absolutely guilty of this behavior! :)

    @@mattb4886 when I rode the Remedy 8 I was pretty surprised by how poppy/springy the rear shock is when you unweight it intentionally. I hit a small roller on a sidehill singletrack section that lands just short of a rock garden and damn near overcooked the jump and went into the rock garden a lot hotter than I usually do. I was even more pleasantly surprised at how well it handled the rock garden as well considering I was riding reactively vs proactively at that point. Bike Mag is a more relatable type of test to the majority of ‘intermediate’ riders, where as PB is the more relatable test for aggressive/ ‘advanced’ riders? PB talked a lot about exo tyres not being enough etc. which would convey that. Just my thoughts, but I think both serve their purpose.

Also, BM has women reviewers - huge, and great for growing that segment! One thing Pinkbike does really well though is state the proclivities of each of the riders, and the types of trails they ride. BM does that, but you have to listen carefully.
