Enjoy your channel. I watched this video more than a year ago and finally I have pulled the triger to get one for myself! I recently bought a Brompton but it cannot satisfy my needs to travel off road. Cant wait to birng this to the trail. Cheers
Loved the video and thanks for the packing/equipment tips! Thanks to one of your previous videos I invested in some Showers Pass gear and it has made my winter riding sooooo much better. Keep up the great work!
Cool stuff. I look forward to watching more of your Baja adventure. It's on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm. May the stars be with you.

Happy birthday, Ryan. Ran my first marathon, trail of course, today too. Ok, ran 35k, then limped slowly the rest of the day. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video. I was looking for videos on the Trek 1120 and found so much more. Good job!

Thanks! I love my 1120!
Amazing video! Late to the party here. Glad you finally got the 1120 back though! Yes I’ve seen the video. Thanks for sharing the guts of riding in Mexico. And the gear you had with you.
Just found your channel and binge watched the whole Baja series. About gear, it appears you guys went without a stove. Been bikepacking for a few yrs now. I've moved to the fat bike platform because of the versatility I have with wheel sizes. I can run 26"x whatever fat, 27.5 x 3.8" and 29X3". The 29+ gets the most use but there are times (such as bikepacking Death Valley and around Lake Mead) where I'm sure happy to have fat tires! Cheers to a great channel!
Great follow up vid. I found your vids while researching the 1120. I have moto biked in Baja. Your drone footage is awesome. Gonna try and get back down there this year. Keep the vids coming.

thanks Blair, more vids on their way!
You answered my questions here: sorry I did not see this before your recent video to return to Baja...I agree = the struggle with water and food in these locations. Contrast a tour like this versus going to Taiwan = can go really light + camp or credit card camp + food out of this world + beautiful scenery + tons of challenging road rides in tropical heat. Amazing job Ryan!
Great trip and great video. Congrats !
Good update , I got a mongoose rader 27.5 inch tire bike with disk brakes for Christmas and switched out the gearing from a old mongoose solution mountain bike which had 8 speed freewheel instead of the 7 speed freewheel and had the shimano speed shifters and derailers and swapped the handlebars and seat and crank arms and peddles of of it and now it’s a sweat bike, it rides more smooth with the big tires on it then my Raleigh Wyoming touring bike, really liking it , happy trails and god bless

Another great video. The lucylites are the bomb, I have a few myself. BTW, Happy early birthday!! May your next trip around the sun be filled with much more love, light, positive vibes and laughter. In celebration I am switching from the Phantom 3 to Mavic Pro. Off to Best Buy in the morning!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUZ!!!
The Lucy Lights are great. I have had the tiny on/off button wear out quickly on a couple of them, or get stuck, but they are so compact and give great light and even a distress signal that you hope to never have to use.Couldn't agree more about the Mexican people, and especially in more rural areas. Wonderful, warm, helpful, and giving. I've spent a lot of time there and the only time things have gotten sketchy is when too much alcohol is flowing. But give respect and a smile and it's always returned wholeheartedly.That bike just LOOKS super cool, too.Keep on duzing, Duzer!

What an adventure! I just finished watching this series and I have to say you've inspired me even more to try this out. I told my father that one day I'd do the baja divide but he said to not do it that they will steal my bike or worse, that many people don't come back from Mexico.

Great video and good information Ryan! I did not realize that the Trek 1120 is suspension less and setup 1X. I assumed you had front suspension and 2X11 or something when I originally watched the videos. You just became a whole lot tougher in my book. Lucy lights are awesome. Lots of people I know have and use them for all sorts of adventures from backpacking to sailing. The awesome part is you can attach them to the top of your bike rack or backpack during the day and will have light all night long if you wanted it. Keep up the awesome work.

Found your channel and have been bingeing! Love it. A question I've racking the brain with that you may uniquely be able to answer: Checkpoint or 1120, possibly into a Procaliber or Stache though? I'm looking for an adventure bike, literally for riding: Tour Divide, Trans Am, Baja Divide, Arizona Trail, that kind of stuff. ... I enjoy a more road bike-ish geometry (Checkpoint) but am held up by the 700x45 max-width, although the 1120 seems so HEAVY for any kind of efficiency. ... I have an old Diamondback Overdrive (hardtail mtb) that I altered with drop bars, a rigid fork, and I really love it but it's getting so worn out I am wanting to invest in something new. ... I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for the time you take making your videos. I appreciate you and your channel.
@duzer
4 жыл бұрын
If you wanna ride rough off road and single track trails, the 1120 is the way to go. The checkpoint is really only good for gravel roads, not mtn biking. happy trails!
What a great adventure! I'm still in school so im not close to funding trips like that, but I can drop 60 pounds this year I'll be set to live life to its fullest! I can't imagine eating 2 bean burritos in a day tho!

Thanks. So far so good. I noticed you have a lot of clearance with your 64 oz KleenKateen. I have the same using Salsa anything cage on the lower frame. I have 1mm clearance between the Kateen and the tire but I am using a 17.5 frame. What holder are you using?

Thanks. I have a Blackburn Cargo cage. I just tried it, but with a 64 oz Kleen Kateen and a Trek 1120 17.5 frame size, it will not clear the tire, not enough room. I will have to go a size down on the Kleen Kateen. The Salsa Anything cage clears with literally 1 mm clearance, not enough for my level of comfort.
Would love to do a tour with you man!

Lol. Great video Ryan. I love my 1120. I didn’t like the rear rack ! It’s weight limit was 26 lbs. I opted for the Blackburn Outpost fat rack, 70 lb capacity. Front rack works well 15 lb capacity. I started mtb’s when they first came out, late 70’s early 80’s. Love riding and the 1120 is a beast of a bikepacker. You’d be hard prest to do better ! See my video for my upgrades
HI Ryan, loved watching the videos, you are an inspiration to get out there and do it!! What drone did you take with you? I have seen lots of them but found that the smaller portable ones are very difficult to fly in a windy country. I live in the UK so it would be difficult 365 days of the year.....LOL,,,
@duzer
6 жыл бұрын
I use the DJI mavic, works great in wind too. I even flew it at high altitudes on Nepal. Thanks for watching!
I'm liking that rack and bag combo you got on the back. What kind are they and where did you get them. They are definitely the style I'm looking for for my bike.

I bring an electric razor and shave regularly on my bike tours. I have a theory why... In many places, people can perceive someone riding a bike with lots of bags and things loaded up as being homeless or a bum. But we're not (not all). A clean shaven face makes you more approachable and presentable, more susceptible to welcome gestures. On the road, 1st impression is vital.
@duzer
6 жыл бұрын
Well said, and I totally agree!
Great video! I have a question: did you replace the original handlebars? It looks like it comes with a more or less straight bar, but yours looks much more comfortable. Which did you install? Thanks and best wishes from the Netherlands!
@duzer
6 жыл бұрын
Nope, kept the bars that it came with...they're great! I love Holland!
Would you consider using a dynamo hub?
Just saw your video on the Checkpoint too- could you pick one over the other for the fun factor? I know terrain matters- but watching the varied terrain you rode in both videos I am curious if you have a favorite? Thanks!
@duzer
5 жыл бұрын
Doug Stroud fun factor ALWAYS goes to mtn biking. Always! 1120 is a fun bike, Checkpoint is a sturdy gravel machine.
So I took my first tour from Seattle to Chicago last summer, after watching your Transamerica trip with your girlfriend. It went amazingly well and the bes advice you gave me about gear was the electric shaver.
So awesome! (Greetings from Germany :-) )

Hello Ryan, I would like to ask you a question. I had a trek 1120 too and I think there is a problem on my frame. The problem is that chain is too close to the frame , I could say its touching. I wanted to ask you that is it normal?
Dude. Yes, it looks like a fun bike. But going on a tour on an unknown saddle? What were you thinking? I would not even leave the driveway without a B17. Those fit me perfectly.
@BikepackingJourney

Brooks b17 or b17 flyer special, cambium c17?
Ryan...Did you end up keeping the 1120? After it was recovered from the thief by your tenacious fan? I really like that bike based upon your review!!! I really want to start bike packing, and that 1120 seems like "the quintessential, purpose built bike-packing beast." So many of the "bike packing channels", seem to be so ANTI RACKS, but that seems insane, if you consider those amazing Orange 1120 racks. Fat bikes seem popular, as well, but I would imagine that their advantage is really just in the loosest sand and snow, and not worth the extra weight and drag on harder surfaces..., YES? Anyway, best of luck, and curious if the 1120 is still in your bike corral?

Ryan . at frame 12:00ish... why are the stars going in a circular pattern (revolving around you)? If they are a billion miles away and the earth is spinning (and you are on the equator) shouldn't they be going directly over head and disappearing over the horizon..? G'day Ryan, Colm here from Australia. great bike review and videos of all your adventures, what a shame some arse [ass] stole it. At the moment I've got a dual suspension mountain bike [specialised camber] and a Cannondale cyclocross bike, love getting out in the wilderness and being part of nature,it's awesome. I've been thinking lately about bikepacking and love watching youtube videos of everyones adventures. "I'M IN"! Australia's got some awesome trails,national parks etc.. for BP.. unfortunately the Trek 1120 is not available in OZ and I can't seem to look past that bike. So will have to try and work out a way to get one mmm?? ! Once I'm ready I'll ride the length of the murray river first and build it up to interstate trips. I rode a mountain bike around New Zealand once [hard yakka] and drove around Australia in a land cruiser yrs ago. but BP seems like the next step. Keep riding and post your adventures and one I'll try and do some riding in the US. cheers Colm

Ryan, I don't know if you'll ever see this question, but I'm wondering how the 1120 holds up on pavement. I really want to get one but with those 29s it seems like there would be a lot of resistance with a fully loaded up bike.
@duzer

Steve Aranda it’s definitely not fast on pavement...unless you pump the tires up a lot. This bike is meant for off road...but you can certainly ride pavement when needed. Hope that helps

Ryan after your trip you were sick for 5 days because of stomach issues. Do I remember this right? Was the food or water unsanitized? What could you have differently? Maybe fill up water bottle with Pepto Bismol? :) Also, being that it was colder at night- would you bring the same jacket with a tent or would you recommend a warmer jacket with a tent? Cuz there are so many down jackets out there I get dizzy reading up on all their specs. Same jacket would suffice?
@duzer
6 жыл бұрын
you are correct! The water was sanitized, food at restaurants is a crap shoot--you just have to trust that's it's clean...which it usually is, I was just unlucky. My jacket was perfect, didn't need anything bigger. it's super light, but also warm.
From watching a number of your videos, it seems like the loss of your 1120 is what lead you to Priority. If it hadn’t been stolen, would you still use it? I’m a roadie that has been heavily influenced by watching your videos. I like the fact that with the 1120, I don’t have to spend additional money buying racks for the bike, but I definitely see the goodness in the drivetrain Priority uses.

I'm researching the differences between these 2 Treks and trying to decide between these 2 bikes, and compare it to other touring/adventure bikes made by Salsa, Surly, and Specialized.

the 1120 is a much different bike than the 920. The 1120 is for strictly off road, it's a beefy mtn bike, the 920 can be used on roads and gravel, but I wouldn't take it on any technical dirt trails. Hope that helps. I love them both!

Thanks, Ryan. By the way, I watched your video detailing how you got one of your bikes back - awesome! I wonder if you could advertise on Craigslist or that website that the thief was using to try to sell both of your bikes, and post a STOLEN BIKE WARNING post with pics of your 1120? It might alert to purchaser and/or his friends that the bike was stolen. Good luck getting her back!
I need closure! How did it get stolen?
