    When I mid-tie the butt comes back to me once the tree comes to its plumb line at the rigging point

    That’s certainly a danger of mid tying pieces. There’s ways to mitigate that risk. The main one being that the rigging point was farther away from me than the distance between the rope tyed on and the butt. With all rigging techniques there’s inherent danger. It’s important to understand the potential, mitigate it as much as possible, and position your body in a way that it’s not going to be struck if things don’t go right. And a good rope guy helps
