Obesity is a complex medical condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat that poses a risk to health. A BMI of 30 or higher typically indicates obesity.
Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure performed on the stomach and/or intestines to induce weight loss. It's usually considered for individuals with severe obesity who have failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. Bariatric surgery works by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing malabsorption of nutrients, or a combination of both. The most common types of bariatric surgery include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding.
While bariatric surgery can be highly effective in helping individuals lose weight and improve obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, it also carries risks and requires significant lifestyle changes post-surgery. Additionally, it's crucial for patients to undergo thorough evaluations and counseling to ensure they understand the risks and benefits of the procedure and are prepared for the lifelong commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes that it entails.
