Traxxas BL 2s is not faster than a Titan 12T...initially... But it is still far better

Cars with a BL-2s tend to be geared higher out of the box making it seem it is a "faster" motor. But when a Titan 12T is geared as high as the BL-2s, it more than keeps up on a drag race. Here I give details about the two motors and I explain which is my choice and why.

I like the bl-2s system. It runs so cold. And the throttle response is not so bad for being an rtr system.

And I think you hit the nail on the head... for an rtr. It is great for what it is: a reliable systems to just have fun and not break the bank. My Slash 4x4 still has it. I just do not feel the need to replace it.

I find it funny and interesting that you’re talking about torching your Titan 12 turn with hard long runs. My son’s rustler has been fully built with everything except a brushless motor. It’s currently running the Titan 12T with stock gears on a VXL3S. She runs pretty good on 3s. Very quick and very maneuverable with plenty of low speed control. Something the other Traxxas brushless motors severely lack. It strikes a nice balance between the sometimes too fast Velinion and the too slow Titan on 2S. So far he’s put 8 or so 3s 5000mah packs through it and when he runs it in the wide open field, he’ll run it hard and fast for the entire pack. I like the sound the Titan makes on 3S it’s a very unique high speed brushed electric motor sound that just sounds cool to my ears. I know it’s not long for this world, and when it dies I’ll throw in a Velinion, I just thought I’d share my experience with it.

Wait, Titan 12T on 3s with an XL-5 esc? Or is it the Titan 21T or an XL-5HV? I never tried running and XL-5 on 3s. That sounds awesome. I may have to try it. I do like the Titan 12T on 2s. It just does not like heat. They do degrade. I wonder if the sounds if due to the brushes. That might be it. Long ago I had a 1986 F-250 diesel. I put dual long Thrush in it instead of the factory muffler. It sounded so nice. Got rid of much of the diesel clatter and kept the grunt. Sometimes I miss it, but it was 2WD and my needs changed. Totally off topic, I know. But sounds does make things seem cooler.

@@telecomandorc Hey sorry for any confusion, it is 100% a Titan 12 turn on 3S but the speed control is my VXL3S out of my Hoss which got a VXL4S swapped into it. Also I’m an automotive shop foreman by trade so I totally love the auto world and love diesels.

@@2down4up I did not know the VXL3s could run in brushless mode. I know the Tamiya esc can run both. I used to think only the XL-5HV in the TRX4 could do brushed and 3s. Cool. I will have to check it out. To be honest, that 1986 6.9L International Harvester engine was great. I forget the miles I put into it. She was slow but true to work. Just under 14K lbs. with trailer and load and passenger it would do 30MPH on Pacheco Pass here in CA. Part of me regrets selling it because they are not well understood by many people or taken care of. I replaced basic things like steering pump... I swapped the C6 with a ZF-47 (auto to manual conversion. Point it she was reliable and no leaks. I can go on and on. But they are so misunderstood and people thing they are not that good. But they are great in my opinion if you know how to drive and maintain them. Now I have a 1994 Flareside 4x4. I needed the 4x4 at the time. She has a 351W. Nothing wrong with the I-6 engines, but I just like the 351W. Maybe some day I will make a side channel and just have random talks about what I have done to upkeep these old trucks.

@@telecomandorc The VXL3s can run brushed motors, you just connect them to channel A and C. That’s it, there’s literally nothing else to do. No programming or setting or anything else. It’s even in the manual. Having been driving brushless for so long I forgot how smooth a brushed motor is at low speeds. But their brakes suck. Judging by the videos you make I get the feeling you’ve been around long enough or are knowledgeable enough to understand the importance of what I’m about to say next, the VXL3s has NO brushed motor limit. What I wouldn’t have given way back in the Novak/Tamiya/Reedy/LRP days to have a no limit ESC!!! I’ve still got my old rooster and I believe a super rooster lying around somewhere. Sad Novak is gone. Heck somewhere in storage I’ve still got my mechanical speed control from my very first hobby quality RC car. A Losi XXT sport or maybe a JRXT I can’t quite remember. It didn’t have the Hydra Drive. I guess I’m just not good at throwing away hobby parts. Anyways….. I totally understand needing 4wd. I live in the DMV (east coast) and my truck has 4wd if for nothing else then driving through snow. I wish we got more of it honestly. I don’t know anything about Pacheco Pass but based on how you used it as gauge, I’m gonna guess it’s a long steep grade much like the pass in Colorado on I70 that leads to the Eisenhower tunnel. I loved many of those old diesels, the purely mechanical nature of them was just somehow exotic in a simplistic way. However, I do understand why most people didn’t like them. Exactly what you said they didn’t know how to drive them or understand them. You could get some really good power out of them with a few basic mods. Though at the time they were still on sale, I don’t know if that was the case. As I recall that IH engine had the rotary pump correct? I seem to recall them being a little leaky and unreliable, though I may be totally wrong, that is a little before my time. If I had a diesel to mod, my first stop would be Gale Banks. I’d love to have a built 24V Cummins without all the emissions stuff or even a 12V. I’m by no means anti emissions, in fact my fairly modified daily still has functional cats. But I do know that over time, the EGR in particular starts to soot up the intake system. My ultimate dream truck would be a fully a custom Dodge Ram stuffed with a Detroit 8V 92! Man that has got to be one of my most favorite engines of all time! That and the Mercedes M159 motor. I’d also take a Ram TRX. Sorry for the long reply.

@@2down4up I may have to do a video and test the VXL3s vs. the XL5 just for kicks. As a kid I had a Nikko High Roller with a black Trans Am body... Then they made a smaller version and called it a High Roller and mine became the Car Crusher and the body was blue. Somewhere down the line a got a Slash. And got tired of so many videos here that seemed to be commercials for the "latest and greatest". Then I found "Ultimate RC" but the guy stopped making reviews. His stuff was good. By this time I had some Tekno's, AE's and other stuff. Fast forward, I get married and wife tells me to make a channel after one of my venting session regarding content. In a way, I try making videos in hopes I can get newbies in the hobby without breaking the bank buy stuff they don't really need or RC's for the wrong purpose. I am not quite there, I think, but hopefully they help someone. No worries on the long reply. I happen to be off today, and got rained one so fixing stuff outside is out of the picture. At least I finish building my gate yesterday. I almost with we had a pod cast to chat it up about these old betties. The very 92-ish Dodge you are talking about... some time ago I was at The Home Depot at a neighboring city with my wife and I see this guy drive and park his Dodge. I was chatting it up with this guy for a while. Love my wife but she did not get it. Beautiful truck with no visible lifting paint from rust but still used for "work"... pretty straight body, diesel, 4x4... and that awesome two tone paint from back them... that rat grey with the red across the side center. I'm probably not doing a good job at disrobing it. I am not against full restorations, but I like when old trucks look old but well kelp over the years. So, even with new paint, I do like the small dents here and there that make it look old but well kept. DMV, how are things with the bridge? It has been all over the news here in CA. I hear some aid might be given to business due to port closure. Pacheco Pass... you have a good idea. It connect the Central Valley with Central Coast... I-5 or Hwy99 with Hwy101. Fishing is not bad at the San Luis Reservoir but have not fished in over 5 years probably. I grew up in a farming community so International Harvesters where common... 6.9 and 7.3L IDI. The next most Cummins 5.9 before they jumped to a 6.7 (I think it was a 6.7). Exhaust temps are key and most people don't pay attention and start blowing gaskets. On the IH IDIs we did not have much trouble with the mechanical pumps. IT was usually batteries and injector o-rights. Batteries got old and they just would not crank hard enough. Or got air in the fuel system and they would not start. The 6.9L we converted all to 12V with a manual push switch. Reliable. But I think the Dodge Cummins had a better system by heating the intake instead of our Ford glow plugs. Not sure what they use now.

@@telecomandorc Hobby Wing 10BL120 is what's on my radar. It's going in a 2wd Rustler, so being able to fine tune the brake force and punch is what I'm after. Where I run isn't an organized course; so I'm not really looking for peak performance, mostly drivability and endurance. My goal is to match the performance of the 13T brushed motor I ran this past year; but be able to run more than one pack without overheating.

@@k2them I do have this video for the 10BL120: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l62Jk7yAc8LTe7w.html It is a very nice system for a truck. It cogs too much if gear too high, like in a 4-Tec 2.0. But one would never gear it nearly as high in a truck, so it actually runs smooth in one. I know you said you are not looking for peak performance, but this motor is quite impressive.

@@telecomandorc I know the HW stuff is good, and their 3652 motor is my alternate to the BL2s. I'm considering the BL2s simply because it's difficult to do effective cooling on a Traxxas 2wd platform; and the BL2s solves that. Since you've done so many tear downs, maybe you can confirm something for me? I've always considered the Titan 550 to be a "540" motor in disguise. Sure, the CAN is 550 sized; but the insides are a 540 brushed motor. The extra length comes from needing room for the fan. I think the BL2s is similar. It's got the same can size as something like a HW 3660, but the functional stator and rotor are closer to a 3652.

@@k2them Yes, and yes. The BL-2s is not power house, but it runs cool and works well. After I destroyed one to make kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZej1MyDoNfbo7A.html I went ahead and bought a new one. I think I will just leave it in my Slash 4x4. It does what I want in it. And the fan makes it larger, but you are right. I have some of these motors taken apart. I might make a video in the next few weeks now that I think about it. Thanks for the lead.
