I bought an x-maxx last week and it came with the upgraded hubs already installed. I think if it has an X at the end of the model number then it's been upgraded, not 100% sure but seen a few comments about it.

Built a full Alu7075 Vitavon xmaxx. Front and rear complete Alu inc bulkheads front and rear upper and lower. All the arms and everything else Vitavon make. Looks awesome.

Not perfect, nothing is really, but I think a great design all round is the Xmaxx. Yeah what you are saying about weight, yep, it's physics. Not to mention the Ally bit can transfer force to places you really don't want to break.
