Travels in Israel - Mediterranean journey | DW Documentary

Sineb El Masrar and Jaafar Abdul Karim toured 10 countries in more than two years for DW. The next stop in our series is Israel. With a fascinating and beautiful Mediterranean coastline, this nation is home to Jews, Muslims and Christians.
It’s Sineb El Masrar’s first time in Israel. In Tel Aviv, the journalist visits a synagogue serving a conservative community, and meets cantor Romina Reisin. In Jewish houses of worship, this role is traditionally reserved for men; Romina Reisin is an exception to that rule.
The journey continues to Acre, or Akko as it known locally, once a powerful port city. There are traces of the Ottoman Empire everywhere here, including at a 1,500-year-old palace lovingly restored and operated as a hotel by its owner Uri Jeremias. On the way to Haifa, Sineb meets Boris Libermann, head of engineering at the Hadera Desalination Plant, one of the country’s largest. He explains how the tiny desert nation aims to combat chronic water shortages.
Most of the nation’s Muslims live in Haifa. Sineb is especially interested in the reformist Ahmadiyya community. Imam Muhammad Sharif Odeh explains how Jews and Muslims can coexist peacefully.
Sineb El Masrar talks to the Moroccan-born singer Neta Elkayam about their shared experience - growing up in a foreign country; and attends a concert by the musician held in Haifa’s Old Town. With familiar melodies still ringing in her ears, she sets off the next day for the West Bank. Together with "Rabbis for Human Rights", she pitches in to help a Palestinian family with the harvesting. This organization of Jewish rabbis is committed to improving human rights for all, regardless of faith, nationality and gender.

Yeah especially in English we tend to prefer subtitles - as much as a voice actor can try to approximate the original tone they will never be perfect. It is probably because in Germany there is a massive industry around dubbing - most foreign media is dubbed into German.

It's a great documentary. The only critique I'd like to raise, the holiest city for the Baha'i is Ako, where the Baha'u'Allah is buried. Haifa, as you correctly said, holds the shrine of the Bab, and it's therefore the second holiest site

@@skiesboi Ok. But their pilgrimages to Haifa and Akko are "Lesser Pilgrimages", the ones that are not obligatory. Obligatory pilgrimages are to be performed in Shiraz (Iran) and Baghdad (Iraq). Independent scholar of the Baha'i Faith, Prof. Denis MacEoin states the following about the Book written by Hatcher and Martin (two Baha'i scholars who are loyal to the Baha'i administration), _Errors stemming from a lack of familiarity with original source materials or ignorance of Islamic and Persian matters are not, of course, confined to issues relating to Islam as such. On page 180 [of Hatcher and Martin's book], for example, we are told that 'Baha'u'llah encouraged each of his followers to try, at least once during a lifetime, to undertake a nine-day pilgrimage to the World Centre of the Baha'i Faith in Haifa, Israel'. As in Islam, there are two types of 'pilgrimage' in Baha'ism: hajj and ziyara. The former, which corresponds to the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, is, in Baha'ism, a rite undertaken by men only, either to the house of the Bab in Shiraz or that of Baha'u'llah in Baghdad. It is this pilgrimage which was ordained by Baha'u'llah. Ziyara is a much simpler 'visitation' to the shrines of saints. In the case of the Shrines of the Bab and Baha'u'llah in Haifa and at Bahji, near Acre, it was 'Abdul Baha who prescribed the pilgrimage. The nine-day period and the format of the current extended 'pilgrimage' (which actually involved much more than plain ziyara) were largely worked out by Shoghi Effendi and the present-day Baha'i administration. The 'Baha'i World Centre' did not, of course, exist at the time of Baha'u'llah._ (Denis MacEoin (1987) Article, British Society for Middle Eastern Studies. The Levant was ALWAYS Africa, until before, when the "sea was parted" and even before, yet another story that began further-down the Upper Nile past Kush and Nubia and along the coast of the Red Sea introduced, over the course of time, the idea of monotheism into Egypt with earth shattering consequences. The Hellenicization and Latinization of Egyptian antiquity is a deliberate attempt to obfuscate the ancient history of Africa, and to hide known and evidenced history in plain-sight..

Forcing them out of their homes, terrorising and dehumanising them. The reporter didn't only glorify the settlers and the occupiers in this documentary but she also mentioned that the order and cleanliness -that she loves- are not so pronounced in the Palestinian territories, she basically said that Palestinians (the people who live under occupation on their own land) are not so clean. She also spoke with the Muslim Imam in disgust and disrespect and mentioned that men who don't pray with women in the same room are animals so she basically criticised the Muslim prayer but she never did so when the Jewish woman was explaining the Jewish prayer to her. Another great example of double standards and hypocrisy at its finest. Bravo free democratic journalism! Bravo DW TV and well done 👏 👏 !!

Wonderful Documentary. Great to see Haifa and the Baha'i Gardens included. Just a quick quote from the Baha'i writings. "O ye children of men! The fundamental purpose animating the Faith of God and His Religion is to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the human race, and to foster the spirit of love and fellowship amongst men. Suffer it not to become a source of dissension and discord, of hate and enmity." Also regarding equality of women and men which seems to be an important theme in your life. "The world of humanity is possessed of two wings - the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength the bird will not fly. Until womankind reaches the same degree as man, until she enjoys the same arena of activity, extraordinary attainment for humanity will not be realized; humanity cannot wing its way to heights of real attainment." Again Love your work Love and Peace to you all.

I think you had a very shallow take on the subject and you did not tackle the root of the issue. The guy mentioned the word "settlers" and it went completely by like it was nothing. Instead of using these shallow and simple words like "we need compassion and respect and hospitality is important", why don't we talk more about the settlers part?

  • @tahseen812

I guess you have high expectations here :-) What do you expect from a reporter who kept glorifying the settlers in the documentary and who mentioned that cleanliness and order is not so pronounced here in the Palestinian territories. She basically said that Paleatinians are not clean and she also told the imam that Muslim men who don't pray with women in the same room are animals. What do you expect from such a person? :-)

Remember Cyrus , Remember David , Remember all legendary kings that changed the world . Or just see our relationship after Islamic Revolution in my country . My Grandfather ( god bless him ) one day said to me , in about 1970s , Arabs invade Israeli state , that time Iran had best relationship with Israel . Iran supplied Israel energy and also in 1974 Asian games , Iran won Israel in final . Also Taj ( Esteghlal Fcl ) - Hapoel game . The Hellenicization and Latinization of Egyptian antiquity is a deliberate attempt to obfuscate the ancient history of Africa, and to hide known and evidenced history in plain-sight.
