Secrets of the Saudi State (Culture Documentary) | Real Stories

Фильм және анимация

We travel across Saudi Arabia and follow the reforms from within for a year. The country wants to diversify its economy by opening its borders to tourism.
In Jeddah, many young people hope for change, demanding greater equality between men and women, but the conservative opposition is enormous. One wrong word and they can be arrested. How far do they go in the fight for freedom?
Saudi Arabia is well known across the world for its wealth, strict faith and oppression, but while Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has decreed that it wants to reform, the world is startled by the murder of journalist Khashoggi and other human rights violations.
We follow the developments from the inside, through the eyes of the inhabitants themselves. Are they just empty promises or is Saudi Arabia actually able to change?

I lived and worked in Saudi Arabia almost 30 years. I have great respect for the country that allowed me to Provide for my family. I raised my family there also. My wife is a nurse and I am an engineer that works in construction. Saudi Arabia has been good to us but... there is a big but.... if you can live with all the restrictions and doesnt have a choice to go somewhere that has freedom. Then it is ok. But if you value your freedom more than anything else... then Saudi is not the place for you.

I was living in dammam on the first day women were allowed to drive and movie theaters opened again....i can tell you first hand that there was an overwhelming electric feeling of hope as I rode into work that night and seeing a carload of women with giant smiles and conversations filled with joy and hope. Education of the average saudi citizens is what is fueling this evolution and change for all facets of life in ksa. I personally love this country and would love to go back to see the growth of a country unfold before my eyes.

Definitely just a figure of speech also you make no sense even if it wasn’t . How would a man walking behind a woman ensure her safety? Had to be one of the dumbest comments in awhile. For starters I’d he is in front of her he will be the first to receive the danger . Wether it be something small like something she may trip and fall on if he is walking ahead of her then he can clear the path for her. If there is something dangerous approaching a wild animal or someone with a gun he needs to b in FRONT of her to protect her . Even with all that said alot of these things get exaggerated for the sake of a video

It's unfortunate that the video's guide called Abeer "combative" (see 10:45) for being professional and persistant in exceling in her profession and pursuing her certification. Clearly she is proud of Saudia Arabia and wants to share her country's rich history and heritage with the vistors - they are all hoping will come. Abeer is also showing great care and leadership to the next generation...and surely that would not send a good message to those wanting to visit if they couldn't even allow women, who are already familar with the country, to be tour guides.

Combative often has negative connotations, but I don't think he meant it in a negative way. The definition is "ready or eager to fight or argue", which is pretty accurate to her attitude of wanting to change the rules to make them less oppressive.

First of all the publisher cut off a lot of her speech and second of all she never said, she wasnt happy in Saudi Arabia. People behaving like she tries hard to escape, but thats not the case. She even said, she wouldnt like to put off her Hijab and she also said she wouldnt like to go to mixed parties. So not so "free" like you all wished her to be. She is adorable, no question. Thats why the Arabians try to do everything to protect their daughters without restricting them too much. That strange preacher said something very beautiful: Women are the souls of our bodies. Maybe we should have a look at our women first before pointing to others. I can relate with an Islamic girl ao much more than with a liberal Western girl. I always felt like that.

This is untrue in modern ksa cities. Young Men and women are still introduced to each other through the elders and spend many hours getting to know each other to see if there is a connection. If there is not a connection, either person can express their disinterest in that person and will go look for another mate. Yes, you can still find forced marriage in the deep tribal villages but is slowly being done away with.

Dear Real Stories, Is Farah ok and safe? I’m really worried about her safety. Ladies in Saudi please feel free to move to Kenya, Africa where you will have your full freedom. You don’t need a lot of money. If you have $100k you’ll live a very good life and start a good business. But please leave that oppressive country 🙏🏾

Plus, Saudi is far better than Kenya in terms of safety, stability and future, let alone we are not talking about Kenya corruption. Let buy into the propaganda, go to Saudi and see yourself. I would be happy to send references your way

As a convert to Islam, it makes me sad when I see born Muslims make decisions to change the way they dress, such as removing the hijab. They discard something a lot of converts embrace, they were born into the religion but can't see the beauty of modesty....I am in full support of each person deciding for themselves how they will live their life. It is a delicate balance, for sure.

Looks interesting! Areas of strong faith are statistically linked to higher violence against women and families. I would love to see everyone open their eyes to their personal power and intuition. Religious beliefs are often used as a scapegoat for when humans do terrible things. They like to make it seem like we need someone better than us to care for us, like we are children who cant think for ourselves. Freedom

Maybe to avoid her having a chance to get pregnant before marriage or to make sure she’s getting with someone who’s serious. I don’t really agree with it. Engagements are a big promise to make. Some people do have boyfriends/girlfriends in places like Kurdistan, Turkey and Lebanon cause they’re not overly Conservative** however they get judged especially if they’re women.
