Six young fashion lovers swap shopping for the factories and backstreet workshops of India to learn how the clothes they wear are manufactured. The group embark on the most shocking leg of their journey so far in Mumbai, as they are put to work in the backstreet factories of Dharivi, the largest slum in Asia. "How can you live like this?" How can they not? Given the same circumstances in life, born in a poor family, you would do anything to feed yourself and family. Education, religion and culture play an important role in building sustainable societies, the government should tackle those ones first.

The 3 women are walking around India acting like Karens.. complaining to the wrong people completely, storming out of factories, saying the place smells and what not. It was actually hard to watch considering most of these people have no other choice and those 3 privileged women walked in and complained to no end... Yeah it's bad and they shouldn't be in those positions but it is a poor country, the government keeps slums like this alive, aswell as every country buying these goods. But what is the alternative... It's the only way they make money. Awful awful awful.

I have to suspect the India has a mix of issues as regards education. I do not know a great deal about Hinduism. But in Africa - which actually has a far far worse issue of population increase because of the future projections. The truth is the data from places like India and China is a natural leveling off of population increase. I think the action being proposed in India is too late and why India is a country where most people seem to want to get out - if they could. A lot of these areas of rapid increases in population have a strong religious component. Allah will decide how many children you will have and then the attitude of the Catholic Church in the Philippines as an example. These powers work to stop sexual education, are anti contraption and anti abortion. How do you change this ? Then there is the cultural aspect. From Ghana, talking to a girl there I asked her how many siblings she had. She said 21 - her father had 3 wives (she was unemployed and was desperate for some old White man to take her out of Ghana). I said well that’s your problem then and her reply was “but that is our culture”. I am not sure just how much women are subjugated in India and how much control they have over their own bodies. Then you have the caste system. So, no it is not just a matter of education.

This will win over old ideas and superstition eventually Women who are educated, given control of their fertility can become so much more for their country other than baby making machines. The problems you.mention are there and in other developing countries but they aren't unsurmountable and precedents exist. Social engineering of an enforced kind will lead to the problems like those unfolding in China.( Aging non productive workforce with predicted pop lower than 1B) . I can't see a humane alternative to education but perhaps you have ideas?

Poverty is a byproduct of colonialism in large part. Ending corruption in India is only part of the problem, because how do you fix the problem when most of the evil lies in the colonial systems that exist between rich and poor countries. This is why Gandhi wanted self autonomous communities and not to have too much dependence on the west. Makes sense. Even defining poverty is colonial in my opinion. I am american, I live a privileged life.

However, a lot of these people don't have the options we do or even know another way of life. The ONLY thing that matters to them is money. The hope and finance to provide a better life. It's up to the consumer and the companies to establish change. If a company sources their clothing in India, they're just as responsible.

its heartbreaking because sometimes we are brought into tough circumstances due to our upbringing, and yes we all have talents and abilities, and we can change our destiny, its not easy though... and these factories are employing people and paying them, sure it's not right, but it could be helping people who have to put food on there plate, there are far worse conditions in other parts of the world too. Its not easy to break out of poverty, and also we can't even begin to judge either. I am all for we can change our circumstance. but i can't say that i could do it in there circumstances either. Sometimes they can't afford a school education, sometime's they are manipulated into living a different life. I walked away from a job that would be considered absolutely rich to them, however i have the option to do this. And maybe the owner is helping the boy contribute to his family that need food. we don't know. these stories drive me to become very wealthy so that i can give back.. i want to one day donate 50% of my income and really travel the world giving back, it's humbling, not to mention mental health is a serious problem, that gentlemen in the shop, i could see his innocence and pain, of course he doesn't want to do it, As if you cant see the sorrow in his eyes. To me just hugging people like that would be my dream, i know what it's like to struggle truly. And i can honestly say so many people have no idea how tough it truly is to live in these peoples shoes. sometimes i really admire these people... they find joy and happiness in the toughest places and enviroments. that's true courage and wealth. there is a lot we can learn about this, and develop our own humility. the job i declined well they all spoke hindi this was in australia, and only 3 out of 30 were actually australian, i declined the job, for the working conditions, the women got treated as royalty and got to sit down on the easy jobs too, the managers don't speak english, they don't pay what they should legally. they don't even pay night rates. So i left, however these guys are immagrants and there studying to so it comes down to survival for them they have to.

Great title, "Poverty documentary". Must be a great feeling to watch it when you feel low and end up grateful. You are only looking at the symptoms, did you try to find the root causes? Things are surely deeper than this. I would say there are two root causes: 1. The colonial looting. Go find out how much of that loot is in the tax havens of UK and why is your govt. not transparent about them? 2. The owners of those factories were once very poor and were exploited and their bosses and their bosses too. Guess who were the first bosses? There is someone/many even now who keeps a bunch of people perpetually poor so that there is always someone who works for cheap, locally and globally.

The young westerner asked the young Indian lad whether it was difficult working hard for his family as appose to him working for himself. The question reveals how the average westerner view the importance of family in his life. In many developed countries the thought of sacrificing ones life for family is not at the top of the list. Its obvious the Indian lad loves his family and understand how important it is to help support his family financially as much as he can, given the poverty they are having to live in. The Westerner can learn from him how not to look out for his own selfish interest. For him to leave and strick out on his own would have an extremely negative outcome for his family as a whole. Its the family unite that helps them get through the poverty unjust treatment they are having to endure.
