Travels by Narrowboat - Lancaster Canal - All Good Things - S07E11

Here we go then folks - 2 years after arriving on the Lancaster Canal, I can finally complete my journey to the canal's northern most terminus, at Tewitfield.
Leaving Carnforth and with the continuing and constant threat of rain, I journey along the final 4 miles or so.
Along the way, I experience what this canal has to offer - spectacular scenery and enticing views of the Cumbrian and Lake District hills in the distance.
Of course at the moment, it's not possible to enjoy these hills close up, as the canal finishes abruptly at Tewitfield - the final 15 miles to Kendal cut off all those years ago, by the M6 Motorway.
Regardless and after reaching Tewitfield, I take a stroll along part of the old 'Northern Reaches', showing you some of the surprisingly intact locks.
Finally, I discover to my delight that a 'mysterious' viewer (called 'Si The Pie'), has kindly left me a very tasty treat on the front deck of Aslan - which I quickly put in the oven. Yum.

Been meaning to write something for some time now. Really can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed watching Travels by Narrow Boat over the last year and a half. Travels by Narrow Boat is equal parts entertaining, illuminating, and fascinating as Keven educates the world (or at least those of us who watch in America) about a slice of English history, culture, and life most of us undoubtedly had no idea existed. Would also like to add that Keven is a pretty fantastic video editor and narrator. Please keep up all your amazing work Mr. Shelly. Got so bad the only option was to have 3 vertebrae fused together, which would have reduced mobility considerably. Strangely however, once I got on the boat, the pain ended and hasn't returned since. Hi Kevin. I volunteer with the Lancaster Canal trust who have a trip boat 'Waterwitch' on the northern reaches , at Crooklands, 8 miles up the canal from Tewitfield. A 'virtual' cruise does exist at : www.lctrust.co.uk/gallery/virtual-tour Its encouraging to see comments from people wanting the top end of the Lanky to be restored. its a very big project to do it all in one so future strategy might be to tackle it in different sections. The last 6 miles is dry into Kendal and the towpath is currently being made/improved into a Towpath Trail. work also going on between bridges 172 and 173 to repair and refill with water, then re-join to the 'watered' section before it. Lots going on but most of it is background work that people won't see. Glad you made it to the end of the Lanky.

Mr Gent, I saw the narrow boat stuff on Amazon some time back and avoided it studiously. How interesting could it be? Then one day I tuned in to your dark Sith competitor and it was off to the races. After a time we found you and left him moored up somewhere until we binge up all your stuff anyway. Starting, I had NO idea what to expect, and I'm no dummy. Cucumber sandwiches and lifted pinky? What? 1. I had NO idea jolly ol had that much countryside. True, trees are kinda sparse....but all that open country astounded me. I would have thought that starting 100 years ago it would have been wall to wall housing. Some as nice as Henry Potter's urban home before he hopped the train for Voldemort....but no more than 24x24 back yard 'gardens'. 2. Learned that nobody waves in jolly ol. Know all ducks of Britland now...and some feisty swans. Looked up what in the hello is a pork pie? Got the recipe but I'm not going to try it. 3. Multiply all prices x2 to arrive at what similar would cost here. 4. Can actually understand you, except when you feign a British accent, sounding much like an American feigning a British accent. 5. Did research on 16ft fishing poles of the canals. Never did exactly learn if the fish in those ditches are actually edible. I think I'd not partake. Boat guys DO NOT FISH, btw, even in the rivers. Not one bass boat in sight. Incredible. 6. Enjoyed seeing the innards of Britland in the various ports of call. Had no idea what to expect. 7. Suspect that narrow boating here, had we canals, eating hamburgers and hot dogs every day, you would soon bloat and die. You do eat strange food. You would be a favorite with the little old ladies on eating days at church, as you do know how to put it away. We're just now getting into the epicurean episodes. Typical: "And tonight I will be making a delicious sweet banana pudding. First, saute two large sweet onions..." I suspect that somewhere on that narrow boat lurks a very fine computer operated off of hot water from your very fine diesel and sunlight only. A mystery how you edit using only stone tools whilst (whilst...I can write Brit when I want to) sitting on a bear skin carpet. We are hooked, thank you very much. Kind of like watching videos from Mars or something. They have canals there also. Please carry on as they say in jolly ol so that we may be amused, educated, and delighted here in the back woods of Alabama. I doff my cranberry to ye.

As a student, I lived for the final year of my 3 years Art & Design Degree in a narrowboat on the canal. That was in 1981-82 (40 years ago). Many of my memories had faded until I saw this series on Amazon Prime Video. Since then, I've been engrossed, and have been watching several series back-to-back ever since. Thank you, Kevin, for a fantastic collection 🤝 Rick

Wonderful memories Rick and what a fabulous time to be young and at art college/uni AND living in such an unorthadox (at the time) way. Perhaps the hiring of a narrowboat for a week is on the cards, just for old time's sake? Cheers,

@@CountryHouseGent Sadly, I'm afraid you're right. I now live only 1/4 mile from one of the reopened sections of the Basingstoke Canal, and you've sparked that long-forgotten longing to put-put-put slowly through an ever changing vista for a day or five along the canal 😄, darn it! -- Rick

I do hope they take up your 3 point plan to reopen the way all the way to Kendal. It's hard to imagine the decision making process that led to NOT building a bridge right there. I'm so glad you went to look at the other side for us. It doesn't look as difficult as some of the other reopenings underway. Well done to Si the Pie 🥧 for making the end of your journey in such a delicious way. Thanks for the beautiful views. I especially enjoyed the rope swing. I'm glad to see that is still a thing!!
