Great video Thomas - it's so refreshing to see content about OM Systems that isn't 'just' wildlife and landscape photography. I know they're pushing themselves in that direction, but having a compact, lightweight and weather sealed system (the only manufacturer to have their kit tested to an IP standard as far as I'm aware) is really useful for street and travel photography too. It's also great to totally dispel the myths about MFT sensors being substandard (and I say that as a Fuji X-H2 user who picked up an OM-1.2 and is thinking it might dethrone said Fuji!).

An important aspect of the OM-1 is that taking pictures with it is just fun. And it got even more fun once I upgraded to mark 2 ;)

Thats good, but lets not pretend the Mark 2 is so much better, because it is just bit of firmware update and some memory upgrades for the processing unit.

Great advice about getting the OM1 mk1 while it is still available. The camera previously sold in the UK for £1999. This week I picked one up for £1378 with a free 2x converter 😊. I already had the em1 mk1, em1 mk2 and em1x. I have watched several of your videos about the OM cameras over the last couple of weeks and found them very educational. Thank you.

I first purchased the OM-5 and primarily use the 12-45 f/4 and the 20mm f/1.4 with it. A terrific combination for street, for travel, in good weather or bad. I recently purchased the OM-1 mk i used and am really impressed. It is an amazing camera I still learning to use. When the winter holidays approach, I may trade up to the OM-1 mk ii, unless OM Systems announces an OM-5 mk ii this year.

I wanted to say that your latest video was incredibly refreshing, educational, and professional. Your insights into the Olympus/OM-1 system cameras are always the most informative and logical. For travel photography, I particularly appreciate the versatility of the 12-100mm F4 lens and the artistic capabilities and sharpness of the 45mm 1.2, which remains my all-time favorite Olympus prime lens. The 45mm focal length is perfect for capturing stunning shots of Budapest's castle, parliament, and other landmarks from across the Danube. Budapest is especially enchanting at night, so it would be fantastic to see some night photography from your trip as well. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you for all your efforts!

Didn’t realise I’ve been in & out my local American Embassy here 😂 love the story-telling, often we go for a trip, took lots of photos, sort & edit them, and these went straight to HD storage and failed to create a story. I must practice this. Thank you.

I have two Olympus OMD cameras, the EM1 MKII & MKII and the EM5 MKIII AND EM10 MK 4.I Also have a Panasonic G9 and G95 along with a handful of zooms and prime lenses, my favorite all around lens is the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 such a versatile lens. The great thing about the 4/3 system is that the camera and lens are very compact making it easy to pack the above zoom and a few primes, great camera for travel.

When I go on a trip, I carry the 7-14 f2.8 with me. I must pay attention to shoot parallel to the ground, but the panorama is fantastic. Especially if there are clouds in the scenario. I also love flares, in that case. Perfect in interiors of palaces. Not for people. And also 75-300 in the luggage. Good video and smart editing. I like it

Great video! As someone that uses an E-M1X for photojournalism work everyday, its really refreshing to see something that's not birds and landscapes, being shot with an OM camera! In my everyday work I often get the odd look here and there, and the occasional "oh, m43 can do that?!" and it brings me great pleasure in enlightening people about the amazing work that out system does. I use a 12-40 f/2.8 and a 40-150 f/2.8 and there hasn't yet been an event or an occasion where I didn't get my shot, regardless of scene, distance, light, etc. Amazing cameras, amazing lenses! Also, that same backpack is what I also use and I love it - it packs everything I need AND more! Sometimes I put ALL of my lenses and bodies (two e-m1x and one e-m1II) so that's basically a photo studio on my back wherever I go! Love it! Great video again! Great video, very enjoyable. I myself visited downtown Montréal today with my OM-1 and mostly the 12-100 f/4, by far my favorite lens as it is so versatile. I did switch to the 8-25 when I needed to shoot wider but eventually came back to the 12-100. I really love this kit: 16 to 200 in 35mm format in a small, light sling bag.

I recently took my OM1 to southern Spain, where I visited several mosques and cathedrals. I was shooting handheld at F4, up to about 10,000 iso, using the high res. mode, which gave me exposures of about 1/60 to 1/80. The images were smooth and without noise, with very nice dynamic range, even at iso 10,000. Of course, you are limited to subjects which don't move, and you have to wait while the camera processes the file, but the images were comparable to full-frame, if not better. In the old days, I used to shoot bursts and combine later in PS; now the camera does it for me on the spot, and spits out a nice raw file! This is my favorite feature on the OM1, and I use it all the time when travelling.

Excellent video! I've become a big fan of Thomas Eisl over the past months and look forward to his videos. My wife and I are visiting Budapest in September - so I appreciate the views of the city! We will also be in Vienna on the same trip. Perhaps I will be fortunate enough to run into Thomas while there 😀

Great video and I completely agree with your lens choices for travel. For my recent trip to Switzerland I considered a number of lenses but took the 12-45 f4 Pro and 20mm f1.4. Both weather sealed and both very sharp lenses that complement each other and provide the flexibility required for travel photography as well as being light and compact.

I got the 20mm pro a few months back as my first weather-resistant lens for my OM-5. Very versatile for the bulk of my shots.

Thanks for the video! I used Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art w Nikon APS-C for city reportage and street photograhy. I changed gear to OM-1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 Pro for same purpose with good focal length range and compact size. And with the OM-1 superb image stabilizer, the F2.8 would work well for low light conditions.

Such a beautifully shot and edited video! Very entertaining and educational:)

Great video Thomas. A change from the technical use to practical use and such an inspiration to use the lenses I have. Personally I prefer the 12-40mm f2.8 and the 25mm f1.2 for travel, but they are a bit bigger and heavier, so not everyone’s cup of tea. Love your work!

I have the 12-45 f/4 Pro. Image quality is wonderful and this lens does indeed cover almost all my needs. And it's a small, light lens. As Thomas points out, the minimum focus distance is very close and handles everything short of specialized macro photography like insect portraits. In the middle distance, however, a shallower depth of field than that afforded by f/4 would be helpful to isolate subject from background clutter. That's when the f/1.4 20mm might come in handy, but I think I would rather have the f/1.2 45mm Pro for those situations. But seriously, for classic street photography and the occasional surprising closeup, the 12-45 is a great choice.

I was really surprised by the quality of the built-in mic. That sounded genuinely good. Normally it feels like manufacturers include tinny mics as a box ticking exercise only. Not in this case. And I’m definitely a natural telephoto shooter. I’ll only go wide when I’m forced to in a situation. Otherwise I’m at 40mm on my 12-40 f2.8. Also I totally agree about the OM-1 Mk1. It’ll stand the test of time for sure.

Nice video and info as always, thanks! My travel set is 12-100/4 and 7-14/2.8. If I really expect low light I include a non-pro bight prime to save space and weight. For second body I take TG6. I recently went to Mt Athos monastic region, hiked 3 days on nature >12km/day and had 7kg all together clothes, food, water and photo gear. f2.8 was fine even in dark churches, I could use less to get sharp internals. High res was super to rectify geometry and have enough resolution. All hand held with amazing sync is on 12-100, tripods not allowed, and heavy anyway. Couldn’t do this with full frame.

Hi Thomas, great video, really nice to see you using the 20mm and 12-45mm Pro lenses. I used these two lens and the 40-150mm Pro with the EM1 MK 2 as my main carry. I am just a hobby photographer so I am not planning an upgrade to the OM-1 just yet. What was the filter, clear, UV, or other? Thanks for taking us along. I use the same combination as you do but also add a 8-25 f4 to my EM1 MK 2 kit when traveling. I also like using the 12-100 f4, but it is also quite big and heavy which can't reallly be avoided. Since the OM1 MK 2 was released, I am thinking about buying an OM1 MK 1 as well. I do know, that FF enthusiasts claim, that f4 is like f8 on FF and thus unusable, but I honestly never had lighting problems with f4 as a maximum aperture with the EM 1 MK 2 or EM 5 MK 3 or EM 10 MK 3 (which was my first Olympus camera).

Thank you for the video and tour. Very helpful. I’m going to try your focusing tip on the Em5mkiii. Did you at all miss a longer focal length during this trip? Is there a reason you chose the Om1 over the om5?

Thanks for the kind words and excellent questions: I really did not miss longer focal lengths, as I did not really aim for capturing wildlife or similar subjects which would have required that. One lens that would be an idea "just in case" longer focal length is IMHO the 75mm f/1.8. Regarding the OM-1: as I had to bring one OM-1 to VLOG/film, I decided to go for 2x OM-1 bc of batteries and potential backup. Also, I thought it would be nice to highlight that the professional OM-1 is really light and compact enough for travel and street. Best, Thomas 📸

Thomas, I bought my OM-1 MKII just recently. I downsized from Nikon full frame. My D700 and the lenses were fantastic. I took them literally around the world. The OM-1 MKII is a fantastic successor, ergonomics are equal or better but functionality leaves the D700 in 2007 when I got that camera.

I am always considering between 8-25 mm (range 👍🏻) & 12-45mm (size 👍🏻)-> 🤷🏻‍♂️ . usually I also use in-camera digital magnification (2x) and I am happy with the results. Better than digital cropping on the computer.

(grabs camera)... damn doesn't highlight with the 20". Though I have used the regular focus stacking with the 20mm but its soo much easier using in-camera.

Hey Thomas, fantastic content as usual. I have an OM-1 and a Nikon Z8. My Z8 has 5 .5 stops of stabalisation and the OM-1 7.5 stops. Why is the stabalisastion much better on my Z8 than the OM-1? This is especially noticeable when I compare the OM-1 with the 300mm and 1.4TC and the Z8 with 600mm and 1.4 TC. The Z8's stabalisation is rock solid, but I feel I need a mono pod with the OM-1. Nikon's 5.5 stops is far superior to the OM-1s 7.5 stops. Is there no parity of stabalisation comparason between camera brands? I to use the OM-1 for close-up and insect photography and the Z8 for wiledlife and birds. The Z8 gives me far more reach because of the 45mp sensor and crop factor.

Great video! Is there a good reason why you have not upgraded to the OM-1 MarkII, because would it make more sense for me to buy an OM-1 and possibly use the savings on a lens?

Thank you! Well, actually I have two Mark I and one Mark II. Price-wise, the Mark I is impossible to beat. If you can live with the Olympus logo and a bit less performance, then the Mark I plus a lens is definitely the right call!

Hi Thomas, nice video. For my choice, I prefer the ranges provided by the 7-14 f2.8, 12-40 f2.8 and 40-150 f2.8. Each lens gives me a low-light capability for early morning, evening light and includes the special those special focal lengths. Should I want to do birds in flight, fit a 2 times extender to the 40-150, f2.8 giving me 300mm at f5.6. Should I want a faster lens, bring along the 17mm or 25mm f1.2.

A top quality video as always! I haven't warmed to that 20mm lens. I prefer the Oly 17mm f1.8 😉 I have thought about getting the 12-45 F4 Pro to replace my Lumix 12-32 f3.5-5.6. Is that 12-45 f4 Pro so much better? For the OM-1, I think it is overkill for my needs and a lot. Maybe the OM-5 II will be launched this year to tempt me?

I either use C-AF or C-AF+TR (check out my video on that) or really just the MF override. Depends on whether the AF target point is next to the subject or not. Speed is everything in some situations.

@@ThomasEisl.Photography I understand your process which is why I wondered if you had tried touch screen focus and capture…. watch the scene on the screen until the moment arises, touch the subjects, cameras focuses and takes the shot with a touch of the screen, no placing the focus point with the joystick or focusing. Seems pretty quck on my older cameras but not tried it for street photography

@MrDunk66 ahhh! Misunderstanding - yes, I've done that as well. It is - as you've said - also a viable method. You just have to make sure the subject is big enough, otherwise the camera might focus on the background.

It really depends on what you already own. For example, if I have a 1.8 Premium M.Zuiko prime already, I would go for the 12-45. or 12-40 f2.8 If my setup lacks a high end zoom, then I would go for the 20mm. If I had only 1 lens for my whole setup, I would definitely go for the 12-45/12-40 as it covers "everything". Hope this helps!

I carried my OM-1 all day with a 17mm 1.6 lens with no trouble, and I did this for four days. I found the 17mm lens fun to use. Thanks for sharing your experience with the OM-1. (If you would like to see the pictures, see my channel)

Hi Tomas, I watched your nice reportage about your city trip to Budapest. I noticed that you tended to go to the upper limit of exposure for your photos. Is there a specific reason for this?

Wide angle, some of my best shots were taken with the Samyang 7.5 fisheye, just need to make sure things are centered correctly, and the 20m lens is a dud focal length, neither 17mm or 25mm. should have been a 17mm

Ah, no particular reason. But what I like about the 12-45 especially when combined with the 20 is: Same filter size, same lens hood, and the 12-45 is indeed smaller and lighter.

Managing to watch live whilst in hospital but I can't find the chat box option. Maybe it's not available on mobile mode.

Indeed I do - on every lens all the time! It is just difficult to see in the video. I think protective filters are the best investment ever, and very practical.

Good answer, good reply. I use them depending on the kind of use. I think that in a comfortable zone, it can be used lenses without protection to exclude unwanted reflections

Scolville of 10k. Come on man, down some wings in reaper or ghost peppers. Gotta get up to 350k. We need some Buffalo wings. That would create some great photography. "Whats wrong Thomas?, food a little kicking?" [Click] Food looked awesome though and congrats posting some real food vs creators posting rabbit food (veggies only). Didnt get a chance to watch all bits ealier so going back restart. I can imagine these longer videos take a ton of work but the tag-along type videos are definitely top-teir when complete

I know, 10k is not a lot - I was surprised that they did not have hotter stuff to offer! So I'll take you up on your offer regarding the Buffalo wings haha. Editing: You are completely right - this was one of the most time consuming videos to make (except the OM-1II review, which took me literally a month), but now, positive feedback like yours is the ultimate reward!

Try Panasonic 9mm. ( If OM allows you do that…)

I have been using my OM-1 since it was released and for the life of me, I can't find any reference to it being a Mark 1 anywhere ? this is a bit misleading and unnecessary to say, but yet, I still see lots of content creators doing this, my Mark II has that reference on it on the lower front of the camera, so I know where that comes from .... beyond that, my thanks go to you, for taking us along on your train trip to Budapest - a place I will most likely never get to experience in my lifetime......Hearing your comment about manual focus override being in constant use rings true with me also, since the majority of what I shoot is wildlife, where many times there is no second chance to grab the shot and the main subject will be partially or fully obscured, it's a great way to "see" with focus peaking where the plane of focus actually is - important when you want the eye and not really the tip of the nose on a Beaver in the midst of the reeds on a pond....... I try to relay this to others around me when we go out on a shoot together, but many of them are shooting another brand and mention that they don't know how to set that up, or it will take too much time or set up.... " that's what custom modes are for" is my response to them........I try.......
