Traveling with no money | Edouard Jacqmin | TEDxZaragoza

Traveling with no money can teach you what you have to give instead of what you'd like to get from people you meet along the way. Being independent of money during 21 days makes you dependent on people and you can learn how to turn your fear of approaching strangers as well as you fear of being rejected in your favor.
Edouard, 24, is a composer, a songwriter and a producer from Belgium. He graduated from the Middlesex University of London in music composition in 2015 and over the past year and a half he has been releasing music and gigging. In June 2016 he took his guitar on his back and went on a 21 days moneyless journey across Eastern Europe. Through hitchhiking and asking random people in the street “Hello, can I sleep at your place tonight?” he managed to travel in 5 different countries without spending a cent. It is during this trip that he wrote his first EP ‘Happily’, released in November 2016. The EP contains the 4 songs he wrote in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary. He lives in Brussels and is currently working on his first album.

I just returned back to Slovenia after cycling trough italy for 4 months. I went from capital of Slovenia (Ljubljana) all the way down to Italy (Sicily) and back (total 3000km+/-). I also did it without money. When you're a traveler in others people eyes, they want to hear your story, they don,t mind helping you out. The more expirinces you get the bigger eyes are going to watch you when you tell them your story and more and more people will want to be a part of the whole expirience by helping you. In the end of september im leaving again. This time to Spain, with bike and without any money at all.

Travelling with no money sounds like a good idea to travel in Europe or Americas or other developed countries. But you may get in serious trouble if you try this in the developing or under developed countries. I am not saying people are bad there but the number of scammers is more. I recently came across James Asquith's video where he describes his experience of being one of the youngest people to travel the world (with money off course) and it was amazing.

Travelling alone and staying at random peoples house is not safe at all for womens. Then what should a woman do if she has no money in her pocket. How to travel around the world and survive without any money? How she arrange her transportation accommodation and food? @Tedx should make a right video for women travel guiding correctly and keeping them safe.

He may not have money to travel country to country but the people he asked for help must have had money. That's why he only had the 21-day journey. If anyone did at least once in their lives, what would happen.

Wrong. I have been doing this 5 years of my life and experience is same as his one. If you are scared or believe that you are in danger, then you are. I have never been in any dangerous situation by myself, the few times I was, it was because of unconsciousness of travel mates that put us in "danger". As first view you can of course just imagine that a woman hitchhiking alone is dangerous , but this is a very fast analysis. If you are aware and know how to be safe nothing will happen. We, professional woman hitchhikers now how to do it. Of course you can not just go anywhere on the road and be taking by anyone. If you ask girls like me , with broad experience, I doubt you will hear any bad story.

I believe it would be easier for a woman, but most women wouldn't push themselves to the point of travel without accomodations or luxuries they are already accustomed to. Women expectations are filled with dangers or entitled thoughts, a woman is sometimes too proud to ask for help or deal with adversity or even simple hard work. Women won't be able to deal with rejection and think being independent of societal norms as self destructive, you can't romanticize hitchhiking because you always have to be on your toes physically, mentally and emotionally and most women can barely control their physical means past what they represent to society. If she is all alone she will not have the biological need to appeal towards the strongest or most alluring in the tribe, she will regress to her animalistic impulse of needs. Women can be strong but I doubt they will be strong enough to survive a walk alone with no guarantee of help without letting go of pride and asking for help, they will merely expect it.

No, and for the same reasons you wouldn't, but he opened me up to considering to something I choose that would create a similar outcome: giving rather than taking. That's my takeaway from his talk.
