Traveling to a Country that was Closed for 40 Years

Thomas spent 7 days exploring around the countryside of Albania in the search for some of the abandoned bunkers left behind after the the communist dictator Enver Hoxha's brutal rule from the 1940's to the 1980's. Yet what we found after a few days was so much more than we'd originally come for. The nature, the kindness of the people and the rich history blew us away. We still left wondering what the future of these bunkers holds...

Send that little girl a camera and supplies to print. She'll be able to express the country in photos and since she is young be able to document the rebirth and healing of the country. Her and her family's good nature and kindness is wonderful and a great start for her photographic journey.

Just about two years ago I made a friend in college from Albania, and judging how kind she is and what she’s told me of Albania and her family there, Albanians strike me as very generous, humble, and kind with a great sense of community. Not to mention there seems to be lots of history I’d like to learn more about and the country itself looks beautiful! I definitely would like to visit.

I visited Albania with my girlfriend two years ago and my experience was exactly the same. At one point we needed to take a cab from one city to the next and we got in a car with a random guy who offered to drive us for a small fee. We deeply regretted getting in a car with a complete stranger, but after a 30 minute drive he took us to his house with all his kids to have a midway lunch. It was so nice, super underrated country.

I liked what he said at the end about the church and mosque putting their entrances facing each other and after prayers everyone comes together in the square so that religion doesnt divide the people. More places should learn from that.

Better for us to help them out, I don’t think little villages like that have a ton of money. Plus, with the differences in cost of living, it’s going to be more expensive for someone in a poorer country to buy something than someone in a richer country. Like for example, buying an iPhone in Albania is about 5% of their yearly salary, compared to about 2% in the US. So it’s better for viewers to crowdfund, or even yes theory themselves could donate one as Thomas suggested, buying a camera would only be a small fraction of their budget.

You are talking about Ferizaj they literally share the same yard. However the same can be seen all over where Albanian of mixed faith live. I am from Prizren the Mosque the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church share the same square too so people can intermingle. Take me for example a Woman from a Muslim family married to a Christian Man and we have countless cases like mine in our families. It's the Albanian culture that makes this possible, we were raised to believe in God however how you worship in him it's something personal between you and God. People think Albania is so religious tolerant due to coming out from Communism but that has nothing to do with communism and it's all about Albanian culture. You see this interfaith exchange wherever you have

The ancient history of Albania as well as the modern history are both fascinating--I wish you'd been to Tirana and gotten to see some of the museums and art spaces and the way the city is being rebuilt and restructured under the new government and social organizations. The sit-in/occupation for preservation of the old theatre in Tirana were happening while we were there, and we helped with some of the support efforts. Your country is so underrated. I've been there 3 years ago. I drove with my friends from shkodra down to Saranda and we saw so many great things. From that restaurant/farm where Thomas has been in this video, the castle in shkodra, a beach that was like this↙️ (the beach was literally a mountain lmao), that blue eye, the castle of berat and the ancient city of gjirocastre (I'm probably spelling that wrong), to the Roman village butrint, all those beautiful cities with that crystal clear water like vlore or Saranda and those lovely people. I've been in like 20 albanian households although I'm pretty introverted. They literally want you to come in and drink a coffee with them, it's so adorable. It was the best journey of my life so far and I'm looking forward to visiting Albania again

Thank you for yet another incredible video. I have a suggestion! If it is at all feasible and safe for you to do so, could you please visit East Turkistan (Xinjiang, China) and do some coverage there on the current genocide and mass cultural assimilation? I am from the region and due to being ethically Uyghur and Kazakh, I haven't been able to return to my homeland in over a decade. We have such a rich and complex history, and our people are some of the most hospitable people you'll ever meet. There is a lack of media coverage despite the huge humanitarian crisis. And it's gutwrenching to see my culture being erased so silently. If it feels aligned with your mission at all, I think it would be a huge honour to have you there. Thank you YesTheory for all that you do 💛
