Traveling on DB's new ICE4 train in First Class | Stuttgart to Cologne

In this trip report video I not only show DB's (Deutsche Bahn) newest high-speed train, the InterCity Express 4 (ICE 4) in first class, but since I have just made this trip recently, you can also see what it is like to travel on a German train during this very challenging time. The ICE 4 is a very interesting train. In spite of being the next-generation successor of the ICE 3, its maximum speed is lower. However, it is more energy efficient.
Overall DB did a good job - I felt safe since the train was clean and there are clear rules of conduct for everyone.

Hi everyone, hope you're all fine. Recently I took an ICE 4 train operated by Deutsche Bahn and in this video you can see what it is like to travel in "the new normal". Enjoy!

Excellent video. In the US people are not really traveling as well and most people are working from home. I miss going in to the office (I live in NYC area) That being said I wish our inter city rail could come close to the quality of that in Europe. I hope to visit one day.

That's interesting to read! I already wondered what the travel situation is like in the US. In Europe travel is possible for the most part, even for recreational purposes (with certain exceptions and travel warnings for specific regions). With regards to the high-speed train services I personally believe it has chances only in specific regions (as the Acela), but then again the plane and the car seem to be the favorite means of transport of Americans. Thanks for watching and your comment!

The German rail system is great. All the ICEs I've traveled on over the years has been top class. Which ICE train has a glass wall to the driver's cabin? I thought that was awesome, very bright. Disappointing about the slower speed and less comfortable seating, but I'm sure it's still above and beyond.

Hello and thanks for watching! Well, personally, I wouldn't call the German railway system great. My relationship with Deutsche Bahn is kind of ambivalent. The ICE is a nice train, but the German high-speed railway has some fundamental problems. First and foremost, the fact Germany never built a dedicated high-speed rail network limits the capabilities of the ICE in a dramatic way. It has to share the tracks with other trains. Secondly, in spite of mandatory EU regulations, there still is no real competition on German railways - because the government basically doesn't implement the regulations in the way they should be implemented. To this day DB is the owner of the trains and the railway infrastructure - and the German government is the owner of DB. Italy is an example of how it can be done and other countries in the EU liberalize their train market, too. Competition brings better prices and better products. Anyway, thanks again for watching, and please don't forget to subscribe to my channel, many more videos are in production!

Regarding the cost overruns... believe me, this is very common everywhere, even Germany. The Berlin airport is another example. I read an article comparing Germany to other countries and efficiency doesn't stand out. The author put the German reputation for efficiency comes down to being rule followers. Speaking of which, this may explain German relative success against the covid epidemic. However, even the Greeks turned into rule followers during this epidemic and have done pretty well until the opening up of restrictions during the summer.

When it comes to public infrastructure projects, Germany has a long history of cost overruns. Also projects take much longer to build than anticipated and sometimes the political decision-making process makes them for years, even in a European context. Right now Austria is building the Brenner Base tunnel, while Germany is not fulfilling its commitment to the TEN. So much of what is said about German efficiency is a stereotype that at least does not apply to the public sector. Concerning the example in this video, Stuttgart 21, it is a very complex project with the rather difficult geology of that region. At this moment it looks like they are making progress and it will be interesting to see whether they will be able to complete it in 2025. Interesting article that you read btw. I believe there is some truth in that, but there are also many other reasons and there are many factors that have an influence on the dynamic of a pandemic - the health system, the social interactions of people etc.. Thanks for watching!

Stuttgart Hbf is so damaged because of the new project that has the first role.
