Trash to treasure: rebuilding a NES Toploader with the OpenTendo and adding RGB!

Ойындар

This week we received another Toploader NES that was destroyed by water damage. Instead of throwing it away, let's build a new Toploader from scratch using Redherring32's new OpenTendo Toploader project! From there, we will add an NESRGB board to make the video and audio quality better than ever!
Check out 1uprestorations.com for more video game console repairs and mods!

    Adding in a nesrgb would make it more expensive indeed. But they could have added a few headers for it so the jumper wires would have been easier. Same thing with the power supply, change it to USB power. Many TV 's don't have RF anymore. So replacing the RF box with a simple composite out could be done. You don't need the nesrgb for that. The voltage mod for expansion audio could also have been integrated. Lots of small points to make it more compatible with the modern day. I do get that they start with recreating the original first, but a plus version would be nice.

    How do I find the specifications for all of the sockets? The bom only lists the sockets for the ppu and cpu (I'm assuming). My board is on the way and I can't wait to start this project!

  • @crunbinklins
    @crunbinklins Жыл бұрын

    EDIT: So what I'm seeing is that at the very least, if we want to convert a frontloader, we'd need power and reset switches, AV-out circuitry, some sort of adapter for the controller ports, sourcing a shell, and a 72-pin edge connector. Is there anything I'm missing? I assume it's easier to get a kit of all replaceable components so you don't have to de-solder and then re-solder those same components to the new board. The chip callouts on the Opentendo board all match everything I see on my own frontloader.

  • @Jkoziol72577
    @Jkoziol7257710 ай бұрын

    Considering to from my understanding they don't make that connector for the front loader anymore the blinking red light wins mod which is out of stock and it has a death grip on your cartridge and if you can find one they're expensive

  • @LIRetroGaming

    You do have to close one jumper on the everdrive to enable expansion audio for the toploader, but otherwise you don’t have to change any of the sound settings

    So, if the RGB is completely formed on the NESRGB such that it would be in spec with straight cables, then won’t capacitors in the SNES cable cause out of spec RGB? Something isn’t adding up. I saw where you acknowledged this with regards to the Super 8’s Genesis 2 output and suggested alternate RGB sources but I haven’t seen anything about doing this with SNES cables.

  • @LIRetroGaming

    @LIRetroGaming

    9 ай бұрын

    That is a very good point and I don’t have a good explanation. But that being said, I did measure RGB voltages on my oscilloscope and they looked the same as my other console that uses the standard 8pin mini din. So I don’t think the RGB is out of spec but I don’t fully understand it either

  • @emmettturner9452

    @emmettturner9452

    9 ай бұрын

    @@LIRetroGaming Thanks. Since mentioning it I noticed that the NESRGB frontloader instructions page links to the “notes about the recommended RGB connector” page while the AV Fami NESRGB instructions do not… and that link is the part that implies the NESRGB is optimized for straight cables that should have no components. The AV Famicom instructions specifically say you must use a PAL GameCube spec SCART cable, which has the 220uF capacitors like NTSC SNES spec. It even says you have to remove the 75Ω resistors from PAL SNES-spec SCART cables, though you could obviously bypass them on the NESRGB board instead. What it does not say is whether or not you need to add 220uF capacitors to the PAL SNES cables, which makes me think it will work either way. So the two sets of instructions seem to contradict each other. The deeper I dig the worse it gets! ;) I checked out some old Voultar NESRGB multi-out videos that predate the QSB and he says you must remove 220uF capacitors from the NESRGB board to use with SNES-spec cables that have 220uF capacitors built in, since connecting the capacitors in series will somehow lower their total capacitance below spec… but those capacitors are nowhere to be found on the current design. It’s frustrating that there are no official instructions or statements on this from him or LaserBear because that would clear it up in an instant. There are no instructions even for the older NESRGB kits that have capacitors you can remove. One possibility I thought of is that the capacitors moved to the mDIN8 breakout board but there is no mention of that anywhere and the guy I’m making cables for never had them (bought his system pre-modded). If they moved then it would make perfect sense because they’d automatically get left out/removed simply by virtue of using the SNES multi-out instead. No mention of that in the NESRGB4.x notes or anywhere else and all the videos I see don’t show or mention an updated mDIN8 board.

    Although I appreciate the effort for making this board, I can suggest here a few improvements for a future revision: - Use the AV Famicom´s PPU layout which will prevent jailbars and give a much clean picture. - Include an on-board circuit for Composite out. - Allow the use of clone/chinese 72-pin connectors that are readily available for cheap so we do not have to desolder the original connector.

  • @LIRetroGaming

    @LIRetroGaming

    Some good news, I have already tested the clone 72 pin connectors and they work with the opentendo. I believe adding composite to the board would be straightforward. Redherring32 is also planning to recreate the AV Famicom as well
