Super smart job tucking your shirt in before approaching a PTO shaft! Even one that isn't engaged. Most people won't even notice that small step, but it is a life saver. I know of more than one neighborhood farmer back in the day that didn't survive that encounter. You and Grant please stay safe.

Why is there a control panel over the PTO? Good thinking on the shirt, I saw that too. Then I immediately went to the placement of that panel. Is that necessary?

For sure. Working with machinery is nothing to get lax about. We had friends that had a family farm in Iowa, Woodbine near Omaha. The dad was seriously injured in an accident involving a conveyer. It's easy to get complacent when you work with the machinery every day. One mistake.

Oh the humanity of it all! That was a bit of humor meant to lighten the burden of the situation. Sometimes we just don't have much control over things in our lives. I was a produce farmer for my last 8 years of grade school. It was very time consuming and relaxing work. Of course back during my teenage years, I easily had the energy to climb Mt. Everest. But like the rest of us, age and illness slowed me down to the point where climbing 5 flights of stairs requires a break.

Might want to watch some of these 3rd world famers that don’t have all the modern day technology! Mexico supplies most of are vegetables, fruit, and other essentials! They definitely can’t afford none of this modern equipment! Not taken nothing away from these guys they do put the time in and work! Sad most of the farms and ranches in America are worked by migrant workers or run by them! It’s unusual to see wealthy Americans run there own farm.

Anyway, the point of this post: Mercedes is/was(?) an owner of Freightliner Trucks; for a few years, Freightliner Trucks had optional Mercedes diesel engines, so another potential source of parts may be your local Freightliner dealer...

-- Glad to see a new breed of farmers. You all are underrated. I can, and have, fixed/rebuilt most all of your equipment, but I can't farm. If that dipstick is factory positioned that way and you're getting blowback, not a great sign. What was the engine temperature when you noticed the problem? To keep it positive, I'd guess a vacuum issue, pump or line, more likely a line. Or even sillier, a crashed cell in a batt. Blown gasket. Start with the easy stuff, eh? And yes, always be safe when getting near a Power Takeoff. Add, don't use rotary power tools with loose gloves.

I really appreciate and enjoy your farm activities. You approach them with such tenacity and no intimidation. Where we are, there are very few pivot irrigation in use. It was always a mystery and fascination to me how they work. All outdoor power equipment and farm machinery and repair of same has been my livelihood. A thought on your stranded spray rig/destroyer (very cool!)... My dad's airplane many years ago suffered a blown oil line and ended its flight sitting in a harvested soybean field....all winter. In the spring a used engine was procured, installed on sight, and it was flown out of said field. Possibly, if the sprayer engine is toast, a rental or demo machine could get your deadline met. Let yours set, harvest the corn, then fix it once the field is clear. It might also be an opportunity to re-power it with something a little more common (Cummins, Perkins). Keep up the good work and the great content.

My mother and I got our hair cut the other day and the shop had local radio station on. We were in there may be 20-30 minutes and the majority of the time the radio station was doing commercials and then traffic report (which in the Phoenix area can be quite long). We might have heard a couple songs the whole time we were there).

Concerning radio stations repeating songs: Most all radio stations follow a programming "format". this "format" determines exactly what music is played and how often it is played. A radio station with an "Oldies" or "Variety" format often have a selection of several hundred (or thousand!) songs to play in a semi-random order. These formats usually have the fewest "repeat" songs. Radio formats that feature on the current popular or 'hit" songs have a very restricted song rotation - often less than a hundred songs! since they can play as many as 18-25 songs an hour, repeats are pretty inevitable... As an example, I was driving on I-70 between Kansas City and Salina today while listening to the radio. I happened on an FM station with the "JACK-FM" format in Topeka, Kansas. Listening to it, I heard Elton John and Dua Lipa's "Cold Heart" twice in a space of less than 3 hours! Yes, I am a former radio DJ...

Laura you hit the head on the nail. A lot of programming of Radio Stations are loop content. Depending upon the format of the Radio Station a popular or a hit song as it climbs the charts does get played a lot. Once it starts loosing chart positions then you are less likely to hear it play. It s been months since I have listened to Radio content. I have a bunch of digital albums so when I do listen to musical content that is what I am listening to.

Oil leaking out of the dip stick hole typically means engine blow-by. Cause of blow-by can be broken ring, possibly crank case ventilation valve if used on a MB diesel engine. If planting on 30" spacing, jury rig a chainsaw on one of Grant's trikes, and destroy a row at a time if other equipment isn't available. Not ideal, but better than nothing. If engine is toast, three options, replace with another MB engine, repower with a Cummins or purchase/lease a new to you sprayer. A local school bus operator purchased 15-20 buses powered by Mercedes Benz. They were priced 10-12,000 less than the other offering, so what company wouldn't want to save $250k? Then the break downs happened, parts availability became an issue, so their older buses that were waiting for new homes were put back into service. Needless to say, they won't be purchasing Mercedes Benz buses again.

Ag engineer for Massey here. Based on what i've seen, which admittedly isn't much but I suspect the engine has dropped a piston ring. This is why the sump was being pressurised and the oil ejected out of the dip stick. This would also explain the loss of compression, so it is likely an engine out job. Will be interested to see the followup and I hope to be wrong.

@@christophermurphy943 Typically failing turbos come with a big cloud of smoke from the exhaust, but she didn't report any smoke so unlikely to be the turbo.

@@SirRodericSpode You are absolutely right, that is a common way for turbos to fail. Tier 4 engines with a DPF would "hide" the smoke, though. I'm guessing this is a Tier 3 engine and, also, I don't think Mercedes uses DPF's on many of their Tier 4 engines. The new piece of info that Laura added on her next video, makes the cause of the failure even more interesting. The service tech, after initial inspection, said that the failure "MAY not be as serious as originally thought". I, originally, assumed the slow cranking when trying to restart was a scored piston/cylinder wall, spun main or rod bearing, or a stroked hydraulic pump. (Normally, a hydraulically locked engine won't crank at all. ) The new info makes it more challenging, which makes this even more fun to guess at the cause!!! Hope everyone else is enjoying this challenge as much as I am.

There’s a poem from a Midwestern poet, Tom Hennen. His book of poems reminds me of my time working on farms in Cordova, Nebraska and Iowa. I think you’d enjoy reading them. The Life of a Day by Tom Hennen Like people or dogs, each day is unique and has its own personality quirks, which can easily be seen if you look closely. But there are so few days as compared to people, not to mention dogs, that it would be surprising if a day were not a hundred times more interesting than most people. Usually they just pass, mostly unnoticed, unless they are wildly nice, such as autumn ones full of red maple trees and hazy sunlight, or if they are grimly awful ones in a winter blizzard that kills the lost traveler and bunches of cattle. For some reason we want to see days pass, even though most of us claim we don’t want to reach our last one for a long time. We examine each day before us with barely a glance and say, no, this isn’t one I’ve been looking for, and wait in a bored sort of way for the next, when, we are convinced, our lives will start for real. Meanwhile, this day is going by perfectly well adjusted, as some days are, with the right amounts of sunlight and shade, and a light breeze perfumed from the mixture of fallen apples, corn stubble, dry oak leaves, and the faint odor of last night’s meandering skunk. -->And...here's some info on Tom's collected poems: www.thomasrsmithpoet.com/2013/02/tom-hennen-celebrating-a-great-neglected-poet.html

I don't know if you have one in your area but when I have problems with my starters and alternators I take them to a local shop that can rebuild them. Often I just take them apart and see what they need, pick up the items and rebuild it myself. I'm guessing you could probably send it out overnight if you know a rebuilder. Just a thought.

It always impresses me how upbeat, positive, and high energy you seem to be despite being a farmer. I was raised on a small dairy farm (Holstein) in Ohio. Only around 40 head max on 200 acres tillable. Mine and my extended family of dairy farmers were never positive and upbeat. I think farm debt has a powerful way of sapping any kind of good energy out of people.

@LauraFarms Any time you have issues with Starters or Alternators, look for a local shop that rebuilds them. My cousin bought an Alternator Shop and we would rebuild starters and alternators and sold them or repaired for a fraction of the cost of a new one. You may have to remove them in the field but it will save you so much money.

You have been raised right, it's nice too see you keep your safety first, maintenance is key to equipment but sometimes it just happens, that's what sits the hard working people apart from the rest, I'd rather be stuck out in the corn then a city any day, keep up the good work, it will get done👍
