Did you know, the line going from Lincoln to Cleethorpes is the UP line, even though it is not going to London. Things you didn't know. A little factoid for you too, if the signal number is an even number, it's the UP ine.

Nice video. Good explanations! Edit: Nice examples too. Like it. Up lines go towards main stations [that can't get to London directly] too as in Manchester Victoria Station, but as you said, mainly to London. On your diagram @ 2:22, your top right 'station' diagram has the Up/Down fast the wrong way round [according to the arrows]. @13:42 You said you don't need a signal on the fast. But it is needed as it is protecting the points/switch going from the fast to the slow lines. As you did was correct.

Thanks for this! Signals are my nightmare even a few years into playing the game! Also, Enhancer for KZread let me flip the video horizontally, so I didn't even have to deal with the lines being the wrong way :)

I'm making part of the West Coast Main Line, with there being 4 stations I wanted express trains to pass straight through. I look to see that it has routed the express trains through the same platforms as the slow stopper trains...

Fantastic, clearly explained. I separate goods and passenger lines on separate double track like you explained here but I don’t do much in the way of passenger branch lines. I have many through platforms for fast passenger trains (up to 10). What is the most effective way to get 5 up and 5 down tracks back to the main line? Also when should you use slip points? Especially around goods yards as it causes lots of issues with the ai routing. Or shouldn’t you use them at all? Many thanks for you clear explanations.

The first question you need to ask is, do you need so many lines? A well signalled 4 track mainline has a huge amount of capacity especially if you use grade separated junctions. Having too many lines can eat into profits as you have to pay to maintain every bit of track you lay.

@@Infrastructure-Nerd I only use 4 track between cities but have a lot of routes going to different end points but do travel through several capitals on the way. Hence the multiple platforms for the routes. How to connect these platforms to the up/down lines is where I need advice if you could.

So, how would you set up a through station for mixed cargo and passenger? I’ve jumped into the deep end, probably running more track than I really need, but I wanted to run a 4 track mainline, and learn how to put together a station. I went with uudd arrangement, and what I’ve done is, starting from the initial building, is the following: Cargo platform-cargo track-slow bypass-passenger platform-passenger track-fast bypass, then mirror for the other direction. It works currently, but I’ve just started playing, so I’m sure you could help me arrange the switching and signals better. I’ll probably post on the steam discussion for visual, but do you have any specific tips? Even if the tip is “Why are you overbuilding everything? Stop!” I’d be glad to hear so I know better.

  • @Infrastructure-Nerd

I don't tend to use mixed passenger and freight stations. I'd be tempted to build the cargo station parallel with the passenger station, then if it was a through station, use flat or grade separated junctions either side of the passenger station leading to/from the UD slow lines to the cargo station

@@Infrastructure-Nerd Great thanks! Should you ever revisit a topic like this I'd love to see how you would go about joining a 4 track with another perpendicular 4 track in a T junction but with minimal track crossovers & also how you'd do two 4 tracks in a cross(?) junction. I mean I can apply lots of what you've shown to tidy up my monstrosities lol but I'd love to see how someone that knows their proverbial onions do it. Cheers great tutorials, best I've seen.
