Transom Outboard Engine Position

www.boatingscene.com.au
Sometimes when your boat is under hard acceleration , it will roll to the side, check whether the outboard is fitted too low/deep on the transom, a simple check of the correct outboard position should help rule out or alleviate some of this rolling.

I .have a 24ft cruiser with a pod .rolls to the right badly sometimes on take of . 200hp mercury .Cavitation plate has been set to the pod height which angles up and is higher than the bottom of hull would be about 100mm higher than bottom of boat. Would this cause this problem .Is fine once you get it on plane .Any thoughts on this welcome.

When comparing the height of the cav plate and keel, is it done with the motor trimmed all the way in or trimmed out?

full down. the bottom of the cav plate should be level with the keel with the engine in full down. then once you get moving and the boat planes - you can trim if you have electric trim.

I made a riser plate for 8hp evinrude to get mine level on my Homemade 10 foot flat bottom took it for a test and cavitation occurred without riser its 3 inches below the boat no cavitation if i trim it one hole it cavitates a little if trimmed all the way cavitates even more is my boat to heavy aroundc1000lbs not sure what else to do

Wait! What??? According to your demonstration it looked perfect, yet you said at the end that the propellor on this boat is "too deep". Are we talking millimetres here because as close as I could see, the bottom edge of the straightedge was exactly in line with the bottom of the transom? I'm trying to adjust the height of a Suzi 8hp 2stroke on a 12' tinny getting swamped by spray above 20kn.

Thanks for posting this video. Would lowering the engine help in reducing bow rise? I have a major issue with bow rise despite having followed the boat manufacturer’s recommendation with engine hp, weight and shaft length.

No, this wont fix bow rise - transom angle will fix that, try a set of wedges between engine & transom

If the drag (boat at speed) is close is close to the surface and the force (propeller) is pushing much lower than the drag, it seems logical it would force the bow up, effectively trying to pass it from underneath. I'm not sure why they can't build an outboard so that the shaft length can be adjustable. Imagine power trim and telescoping, especially with a tiller where even power trim is rare. Imagine a 12-21 or an 18- 27 were the two shaft options. Lowering the transom requires cutting. Fortunately for you, raising the transom height a bit ranges include a piece of hockey stick right up to a deluxe jacking plate.

The straight edge should be parallel to the keel line, and the cav plate about an inch or 25mm above that. The method used in this erroneous video could give any result depending upon the installed height of the outboard.

@@brt-jn7kg If we look at his video, that engine he has as a movie demo is 100% correct, it is according to his straight edge the cavitation plate is about a thumb thickness higher than the keel bottom, creating a 100% correct setting.
