How to change the transmission oil in a M35A2 Deuce and a half. Below I have listed the different wrenches you may run across and the type of oil I'm using along with the capacity. If you enjoyed this video please give me a like and be sure to subscribe for future channel updates as I plan to put up a new video every week or two. Welcome to my channel BC's Deuce and Guns!
-M35A2 Transmission Capacity -10.5 pints with PTO (the Deuce has a winch).
-M35A2 Transmission Capacity - 8.5 pints without PTO (the Deuce does not have a winch).
-Oil used - SAE 30 NON-DETERGENT MOTOR OIL. If you choose to use the military GL-5 oil make sure that it's, "Yellow Metal Safe" or it will corrode the bronze bushings. Also, 40 and 50 SAE NON-DETERGENT MOTOR OIL can also be used (many think 50 is best but I can never find it).
Wrenches you may need 7/16 Socket, 9/16 Hex Bit, 5/8 Open End Wrench, 1/2 Drive Ratchet. Check before you start because there are probably more options out there.

    Great time for a drain plug magnet. Also Might have been a good to mention to drive it around before you drain it, the particles will mostly be suspended in the fluid. As well it's a great idea to run about half a quart of clean oil out of the unit with the plug off, as most of the stuff you want out is heavy and gos to the bottom thus a good way to flush them out. (Pennzoil 2 years) Great videos!

    The military used GL5 but if you read the specs on GL5 regardless of it being yellow metal safe, it is not made for synchronized transmissions. The military also used motor in its 900 series trucks for its Allison transmission rather than Dextron3, it caused the transmissions to shift harshly and downshift horribly. Just a thought for those looking to change fluids. I use GL1 in the tranny and transfer case for better gear oil properties than 30, 40, or 50 wt oil. It is safe to use GL1 and is safe to use In synchronized transmissions. GL5 can be used in the Rockwell axles though. GL5 works great there because of the high pressures.

    Nondetergent straight 40wt or 50wt engine oil or any 80w90 gear oil that says it is yellow metal safe on the bottle, sometimesinstead of yellow metal it'll say protects copper and bronze bushings. When I made this video almost no manufacturer bothered to say if their product was yellow metal safe but have started to do that more now. A lot of people will recommend GL-1 or GL-4 over GL-5 for the best yellow metal protection but I'm not sure if that's still relevant today.

    Bo Rhoden Not only is there a way but it's a pretty good idea. I have extended family who are big dairy farmers and when they lose power they have generators that run off the tractor's PTO and it's enough power to keep the milking machines running. It wouldn't be that hard to attach a PTO shaft onto the transfer case and run a large PTO generator off that. They are not cheap but some of the bigger ones that require over 40 hp can put out some good power numbers and would be enough to run an entire house when the power is used conservatively. Great question!

    I use it on the farm but in reality it's way overkill especially since I've also got a Ford F-250 that could do just about everything I've used the Deuce for. So to answer your question....um....yes...It's a fun historic driver that also hauls things. It is nice to be able to pickup 12' long lumber/pipe from Home Depot /Lowe's and be able to close the tailgate so no flags are required. Also, the Deuce is the only thing I've got that can get up the hill on the farm during bad weather. Good question.

    Sometimes it'll get stuck between gears but the shift lever still moves and it's due to the Sprag front axle but with yours not moving at all it sounds like it's rusted to something. At this point the first step is start taking things from from the top down and investigate. Take of the cover in the cab first and see what you can see.

    I'm trying to get a deuce for my self. I like to know if you have to have a class B or A license to drive a deuce on the road? and what kind of mileage does it get some on told me it only get 5 to 6 MPG but I thought it be closer to 10 or 12 MPG? and by the way you have a great channel all your video are great.

  • @deuceandguns

    @deuceandguns

    9 жыл бұрын

    To the best of my knowledge you can drive a M35A2 with a regular Class D non-commercial license in all states due to it being under 26,000lbs GVWR except for California. In the state of CA you'll need a Class B due to having 3 axles so if you bob the Deuce you'll be fine in CA with a class D. I'm also not sure how strict CA is with this but it's on their DMV website. Regarding the MPG for the Deuce. A stock Deuce will get 10ish MPG if it's running on diesel and the speed is kept at and under 45MPH. If you bump up the speed to the high end of the safe zone (50-52 MPH) you'll drop the MPG to about 5. Thanks for watching!

    Yeah, but they're not anywhere as awesome as a Deuce! IMO. From the videos, the M35A2 sounds to have a real nice exhaust sound even though a bit loud. I also like that you can get them with a mutifuel engine. By using a mix of diesel and used oil, you could save a fair bit on fuel costs. I just think they're pretty cool machines to be honest. If I'm lucky I may get a ride in one in a few weeks time. While up north on holiday I saw one at Murchison House Station, near Kalbarri. It was after a Google and KZread search that I stumbled upon your channel and Deuce videos! We also had the OKA which I believe was designed and built here in WA (Western Australia). They were of limited numbers so cost a bit to buy, IF you can actually find one!

    Great video! I always find time out of my day to watch your videos especially the deuce ones. I remember you changing the oil in the engine of the deuce and I thought to myself the transmission has got to be close to 10 gallons of not more. I'm very surprised it's only a couple gallons. Why would the manufacture use 30 weight oil instead of gear oil? I thought they put gear oil in manual transmissions. Maybe I was wrong. I don't know. It's not an automatic so they wouldn't put automatic transmission fluid in it. Did you change the dif fluid also?

    Most manual transmissions are perfectly happy with some sort of straight motor oil depending on how they were designed. Aussie Bloke! to change diff fluid, just remove the cover off the diff and drain. when done, just fill the diff with proper fluid and you'll know its full when excess fluid starts dripping out. to change transfer case fluid is similar to when changing diff fluid. And remember, this is important, if you have a limited slip diff, make sure you add a limited slip additive.

  • @deuceandguns

    @deuceandguns

    9 жыл бұрын

    Peter Kapica That Diff change technique will work for 90% of the diffs out there but not for the Deuce. The Diffs and the transfer case on the M35s have a drain plugs that must be used. Also, their internals on the diffs are only accessible from the top after removing the drive shafts due to them being top loaders. The M35s don't have stock limited slip but yes always take care of you limited slip diff by using the correct fluid and never use a mini spare on the rear because both will result in burning out the clutches. Thanks for watching.

    I can't remember if I mention it in this video or another one but while non-detergent 30 straight wt works I think 40 wt would be a better choice if you're also going to be driving in hot summers. It works for both the transmission and transfer case but not the diffs. I recommend standard 80w-90 for the diffs.

    Just noticed something after watching this vid about 100 times,..... You said they used GL1 and then GL5 (improved) in the gearbox,, diffs and transfer case, I can understand that they would need to use as few different consumables as possible and why. So since a 30-50W non detergent oil was meant to be used in the spicer gearbox, dose that also mean you can use that same oil in the transfer case and diffs as well? Aussie.

  • @deuceandguns

    @deuceandguns

    9 жыл бұрын

    I've been told that 30-50W can be used in the transfer case but I've also heard that 80w90 gear oil is best so I'm still researching before I change it and make a video. The diffs will need something better suited to the pressure so regular diff oil (80w90) but I'm still researching exactly what's best before putting it on video.

    There are bobbed deuces where the rear axle is removed making it a 4x4. I've heard that's good for about 3mpg. I also know a dude who removed the front drive shaft so the engine doesn't have to spin the front end and that was also good for a few mpg.

  • @MrJlhhagood2

    So just removing the drive shaft between the second and third axle? I've personally never heard of that but it'd probably do some good as long as the extra traction wasn't needed. If it were simply a hwy hauler then you'd probably get an extra 3 mpg or more by removing the drive to the front and third axle and only driving the second axle.

  • @deuceandguns

    If you're talking about the switch I flip at about 6:00 then that's the front wheel drive lever which uses air pressure to engage the front wheel drive. Early models had an automatic sprag gear that engaged the front when the rears slipped but due to some issues with the sprag system later models were manually switched on and off.

    Yep. You'd have to take the viscosity into consideration so the pumps aren't over stressed but an easy work around is to simply cut it 1:1 with diesel and you're golden. Strictly theoretically speaking you could run the thing on uncut moonshine to get out of Dodge with the understanding that it may be the last time the truck ever starts.

    Will a Deuce take a shift like this? Probably. Will this cause accelerated wear and possibly break something? Yes. If you're concerned about shifting quickly don't buy a Deuce. If you're concerned about vehicle speed don't buy a Deuce. It’s been over 4 yrs now since the video. Have there been any transmission problems? And about how many miles would you say you have on ‘er since the fluid change? Reason for my questions are because I just purchased a deuce and all the research of what type of oil to use is killin’ me! GL1, GL5, 80w90, 50wt engine oil..... driving me crazy! Since you have time and miles on yours, I’d like to know how things are going. Thanks!

    I don't put a ton of road miles on mine but it's been fine. If you dive too deep down the rabbit hole on this oil thing it will make your head spin but there is a lot of overlap when it comes to these lubes. 30wt straight non-detergent works for me but I've been told it can cause shifting issues in hot weather after lots of hwy driving. Any of those you listed above will work as long as it's safe for the yellow metal in the transmission (GL5, 80w90 may be an issue) and some will shift better than others. For better summer driving and protection I've been thinking about changing to 40wt straight non-detergent but due to having newer trucks at my disposal I rarely drive it that much when it's hot out.

    Where did you pick up your deuce? I'm currently in PA and can't find one for under $8,000 in decent shape with a winch. And if I'm buying one it needs to have a winch for with I plan on doing with it. I've found a couple without a winch for $4,500 here and I'd say that's a fair deal, but like I said I want a winch.

    Interesting that you're in PA because that's where I ended up buying mine and driving it back down to Tennessee. That trip was over 600 miles in a new to me truck! Try extending your search out and cruising the classifieds on EBAY and steelsoldiers. Unfortunately, the super cheap deuces from government auctions have all but dried up so the surplus that was there has shrunk. I bought my Deuce when there were still occasional internet posts like this, "Guys, I stupidly put $500 on a deuce at the gov auction and actually won the thing! What do I do?" Everyone around me is at $7k right now for examples ranging from rusted out to $13k for near fully restored. Good luck

It looks like the 5 ton is the new Deuce but unfortunately in PA I'd need to get a CDL to drive it. Maybe I'll just save up until I move back to MI where you can drive personal trucks without a CDL and buy a 5 ton. They do have a cummins which I'm much more familiar with. I'm so used to working on modern vehicles with sealing washers on the drain plugs that it totally slipped my mind that a sealant may be needed for this. It really only occurred to me while editing this video but I've put roughly 3 hours on the truck after this change and not seen any drips yet...but time will tell. I will say that there was no sign of any sealant on the plug when I removed it and no mention of it in the technical manuals talking about the trans fluid change so I may be OK.

    Do you or does anyone know if your low air pressure switch leaks air through a hole on the right side of it? The low air pressure switch is mounted to the firewall above the steering shaft. If you follow the wire that plugs into the buzzer it will connect into the low air pressure switch that I am speaking of. I'm wondering if yours has a plug in the hole to prevent air from coming out of it or if there's a hole in yours and there's possibly a diaphragm that blocks the hole from inside the switch or something to that effect that broke on mine. If there is a screw or plug in that small hole on the right side of the low air pressure switch then that would tell me I can plug mine. I don't want to have to replace the switch if I don't need to.
