    食洗器家族 (식세기가족) = Food (食) Washing (洗) Utensils (器) Set (家族). In other words, they are a set of utensils used for washing food, such as whole fruits and vegetables.

    Thank you for tracing the origin of this term. It is so funny that it originates from Korean, and then translated into Chinese and then to English!! I always love to know the fun facts of phrases transmitted across cultures!!

    @@dr.gaosclassroom No, I do not know the origin of that Chinese expression. I just guessed at its meaning. And the reason I used Korean pronunciations for the characters is because I do not speak Chinese. I can speak English and Korean, but I am trying to teach myself Chinese vocabulary and grammar so that I can at least read written Chinese using Korean pronunciations. I know that might sound kind of silly and useless, but trying to also learn to speak Chinese would just slow me down. :) Even though I cannot speak Chinese, I still enjoy learning to read it, and your videos are helping me to do that. Thank you.

    Thank you for correcting my misinterpretation of your comments. The phrase does sound like either Japanese or Korean.食器洗 or 食洗機 is a Japanese term for dish washer. I am very glad you are watching my videos and they are of some help for you!!

    Does anyone know of a good translation of "the records of the grand historian", "xunzi", "mencius" and "the tso chuan"? Thank you

    "the records of the grand historian" is probably 史记, "xunzi" refers to the philosopher 荀子, "mencius" 孟子 and "the tso chuan" 左传. I hope this is helpful. I have made a few videos about Chinese philosophy you might be interested. Here is one about Confucius: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3uTyNprprHXdso.html

    I think with the 食洗器家族 the sack translation comes from 洗成 to sack a city. My guess is the item is some kind of scrubber for pots and pans. Although 食洗器 is often just used to mean a dishwasher machine.

    At around the 3:30 minute mark, that's more Crisps than Chips/Fries. It's like crisps glazed with egg yolk type of street food I assume.

    We call crisps “chips” here in America. Although yeah i realize he said fries, fries are 薯條, so yeah should have been chips/crisps.

    Not that long ago software used for translating Chinese into English was very odd. It used libraries of phrases and words, it was very hard to use, and it was rather expensive. At the same time, Google Translate was terrible. Nowadays, Google Translate does a pretty good job, and I’ll bet once AI really gets going you’ll never see embarrassing and funny signs like these.

  • @discursion
    @discursion5 ай бұрын

    Pretty sure the signs are human-translated or have been translated with very poorly designed machine translation. Google Translate would do a good job with those simple expressions (and it's not blocked in China!).
