For those who have studied French or Italian, this concept should be very easy to understand because a similar rule applies in those languages (it also once applied in English, which is why you will sometimes hear "he is gone" for "he has gone").

This was a really important concept for me to understand where I am at right now on my learning German journey. Especially with regards to case and inflection. Thank you so much for all your work online and going in for detail here, really helps understand it holistically.

Love this explanation, as fur mich, it cleared up several questions I've had about past tense and the use of sein vs haben. Trying to break thru to A2 and only today stumbled upon your channel. Danke Herr Antrim, du bist ein Genie!

Wow, I am pretty confused.I think maybe lots of simple examples might help. I am learning vocabulary, but the grammar escapes me. Because of that, I understand what I read, but I can't compose correct sentences.

Thank you so much for this helpful video, I feel like I finally have an understanding of the logic behind haben and sein! It got me thinking though.. there are many verbs that use "haben" regardless of whether they take a direct object. For example: ich habe geschlafen, geschrieben, getanzt Are these exceptions or is there an explanation for this?

I am under the impression that "Ich bin ein Mann" and "Ein Mann bin ich" (I am a man), and "Der Mann ist mir" and "Mir ist der Mann" (The man is me) works fine in German and word order is flexible depending on intent.

to snow - schneien (vi) seems it should be, "es ist geschneit" but it isn't. is this simply an exception to the rule? i know they exist... thanks!

schneien is an intransitive verb, meaning it can't take a direct object, but precipitation in all of its forms uses haben in Perfekt. Es hat geschneit. Es hat geregnet. And so on.

  • @morlewen7218

As Herr Antrim said schneien (indicates no movemant or status change) uses haben in Perfekt. But there is also the verb einschneien (to snow in). That verb uses sein in Perfekt as the verb indicates a change in status (no snow versus coverd with snow) and it is used in an intransitive way.

Transitive. It is only that there is an object. For example "helfen" uses only a dative object. It is also transitive.
