Transitioning To College with a Disability

College can be a challenging undertaking. Unfortunately, some students believe their disability is an insurmountable obstacle that will lessen their odds of achieving success at the college or university level. Some even feel their disability will detract from the overall collegiate experience. The Disability Services Office at NC State University has produced an informational DVD to put common misconceptions like those to rest. The five minute closed captioned video features two students with learning disabilities It explains how accommodations can be different in college compared to what students have in high school. It describes how one discloses a disability at the college level including the importance of knowing what the disability is, how it impacts the student, and what accommodations have worked well in the past. Additionally it stresses the importance of long term planning, online searching, and on campus visits. Preparing students with disabilities for postsecondary education is a significant endeavor. We produced this video to aid you with that process.

I have been having learning disabilities since I was 8 years old. I grew up in special education classes. I enrolled into college when I was 19. I failed numerous times but I never gave up. This year I graduated and now have a bachelors degree in business. It took me 10 long years finish college. Never ever doubt yourself regardless how hard you struggle and how many times you failed.. ALWAYS ask for help

Gerardo Coria this is the reason why I didn’t go to college because of my learning disability and believe it or not the reason why I keep on failing in life is because my teachers were giving me second grade reading level I have been doing this shit ever since six grade this is why no college was that sent me this is why I got a email by the community college telling me we didn’t approve your application and plus I was told I wasn’t legible to go to college I had teachers telling me that I was disabled I had teachers made fun of me this is the reason why I didn’t go to college because they didn’t help me enough and I blame them everything was going on in my life I mean I’m not trying to be rude or anything but how much money did they pay the students to do this video

I grew up with a Epilepsy, and the medications I was on reduced my seizures, but it messed up my ability to remember things. I got put in Special Ed. until students my age graduated Grade 12. Music was my Strength, but the Colleges and Universities refused to accept People with Disabilities, informing me... "The Safety of Thousands in More Important than the Pleasures of Just One."

Did you try college because your story sounds like mine. Epilepsy (hopefully having them in less dangerous situations sometimes than me) loved music (I was in band 7 years because the band director pulled some strings (percussion.) I am just starting (well almost ending my first semester of college) if you gave up, I promise you even if I would not remember you my degree will be yours in heart as well. :)

Yes, I tried going to College, but they wouldn't let me into the programs I wanted to take. Instead, they had a program for People with Disabilities, and the Course Number was 000.1. Instead of taking courses to eventually find a job, they had a program called Basic Employment Readiness Training, where they match your skills with employers looking for workers in certain areas. The course was 10 months, and since it was through a College, I had to pay for it ($50 per month = $500). Everywhere they sent me, I got a report saying I worked really well, but when asked if they would hire me, the stores said No (for Liability Reasons), but they would gladly take me back as a Volunteer. Then if I had a Seizure on the Job, the company could not be held responsible, because it was my choice to be a Volunteer. This continued through the entire 10 months where companies wanted to get the work done without having to pay for it. At the end of the program, I was classed Unemployable due to the chance that I might have a seizure while on duty. They suggested I sign up for the program again, and while it probably won't lead me to a job, at least it'll help me to learn new things with different job sites. I refused.

One minute I'm doing something, an d the next thing I know, I'm waking up on the ground with people telling me not to move as an Ambulance is on the way. I took a Job Training Progrm, where I was placed in lots of stores and they loved my work, but they also witnessed me having Seizures. At the end of the month, they'd fill out a report of my performance, then send it in. Over and over, companies were asked if they would hire me, they all said NO for Liability Reasons. Yet some of them tried to be nice, by saying I'm welcome to "come help out" as a Volunteer. Because of this, the Canadian Government has classed me "Unemployable" for the Public's Safety. College is very tough its even tougher when you have a disability. I just don't get why they don't have special ed in collage its not fair and it throws thoughs with disabilities under the bus. They should have a program with two professors . For the course of those who have 504 and IEPs I attend Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing New Jersey I suggested the idea and they agreed that it would be a good one but they said because of the budget that they weren't going to be able to do it. Hopefully one day the government will force them to it will make things a heck of a lot easier for myself and others who have disabilities you have things at a slower pace with more attention

Rebecca Sitton I did I do have a 504 but I was suggesting to them to have a program with two professors for students with 504s iep's that way you can be at a slower pace with more attention I believe that if we had two professors students with disabilities could get the extra help as opposed to having one professor with a rapid speed with not too much attention they agreed that the idea was good but they said due to budget reasons they weren't going to be able to have that program with two professors and the classroom for people with disabilities that have iep's and 504s

Dag man I'm very sorry to hear that you should file a law suit on them because that's discrimination. The problem i had in school was ADD which is an attention problem. No matter what your level of education is they should have course to teach you based on wear your at.I had some teachers that didn't care and would just push me through. Most of my teachers where descent they would teach me just enough to pass and remember the martial. I started off in regular classes like the normal kids, but i started acting up. they labeled me as emotional disturbed. K-6. Then from 7-12 i just had a few problems with paying attention, and staying organized and keeping up the paste. Overall i was a smart kid i even I got merit roll and honor roll. but do to day dreaming i wasn't able to be in a regular class with the normal kids. It bother me for years i didn't feel normal, but when i realized that their where other kids just like me i didn't feel so bad about myself overall. But you should definitely report the school for rejecting you, because that is highly unfair to you. Hope everything works out cheers! keep your head up and if it doesn't workout try to find a school that better suites your needs. their are some schools out their that are made for people like you and I that have disabillites

+DifferentIsBeauty Everyone has the ability to do well. I would suggest if school gives you anxiety to consider a private school for students with disabilities like ADHD, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. I know that it would help you a lot because there are several children there with the same struggles. If you are concerned about the money it may cost, consider applying for scholarship. here is the link to find a school in your area: dyslexiahelp.umich.edu/answers/independent-schools These schools will also help you get into any college you wish to attend. You can do it!

If you're referring to college or universities, they provide you a separate room and time to do your exams. The time given to you also depends on your disabilities and your needs. I was an exam proctor for a while and I know students enjoyed being able to take their time and being in a separate and quiet space to complete their work. It won't take all your testing anxiety away but it might help.

I am special needs and I donot think there is a college I can get a high enough loan for and still succeed in. Aspergers GED and panic attacks. only time I've ever succeed in school was with an in class tutor but I was honor roll in 6th grade and then never again..... it fills me with regret and pain and sadness that my educational performance just fell off like a cliff when they took the tutor away.
