Just got my hands on a Spur xl hands down best bike i have ever owned and i have owned many of the top bikes i dont tjink there is another bike in its class that can compete with the spur good job wit this one Transition you nailed this one.

Rich Drew Sweet! I am really curious to hear about the difference. I am 5’9 and am on a Large Ibis HD5 at the moment and always wondered what a Med would have felt like. Been checking out the Transition and the Ripley and thinking about going with a Med to get that poppy fast feel on my local trails. Looking forward to your opinion. Oh and I did a 12 foot drop after watching the 2 “how to drop” Videos (like 4 times each) so big thanks for that solid content as well.

Couldn't agree more with your thoughts on the RS suspension. Super supple off the top and very progressive. Couple that with the compliant frame and that usual harsh feedback you normally get with short travel bikes telling your brain to slow down is absent :)

Those trails though, so perfectly man machined ... sick...we don't have anything like that around here! I am so I'm love with my 2020 Occam but damn this Spur, the more reviews I see the more I am eyeing that 5 lb lighter difference and XC speed. Great writing and energy is always rich,. ty!

Great review! I am also 5.10 and would love to hear your thoughts on the medium vs large. Currently on a large Intense Primer MK1 with 453mm reach and 70mm stem and would prefer not to have a too long wheelbase. I fear the large will be to long for my kind of riding - tight singletrack with lots of ups and downs, flowtrails and switchback climbing

@@paulfraley7990 190 and no tokens. Loving the xo1 build, I’d guess you might need a token bit the bike should be more than capable. I’m still faster down on my 160 travel bike but the spur has way more versatility.

Really like your review style. Mix of riding highlights with talking through what you experienced. I can look up specs before or after on my own. I just want to know how it feels. Stable, shaky, slow, fast...

Hey Greg! Glad the style resonates my man. My thought is this: If what I'm experiencing helps you make an informed decision, then I've done what I can do! The hope is that I can paint a clear picture of who I am as a rider and try to capture what the bike did for me. I LOVE riding bikes and it's pretty hard to find a "bad" bike above 3K, it's just a matter of whether or not it meshes with you as a rider.

the sizing is on the small side, i sat on a sentinel med. 27.5 wanted it so much after that.

Great review! That bike caught my eye when they launched it and I also felt it was a great looking bike, in a segment I am newly very interested in (thanks to the Trail 429 Enduro). I hope your able to get on a large as I would love to know what you find you like better in regard to the frame size. Hi five to TurtleBoss for me!

It's right up your alley dude!! I think you'd dig it, especially with a macho wheelset and some Cushcore. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this makes it's way up the ladder to Transition and they shoot a Large my way.

Rich, before watching this video about the Transition Spur I watched your video of the Revel Rascal. I realize the bikes have different front/rear travel but how would compare them? Seems you really liked both. Thank you for the excellent videos.

I put a SID Ultimate on my Spot Ryve and it is like a Pike-lite. Crazy good fork so far.

I've had mine two weeks, I absolutely love it. Got a Large, I'm 5'10 and its great, had a Medium YT Capra, but feels brilliant as a large, smooths the trail and doesn't feel like it is short travel. Great review thanks

I'm thinking about going with a large as well, but I'm only 5'9". Still liking your large Spur? Also, I have been considering the YT Izzo. It's either the Izzo or Spur at this point for me. I know the Izzo is completely different than the Capra, but overall, what are your thoughts between YT and Transition? Thanks in advance.

@@trey6272 I love it still. A great bike all round. The length just makes it planted and it climbs very well. Its a bit unfair comparing the Capra to the Spur, but imo the Transition is the better bike for me, the Capra was a beast, but I really don't do massive downhills so was always overbiked. The buying process was good with YT, delivery was reasonable but I bought during the early clamour for the Capra. Managed to get it in about 4 weeks to the UK. Expensive for YT spares though and a lack of importer makes returns a claims a ball ache ( i have a few mates that also had em) though If you can get the Transition then I'd say Go for it

Great demo for me personally because I ride a TR Scout in OZ a couple times a week. Was SUPER curious about the Spur and imagined that It'd absolutely rip these trails. I'm mid-fifties and still riding most of the blacks-dbl blacks well but man....losing 6 1/2lbs of bike weight sounds damn good 👍

Glad you dig it! I think this bike would do really well on nearly everything we have here. I think Cushcore would be in order with the wheel/tire setup on this bike, or you could get something carbon that's a bit wider and maybe run a little chunkier tire. This thing was eerily light for my taste, I'd be ok adding a pound or so in wheel/tire.

Would like to hear your thoughts mate with beefier tyres! Nothing slows a bike like grippy rubber.

Really looking forward to this one .... having ridden for Titus in 2005, I was quick to pivot to Pivot. My Mach429sl is amazing, but it’s time to upgrade... this baby is top 2 or 3....

i'm on the mach429 trail and am thinking about getting a spur as well. Sizing, since our circa-2015 mach429 frames were designed, have gone way way longer on the reach measurements and wheelbase, effectively making the bikes way bigger and making sizing more of a puzzle than it used to be. I'm 6' and currently on a large mach429, but getting a medium Spur due to the reach still being 30mm more than my pivot, and the wheelbase on the M spur is also 40mm longer than my pivot. I ended up with a 2020 Izzo - changed some things on it that make a big difference. Got rid of lock-out and went with a new float dps. Changed the rebound to a little lighter stack so it has a little quicker flow. This gives it a bit ‘lighter’ feel to the rebound. Gives it some more…. Immediacy of the dampening. I ride a Large and it’s perfect. Heading to bentonville next weekend for some more fun.

Wish they made an aluminum version. Although maybe it would be tough keep many of the standout characteristics.

Clint Gibbs has a new Spur and so far he loves it. I have been thinking of a shorter travel and lighter bike as i really dont use/need what's available with the Instinct BC all the time so it would be nice to have something like that in addition to the BC. I was wondering if you have ridden the 2021 Element Carbon 90 for a comparison? Last time i looked Transition lists the M Spur with the XO build as sold out and the dealer i bought my BC from in Idaho is looking to see when an Element will be available, significant price difference but he will give me a price close to the Spur-- You sure have some great skills BTW

Hey Patrick! This one was legit! I fully expected some decent deflection (twisting) when I loaded it up hard and I didn't notice it once. Granted, I didn't drop the hammer too hard since it's my buddies bike, but I drove it in deep a few times. It worked a bit better, in my opinion, than the 140mm 34 on the Django. It's just way more plush initially and ramps up REALLY well! I was running 90psi because I figured i'd be giving it more than it could handle and I barely bottomed it.

Best review on the Spur so far Rich!!! You ride it the way I would like to ride it, party in the woods... I'm 5'11 and thinking about getting one but I don't know which size to pick. Transition pretty please give Rich a size Large so he can tell the difference?

Hey Aaron! I wouldn't say "completely" different category. The Trail is unique because it's a fairly heavy bike for only being 120mm rear and it's also pretty capable in my opinion. However, the Spur feels more capable to me on both ends of the spectrum: It feels much lighter and pedals just as well, but it feels a tad bit more confidence inspiring from a trail riding perspective. I've just started riding the Large and it feels killer!!

Rich Drew will you post a video about how the large feels vs the medium. I am same height as you but ride more narrow trails and flow trails with lots of small ups and downs and find it difficult which size to go for

Rich most of us normal riders don't have that kind of trails like perfect groomed and well made

Pepe Anza Thats one of the benefits of living here 😉. I assume you’re comment relates to the review on the bike. Not everything in this video was perfectly groomed and the bike performed very well. At the end of the day, groomed or not, I think I did things on this bike that most “normal riders” wouldn’t. That says a lot about the bikes capabilities.

OK, you did a test on the Specialized Epic Evo a couple of months ago. How would you compare the two bikes?

Hey Roger! Very different bikes in my opinion. The EVO is very much a super capable XC bike that can be ridden much “bigger” than the travel would have you believe. I added a Ground Control GRID rear tire and some XC Cushcore and this bike has been a blast! The Spur is much more of a “trail lite” bike than the EVO is. If you were never an XC rider/racer and are looking for a light, capable, and super fun bike then the EVO is the choice. I hope that makes sense Roger. They are both awesome bikes and I think they overlap a bit, but not apples to apples.

What's your wingspan? I am 5'10" tall with a 5'10" wingspan (31" inseam) and was able to reserve a L at my LBS. But wondering if I should get the M instead. I am currently riding a Medium 2020 SC Blur TR.

Man, I really want this! infact the alternatives are Trek top fuel and YT Izzo uncaged, both are expensive as well with the YT given you way more value, but damn if I prefer to have the Spur, so damn hard to get a hold of though :(

Pumped to have you as a subscriber Leeman! 1) I'm 5'10. I'm currently riding a large and it's AMAZING!! 2) My company owns quite a few bikes. I'm currently switching between the Fezzari Delano Peak in L, the Levo and Levo SL in L, the Epic EVO in L, and the Spur in L 3) I actually raced a 27.5 Pivot Mach 5.5 in 3 Big Mountain Enduro races last year and did very well. I'm a big fan of the 2.6 setup on 27.5. The fun factor is incredible and I won't rule out getting back on a 27.5 at some point. 4) The Spur handles better than the SB, but they are different bikes. The high end capability of the SB is far superior for most riders. I LOVE the Spur because I can stretch the 120mm of travel VERY far. I wouldn't expect everyone to be able to do that. As far as a comparison for for here in northwest AR, I'd choose the Spur all day. 5) Actually have not, might be time. A new Thai place just opened here in the Ville, I'll report back soon.

Sounds weird, I know, but I will paypal you the cost of dinner if you don't love it! The actual Thai spelling is Gaeng Kiew Wan Guy - Guy being chicken. It's green curry & coconut chicken and if done right, or even close, it's worth return trip after return trip. @@RU2AIM that sounds really good, i'll give it a try soon! As for the SB, I LOVED my 2019 and would take one back in a heartbeat. It was a fantastic bike and did everything extremely well. It's a tough call, I think it's a factor of how "snappy" do you want the handling. The SB with 27.5 x 2.8s was something I really enjoyed, but it's not incredibly snappy. It inspires some amazing confidence though. It would be great if you could ride the 5.5 setup on 2.6s to see what you think. Can't go wrong either way in my opinion

Your thoughts on the Spur vs..Trail 429 would be appreciated?

Hmmm, gonna be an interesting answer. I’d choose the Spur hands down compared to the standard Trail 429. It’s significantly lighter but feels just as capable. The Fox 34 hold the Trail back for me, it just deflects too much for how I ride it. I get NONE of that with the SID on the Spur. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Spur to the Enduro Spec Trail though. That being said, I’d think I’d still prefer the Spur with a Pike and some beefier tires over the Enduro Trail. Hope that makes sense.

@@bfranco1519 GREAT question and one I can’t answer in this specific situation. The Trail 429 frame is certainly burly and I’d imagine that’ll give it some solid durability. I haven’t heard of any issues with the Spur, but I haven’t dug into it either. Do some due diligence and I’m sure you can find out if there are people that are seeing issues with frame stress on them.

You borrowing a bike from a buddy really humanizes this channel. I thought Transition would be sending this directly to your house.

Haha!! I wish they'd send one to my house. Hopefully soon enough. It's a strange space this "KZread world." Specialized, Giant, Fezzari, and Devinci have supplied bikes, but some other manufacturers won't even return emails. I guess some see value in a guy like me making this content and others may not. I'm certainly not above borrowing a bike when need be and I'm just happy I could get my hands on one. I REALLY wanted to get on this bike because it fits squarely into a genre that I'm a massive fan of AND i've literally had more people ask about this bike than any other in recent memory. Hope my feedback was valuable

Any chance you got to hit some down hill chunk / rocks? A bit more suspension that the Revel Ranger and SB115 but curious how it handles rougher terrain.

Hey there! You literally saw everything I hit in the video. I was on a tight time window and didn't have the usual production crew, so this was the best I could do. I can certainly say I didn't hit anything I'd categorize as "chunky" for any sustained amount of time. That stuff exists here and I'd LOVE to hit it, I just need to get a media/test bike from Transition. I'd assume it would do pretty well on terrain that was decently chunky. At the end of the day, it's still a 120mm bike and I think there certainly are limits. Now, with some burly wheels and Cushcore, I'm confident I could ride some trails that would be empirically thought of as "gnarly!"

@@richdrewtherideseries Your killin me. So I've had a med on order forever. I just paid for it since it finally came in. But I was able to get on a friends large and on a med today. I'm the same height as you. I still don't know. But I could ride either one. The Lg felt long and more chopper like. But the reach felt fine. The md does feel a little short to the bars and very nimble. I guess I'll find out once I set it up to my liking. Also I'm coming off a Pivot 429 that is like 8 years old.

I would like you to ride the Revel Ranger and compare.. All i have seen/read says they can go head to head..

@@richdrewtherideseries I'm 5'9" w/32" inseam, and ended up going with a medium based on Transition's recommendation. Watching your review helped seal the deal for me. Transition should definitely send you a bike!

I'm 5' 9.5" with a 31" inseam and went with the medium Spur, as well. So far, it seems to fit just about perfect for my style of riding, but I'm definitely not pointing it straight down anything really gnarly. All I know is that it climbs like a billy goat compared to my trail bike, and it REALLY gets up to speed quickly. Almost too fast sometimes! It's also super easy to pop it off of every small lip and rock on the trail -- almost like riding a bmx bike in the woods. I moved the seat back as far as it would go on its rails, and I may tweak the cockpit a little in the future (stem, rise, etc), but it's already damn near close to perfect for me.

@@thelmaviaduct - yes, I do. In hindsight, I should have bought the large and installed a shorter stem. In fact, I'm currently trying to find someone with a Large frame who wants to swap for my medium. It's not terrible riding the medium, but definitely not optimal.

Looks amazing and obviously you have the skill to handle a bike that might be under-biked for the knar. I like that Transition has matched a 120/120 setup and hope others follow. I think 120 to 130 is the sweet spot for trail bikes and depending on the build you could go wider rims fatter tires for some trails or narrow rims and slimmer tires for climbing rockets to try and PR climbs and perhaps a XC or 24hour race

Thanks dude! I think this bike certainly lives up to it's billing. You hit the nail on the head with the range this bike is capable of with a simple wheel swap. It felt as on kill, if not more, than any of my XC race bikes.

The SiD didn't survive 250km in this bike. Lotsa issues from people with this fork. Now switched to a 2023 Pike Ultimate >Brutal! Gets you so much more out of this machine, this rig replaced my Megatower in Summer/Autumn 2022!

Hey Justin! They are two VERY different bikes! For a 120mm bike, I was blown away. I certainly wouldn't expect it to handle some of the bigger stuff I've thrown at the Delano, but the Delano doesn't pedal anywhere near as well as this thing.

Man can you ride. How does the Spur compare to the Revel Rascal/Norco Optic?

Thanks David! Man, I’d LOVE to tell you how it compares to those two bikes 🤷🏻‍♂️. I spent a bit of time on the Rascal and it was pretty cool. It’s not as snappy as the Spur, but handled the chunkier stuff a bit better, as you’d expect. I love the look of the Optic and I’d really like to get some time on one.

What height are you man?

I’m 5’10. The Large is a longer bike, but it just feels better to me than the medium

Bentonville, Arkansas. It's essentially a mountain biking resort town in the Boston Mountains of Arkansas. They have pro builders adding new trails and jump lines almost every day -- including more than $70 million dollars donated by the Walton family just to build trails. There are also more than 100 miles of paved trail if you're into that sorta thing. It's a legit cycling destination with a few decent breweries, as well.
