This group of whales is known as the T69s, with the lone male in the group making the spectacular kill on the harbour seal. His name is T69C, and he was born in 1995.

Just for reference a seal looks small but still weighs up to 168kg or about 2 average human adults. They don't attack us in the wild but still interesting to think about how far they could fling us in the air if they wanted to. Orcas really are the apex predators of the sea.

@Matthew I did the math. It's 24.83m which puts it just shy of 95'. If the seal is on the lighter average weight side with 150lb he hit the water with 750.9 Newtons of force. 1,501.78 N if it's closer to the 300lb average.

Honestly, I expected a clickbait title, and to see the seal go maybe 10-15 feet in the air, but that seal went so high, so fast, that I had to look again to catch it. Nice to see a video that exceeds expectations. PS, if you listen carefully, you can hear the orca tell the seal, "Don't come back down without a bird. I'm feeling like eating seagull tonight, and don't worry, I'll get you high enough".

Using physics, we can calculate how high the seal actually went. If the seal spent 4.30 seconds in flight (the average following 6 experimental timings), then it suggests that it took 2.15 seconds for it to fall back into the water. Assuming that air resistance is not a factor, (1/2)(9.81)(2.15)^2 = 22.67 meters = 74 feet 5 inches

For a few seconds the seal must've thought he evolved into a winged creature.
Orcas are nuts they are like a combo of dolphins whales and sharks.
Update on this video- The seal was recently spotted circling our atmosphere.

They should be in the wild, Orcas have killed themselves due to depression, that seal was just selected as this Orca’s meal, poor seal tho.

I get the feeling most of the seals this happens to aren't even conscious while in the air. My guess is the force of the tail hitting them and sending them into orbit would bash around there brain enough to knock them out

I've seen circus performers catapulted way up in the air (though admittedly, not that high). Animals are tough. Maybe the seal survived.

@@tannerannichiarico7255 Dead or dying. It likely wasn't the first tail hit, just the first one that sent it skyward. They do it to immobilise their prey to avoid injury, similar to house cats.
