Transformative Experiences: A Conversation with L.A. Paul (Episode

Ғылым және технология

Sam Harris speaks with L.A. Paul about the nature of transformative experiences. They discuss how certain experiences change the self, the nature of regret, changing belief systems, conspiracy thinking, empathy, doing good in the world, our relationship to our future selves, changing our values, the nature of possibility, the ethics of punishment, moral luck, the moral landscape, consequentialism, and other topics.
L.A. Paul is the Millstone Family Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Cognitive Science at Yale University and leads the Self and Society Initiative for Yale’s Wu Tsai Institute. Her research explores questions about the nature of the self and decision-making, and the metaphysics and cognitive science of time, cause, and experience. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Humanities Center, and the Australian National University. She is also the author of three books, including Transformative Experience, and Causation: A User’s Guide, which was awarded the American Philosophical Association Sanders Book Prize.

Listening to the first part of this conversation reminded me of the difference between the description of an event as an intellectual concept and the actual full experience itself. Some people that work almost entirely in the former may have trouble with this distinction.

Sam, would love to hear a convo between you and Marianne Williamson. There's a lot of common ground between you two - her advocating for mindfulness in schools (which Anika does), and while you may use different words, fundamentally you share the same spiritual outlook (I know you're not a fan of that word). I'd love to hear your thoughts on her. She's actually a lovely woman (with 3 million twitter followers, so it may bring you a few newbies). I'd also love to hear you express any disagreements you may have with her, because unlike most people, I feel you interview in good faith, and I would like to hear you both go deep into certain issues. Your long-form interview style is perfect for somebody like her, who speaks to root cause - not just symptom - whereby 30 second answers on mainstream media just aren't suitable. I've listened to you for years. While we don't always agree, especially politically, we do share the perspective of 'no free will', which comes from such a deep place that it literally affects the way you see absolutely everything, and treat others. I can't even imagine you speaking to Marianne, or Cornel West (who is also super interesting to listen to, the way he ties jazz, the blues, coltrane, al green, etc, to the political and spiritual. Quite a fascinating figure too. I have no idea if you ever read these comments, and I'm not hopeful, but it would be great.

I think all people that are able to accurately define the long term context and implications inclusive of the growth plan they’re going to be following in the role as a parent should absolutely have kids. For those that cannot, to me it’s a totally sensible doubt to not be sure as to whether or not one wishes to have kids in fact if you can be so adamant as to the reasons why you can’t and the how’s that support all of that then I’d be eager to read them so that I personally understand why a person perfectly intellectually capable of understanding why they shouldn’t to such an in depth degree has actually made that decision. For everyone else, live and let live, if you prioritize your awareness by seeking to grow it beyond the known horizons then good on you and if you can’t, well to the extent you’re not causing any suffering live and let live aye. Very interesting podcast, this gals certainly a keeper for any guy lucky enough to have her.

Didn't want want kids my whole life until I changed my mind in my mid 30's. Having had both perspectives it's my opinion that the people who choose not to have kids are no doubt happy with their decision but nonetheless are missing out on a part of what the human experience has to offer. Not everyone wants to make the full journey and that's fine. Not everyone is fit for it and it might be a disaster if they pressed on -- that's fine. But the trail goes on and there are transformative experiences to be had further down the path. Even if I could, not in a million years would I go back in time and become the current version of myself without children. To current me that would seem like staying a teenager for the rest of my life.

I chose not too have kids , for those that want them, by all means . I would never imply that my choice is for everyone . However there is a bit of a blind spot about parenting that is hard to get at , but through listening to parents I have picked up a theme in some of them . Having kids can mean any internal.conflicts you have , go unresolved. Let's face it the hallmark of any good parent is sacrifice . Someone's needs come before your own . There is no off shift for a parent . I can come home and follow whatever mood I am in . Maybe I go to bed early , maybe I exercise. Just the simple act of doing nothing . Parents get that in short spurts . What I see happen is when the kids go out into the world you can find a person that has been carrying some underlying baggage that just kind of lingered behind the scene. Again , not applicable to everyone. I know I gave up certain things and experiences in my choice . There is no doubt of that , but to be perfectly honest I have no regrets . I have more freedom to be me

And noone talks about being financially, mentally, emotionally and spiritually stable before becoming a parent. How does one bring a child into the world and raise it and let go completely? Never to judge or be biased towards your own kid. I do strongly believe 'The best parents don't have kids'. 😅

@@user-gy1pu3gq3d what happened is world events that show you who a person really is. What you need to understand is this. Sam Harris has never worked a real job one day of his life. Sam Harris has lived his entire life in a literal ivory tower in Hollywood where he was born to famous, very wealthy parents who were actors and screenwriters for Hollywood. Imagine being born into that kind of life. Then imagine just how profoundly different that life is compared to the other 99% of society. Imagine how different your mind is when you've never wanted for anything at anytime in your life. Sam spent his 20s flying around the world and attending meditation retreats on his mom's dime. Most people have to work hard in their 20s to build a future that barely sustains their livelihoods. Sam never had to work. When he got back to the states he used his connections in Hollywood and his wealth to essentially buy his PhD. And if you study into his PhD thesis and compare that to other people in those fields who actually committed to those fields you'll see just how shaky Sams claim to expertise is considered in those fields. All of this leads up to my final point which is that Sam is hopelessly out of touch with normal people. This is why Sam can be smart enough to call out some of the bs of the democrats but still vote for them at all costs and mock and disparage anyone who doesn't vote for them. It's because Sam is so far out of touch from reality, so wealthy and safe that those horrific policies he supports never really affect his life. That's why he can sit in his ivory tower studio and dump on people who "do their own research" as they saw they livelihoods destroyed by the covid policies that took away their ability to earn an income and destroyed their savings. That's why Sam can't understand why people would vote for Trump. Because he doesn't understand how someone's life can be so difficult that they would do something crazy like vote for a man who might actually be able to do something different and give the working man a chance to work for a better life. These differences matter greatly and the last few years these differences came to a head as the normal working class man had a chance to briefly get their country back on track. And Sam didn't like that because the normal working man threatens the "science" and tech oligarchy that has formed and which works very well for people like Sam. I hope this provides some insight for you. It took me years to understand this about Sam.

@@synthesizerneil I think it is something deeper in him. I didn't grow up in poverty or with parents on drugs, but I can empathize with that experience. I can only live the life I have and everything else about my understanding of the world is based on observation and pattern recognition. Sam has just as much ability as I do to observe reality. The difference between us is that I don't lie about my political enemies and he does, and I don't tolerate lies from my political allies just because they are allies. I didn't get taken in by the Trump-Russia collusion narrative, not because I'm smarter than Sam, but because I am honest where he is not. I agree that Sam is driven by faith in expertise and that he is loathe to criticize the experts, though he knows they deserve it, because he does not want to contribute to the weakening of what he sees as crucial institutions. I take the position that I understood Sam to be taking in "Lying." I will describe reality as I see it and leave it to others to decide what that observation means to them. I will never attempt to manipulate their understanding of reality to suit my political goals.

Sam, why have you been making so many obviously biased political choices lately? Leaving twitter after Elon's purchase, recent views on freedom of speech, writing off RFK jr bc of issues that are not that big a deal- are potential side effects of vaccines really a large enough issue to write off a candidate? You seem to be captured by the DNC's talking points, i always thought you were a more independent thinker.

I did not like this conversation because I felt like Sam keeps on trying to hijack various topics to his experience set, even to the point of changing the subject. I'd rather hear a hard describe the phenomenon she is trying to explain in her book then to have Sam endlessly reframe a topic according to what happened to him at Starbucks and really get far field of what she's trying to convey.
