"Trans Panic Defense" Alive & Well in 2024 🙄 RIP Savannah Williams

Ойын-сауық

In a tragic case that has sparked outrage and activism, Savannah Williams, a 38-year-old transgender woman, was killed in Minneapolis in November 2023. Her murderer claimed he shot her after they had sex because she "made him feel suspicious" - a clear attempt to use the discriminatory "trans panic" legal defense. This horrific crime prompted Minnesota to finally ban the gay and trans panic defenses, but not before Savannah's loved ones and LGBTQ+ community had to mourn her senseless death. This thought-provoking video explores Savannah's life and legacy, the persistent epidemic of anti-trans violence, and the importance of the new Minnesota law while also critiquing how legal and cultural change often lags behind tragic events. It's a somber but necessary dialogue about protecting our most vulnerable, showing up for each other, and building a society free from hatred and bigotry.

The fact that trans panic defense isn't an immediate hate crime is appalling.

Not only that, it also suggests that the 'panicker' has all the self-control of a rampaging pit bull, since they are apparently prone to entering a berserker rage for the most trivial shadow of a reason, and that they should not be allowed to run around unsupervised for the safety of the general public.

Would a "religious panic" or "political panic" defense fly in court? "Your Honor, when I realized that the person I'd had sex with voted for Trump, the shame and disgust temporarily and uncontrollably INSAAAAAAAAANE!"

I would use this defense but I'd never be caught naked with a Maga. The shame that would bring? I wouldn't bear to live anymore

Right? Like "I was talking to this person, and they said something that caused me to panic, so my response was as to stab them - but I was panicking so it's fine, right?"

Before i ever realized I was trans i used to always cross dress on Halloween (that or dress as the Mad Hatter). When I was 21 I got all dolled up and looked really good. My friend was a professional and did an amazing job. I felt amazing, this led to me doing it more and more often and lead me to my true self. Side bar to the story I got in multiple altercations over that following year, Including a fight that very Halloween over a drink bought for me. This culminated in several men getting so mad they were planning to kill me behind the bar on my 22nd birthday. Lucky a bouncer heard and literally got me out of there. These were all men that over the previous months had bought me drinks or danced with me only to "Panic" over who I actually was. It is bonkers to me that people can have so much hate when we just want to live true and free and happy like everyone else. Life will always be a dumpster fire but we deserve to be dressed how we want around that fire. To Feel Whole.

Trans panic defense should result in a longer sentence since it is admission of it being a hate crime

I think it was Churchhill who said something along the line of, "America, after exhausting all other possible avenues, will always do the right thing." Add money to the mix and getting to the right thing nearly disappears into the distance, never to be seen. Much love to all in the USA.❤

Thank you Luxander!!!! I deeply appreciate that you covered this story. Savannah deserved so much better, she was fierce, I wish I got to know her better. Our community in Minnesota has gone through tragedy and trauma seeing the ban on the *"Gay and Trans Panic" defense be passed. It pains us all deeply knowing Savannah's murderer was allowed to set the narrative with their defense, that this bill was not passed soon enough to prevent his defense case (The trans panic defense gives the power to the perpetrator and puts the victim on defense - any of us can be called a sex worker or predator after being murdered in hopes of a sympathetic jury. Savannah was robbed of her story) A week after Savannah's murder, news stations had doxxed our trans support community and host. We had to cancel our candlelight vigils and have security at our meetings due to threats (from mostly out of state). In the months to come showing up at the capitol for rallies and hearings. Supporting our sisters who took lead in pushing this legislation through. Having to endure the Republican discourse arguing against our rights and protections all the while calling us "men" and accusing us of being predators. A lot of trauma and courage went into this small victory, and it doesn't even make us safer. I really wish more people would cover this and talk about these discussions, promote the importance of our in-person communities. This is a part of a larger more uncomfortable conversation that deeply affects queer folk of the most marginalized communities. Our communities are stronger together and there is beauty in numbers! Thank you so much Lux!!!! This has been a wildly difficult time. This tragedy has brought our community together in beautiful ways and I wish Savannah could see it. I have too many emotions going on, probably typed too much. Thank you, thank you, thank you! **Can't forget this bill covers for all panic related defenses based on sexual orientation and identity.

The trans-panic is pretty much what I think comes out of the toxic masculinity. The peer-pressure induced homophobia from the social fear of being perceived as gay in homophobic macho-circles, and the threat of ego for thinking you were "tricked." The longest trope against transwomen that I think exists. Where as I don't usually see this as much if at all from women who knowingly are partners to transmen or transwomen. Women who aren't homophobic are more likely to identify as pansexual in acceptance of that, than men are.

Like warning labels, many laws exist because some innovative human found a new way to be a jack-donkey. Sometimes the law can anticipate problems, sometimes it can't, and sometimes it *should* anticipate but doesn't because the people in power lack the perspective and/or political willpower to act.
