I do work for a university, but I'm not a professor. :P Heck I'm not even an auto mechanic! I studied Chemistry. I fix computers. Auto mechanics is just one of those things in life I pursued because I was interested in it and learned it because I had to. I'd publish a book but people don't read anymore. :D

I had the same issues when I picked up a megan racing short shifter(OEM one broke). I did the same as you and installed the shifter base bushings, and bronze shifter cable bushings, as well as add metal material with a welder just as you did. I STILL have side to side slop and little front to back. It drives me insane!

Check to see if it's on the shifter axis, or in the transmission linkage bushings under the hood. It takes 2 people to check this, but you'll know when you see the slop. If the slop is in the shifter on the pivots, disassemble it and make sure it has bushings, and that they're not worn out. The factory shifter bushings cause this when they wear out. Some aftermarket shifters require that you swap them over from your stock shifter. The B&M doesn't replace the lower portion of the shifter assembly, just the stick... so if the Megan's like mine, check the bushings in the thing it bolts to, and the transmission linkage. People sell shifter linkage bushings on ebay and at a few of the popular speed shops.

I do have the bushings on mine, it came in just as you B&M did. I have a small worry that it may be the linkages themselves. I will check for sure once the weather gets a bit warmer. Thanks for the tip and all the videos!

On a car I used to own, I doubled-up the pivot bushings to fix this on the stock shifter. I had broken another one, bought a used one, and had an extra set. You can order them as a stand-alone dealer part if you want to try it. Another alternative might be an additional nylon washer to take up the slop of the center shaft. Metal parts will bind here.

I am having problems with MB829013 on my B&M shifter like yours. I can't seem to get it to slide into the B&M shifter itself but it sets fine over the MB870379. It just seems a smidgen too big for the shifter. I though it was broken but it is made like that with the splice in it so I gotta order another one because I threw it away lol. Help?

But everyone that drives it acts like the need to use all their strength. Where can you get a short shifter, I was looking a a few a couple years ago but they disappeared.

I drive a 98 GS 5 speed, and it keeps popping out of 5th, it either comes half way out and makes a terrible noise or comes clean out into Neutral, would replacing these bushings stop that? Is it popping out because of the slack in it? I have a bad enough clutch and this isn't helping. Thanks

***** It's a cable shifter. Chances are your transmission isn't the problem. Check your linkages, tie-down brackets (the things with the clips that secure your cables), and the actual shifter bushings inside the center console. Find the slop and you'll find the problem. ;) If it were solid linkage, you'd have only half a reason to worry. Keyword: cable shifter

Check all of your shifter bushings both at the shifter and at the transmission... and check all the things that hold the shift cables down in the engine bay... and do it with the mind-set of "if either of these are loose and sloppy, so too will be the shifter." There's supposed to be a little plastic plug that rides in a cup at the base of the shifter that takes the slack out of the lefty-righty. There's plastic bushings inside the shifter cables at the transmission. Dry rot's a bitch.

hi, my question involves the beginning part of your video (and anyone who can help, i'd like to hear your input.). im almost certain that the bushings for the pivot bearing on my 2g needs replaced. (p#:MB829013 in your video.) the sad thing is, only one result comes up when i type in the p# and it comes up for 1994 (its on mopar parts overstock.) and anything else i search for it (or what resembles it anyway...) is a set of polyurethane bushings. (heres a link to a set""" www.ebay.com/itm/311539261054 """.) Do you think that those would work and fix my issue.? (i have slight side to side movement and a fair bit of forward to back.. and my setup is stock but i plan on swapping to a shortshift as well, and plan on just doing EVERYTHING at once the first time around.) i can not for the likes of me find a set of metal ones, but the way i figured is that if these are the correct one's, i'll just go with them and replace them if i have troubles in the future. thanks in advance for the help.!!

  • @Jafromobile

+queeneboy566 Those are to replace the bushings underneath the shifter plate where the shifter assembly bolts to the car. Those aren't the pivot bearings or pivot bushings for the shifter cables. Do yourself a favor, go back on ebay and search "DSM shifter bushings" There's you'll find every upgrade that can be made to take the slop out of your shifter. Cable ends and the baseplate bushings in your desired metal of choice. Get someone in the interior to shift through the gears with the car off while you stand over the engine bay and look for loose bracketry. Nothing feels worse than the shifter cables flopping around while you're trying to shift. Forward-backward is usually the cable bushings or engine bay bracketry. The side-side slop is usually axis bushings on the actual shifter assembly. To check the shifter axis bushings, you have to take your center console out. It's usually the pivot point on the gear shift handle assembly flopping around. They've also been known to break loose while driving. Done it 3x.
