Trans & Clutch 4 - Installing The Clutch

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What you wanted to know about clutches but were afraid to ask.
I'm putting a ACT MB1-XTSS on the car in this video. Step height, clutch dowell pins, bolt part numbers, alignment and various clutch parts are described in this video. It's part of an all-inclusive drivetrain tech piece I'm working on that's broken up into sections to maintain focus on the individual processes involved.

    God is so good. I watched this video to see how the clutch disk is placed compared to the pressure plate. I saw your starter plate part and I almost kicked myself. I quickly unbolted the thread locker and realized I needed tocheck because of the horror stories that I remember. Wow man thank you so much. And thank God for this channel. God send. Yeshua gang approved.

    I'm sure someone else commented on this, but the starter is the same on both AWD and FWD. The bell housing sets the starter gear spacing and the ring gear is really the only thing that is different.

    I think it would be worth mentioning here that one should ONLY use flywheel bolts when securing it to the crankshaft. They are special bolts and you will not find them at your local hardware store. Now, I am speaking about the ones on a 3SI but I would bet they are the same design on the DSM's since the transmissions look almost identical. Feel free to confirm this but the ones on 3SI's have a tapered shaft at the heads of the bolt.

    I'm trying to install a clutch for my AT to MT conversion and there is a 4mm gap between the flywheel and pressure plate cover. Is that normal? I've already tightened down the bolts successfully just not sure if that's the way to do it. No tutorial video or images I've seen mention a gap. If it's not normal what is your advice?

    Q: I have a "90 Talon TSI AWD and I installed the same clutch and pressure plate that you did in the video. When I mated the transmission to the block there is a massive amount of play with the clutch fork. I can push it all the way back to the transmission and it doesn't even touch the clutch fingers at all. Should I shim the clutch fork or is there another problem to address? Also after installing the clutch, the fingers seemed almost flat instead of domed. Is this normal for this clutch?

I bought a comp clutch lightweight for my early 92 6bolt and the teeth arent meshing with the starter it seems like the starter isnt coming far enough away from the engine to mesh up, i checked the teeth of the original against my new one i rolled my old one on the new one they seems the same just the starter dosent seem like its going to reach into the bell housing far enough... please respond thank you for all these guides

    I looked in a Chilton manual and it turns out it is 98 ft. lbs. I don't usually use Chiltons manuals, but after seeing it in there, I have to say it's probably right. Many mechanics depend on Alldata for their repairs; which means that there must be a bunch of DSM's out there with under-torqued flywheels. Unbelievable that a reputable company like Alldata has wrong information in it! Anyway, I popped my slave cylinder like you did and have to replace it.

    A terrific series! I had a new clutch fitted here in Thailand on my Suzuki Vitara......the fulcrum fingers were worn away so replaced all, disc, friction disc, thrust bearing and cable (yes cable). Since then I get a hint of grating on changing hear and am told it could be the friction disc was not aligned properly so been learning so I understand before it goes back in to get fixed. I've just been on a long trip with it imperfect, it drives, but it's not right, and I'm told it's called clutch drag though when stationary one can't detect any torque going through when the pedals down so I'm still not quite clear on how the slight grating or clicking get to be. BTw....What do you use to speed up time on your videos? Thanks again!

    I use iMovie. A 9 year old copy of it. Not because it's the best. But because it's simple and it works. Miraculously, a 9 year old application like iMovie can work with 1080/30 HD video sources. This format didn't exist when the application was built. I don't think it's clutch drag. I think it's your throwout bearing. The only other thing I'd think might be a pilot bearing, if your car has one. If it makes noise with your foot off the pedal, it's the pilot bearing. If it makes noise with your foot on the clutch, it's the throwout bearing. If it makes a clicking sound only when you press the pedal, it could be your clutch adjustment. Hopefully it's the latter because either of the other 2 options require basically doing the whole job over again to get to those bearings. Last thing I got... my old original 1st-build super-shiny Injen turbo intake is in an Eclipse somewhere in Thailand. I sold it on DSMtrader to someone in Thailand.

    ***** Thanx for the reply Jafro.... I just look up throwout bearing and we call it a thrust bearing. But that's been replaced the old one had worn into the fingers on the cover plate. No noises apart from maybe a hint on when the gears are very-slightly-grating, more like a slight burring or clicking, on a gear change.....but nothing from clutch I think. BTW as for your software are you saying you take the full movie in HD then iMovie cuts out and throws away most of the frames? Just asking as I tend to use my iPad for video and the memory is limited. The pure unadulterated ipad video clip seems to use an awful lot of bytes many more than an equivalent time on a Piratebay type video!

  • @jjenson2006
    @jjenson200611 жыл бұрын

    Jafro, I'm doing my clutch right now. I see you torque your flywheel bolts to 98 ft-lbs and I also read it mentioned on forums. According to Alldata, they should be torqued to 55 ft. lbs.; which is half that. Did you get your number out of a manual? I just want to make sure because it really sucks when you snap a bolt over-torquing.

    When purchasing a used pressure plate, should one be concern about non-centered tob wear on the pp fingers? I has seen this on most, if not all, used pp for sale and I have a suspicion this leads to broken fingers on the pp... Oh and thanks for your uploads, definitely going to guide me through my clutch installation.

    Ryan Tucker I would re-use one of my own, but I personally would never buy someone else's used clutch. I might take it off their hands, but unless it was a twin-disc with its own flywheel, I would keep my wallet in my pocket. I wouldn't risk breaking it in on 2 different flywheels. Clutch tolerances are in thousandths of an inch. Edit: Yes, it's true I re-used the GSX pressure plate on the Hyundai Elantra. I also had both flywheels cut to .610 step height first, and know I only have a thousand miles and 2 dozen drag passes on it.

    no loctite on the pressure plate bolts? did you ever have any problem with them backing out?

  • @Jafromobile

    @Jafromobile

    7 жыл бұрын

    I've never had a pressure plate back off, but that's not saying you shouldn't use the blue loctite. These bolts don't receive very much torque. They've got captive lock washers, and if everything's balanced and you have a good clutch that doesn't chatter, then they should never back out. I've had chattery clutches and they've always stayed put.

  • @Jafromobile

    @Jafromobile

    6 жыл бұрын

    The 1/1000 of an inch can be compensated for with proper clutch adjustment, so .609" isn't wrong. You should be able to compensate for that. less than .608 would start causing problems. You might run out of room for the clutch disc springs and the pressure plate springs to operate if that were tighter. You just need enough room for that clutch to fully disengage and not interfere with the springs. You can test all of that before putting it on the street with my clutch adjustment video. :)

    so why have the tool? Coz you should be checking the the machinest's work before you assemble. Machinests are just maching to the spec's that you give them. You should still hold them accountable for their work. Not just ASSUME that they did what they said they would. If i had done this during my current build, my motor would have failed again due to my alignbore. ALWAYS check your verify that your machinist did their work correctly. :)
