That would be funny. I re-listened to it, at 48-seconds. He does say 'Take her with you!'--- and the other voice says her name "Nidia." Now, that's not to say I'm not an idiot; it's just not what was said at the launch (at least, not what was said out loud....)

I carry hundreds of pounds of water or sand. If a balloon pops, I drop a corresponding amount of water. The water falls harmlessly to earth, like so much rain. That offsets the loss of lift from the failed balloon, and I fly on.

I wonder if people a couple thousand years from now will look back on this video and be pissed about how much of that precious element Helium was used up... Did they or can they salvage and reuse most of that helium though?

Unfortunately helium is so light that it tends to gradually drift out of our atmosphere and be lost to space, so if we keep doing stuff like this, supplies of helium on earth will eventually run out

Yes. You need a pilot's license, just like with an airplane or helicopter. The specific US FAA rating is "Lighter than Air: Free Balloon"

Actually, when flying a balloon, pilots do spit off the side. It is how you see what the winds are below you. It is extremely common. Another way to do is is to spray a little shaving cream, or drop little rolled-up tissues--- to see what the low-level winds are doing. But, most balloon pilots spit-- to see where the spit goes, so they know what the wind below them is doing.

Hydrogen gives mildly more lift initially, but it also expands and contracts more than helium--- which reduces the duration of the flight. (When night comes, and the lifting gas cools, and the gas contracts....the balloons become smaller....so the displacement is reduced....so lift is lost....so you have to drop sand/water ballast to stay aloft. The trick when choosing a lifting gas is that hydrogen contracts more than helium. With hydrogen, you have to drop MORE sand/water ballast at night to keep flying. Hydrogen contracts more than helium, and more lift is lost during nighttime cooling. Helium is much better for long duration manned flight.)
