Trangia 27-4HA Unboxing & 1st use 🌳 Bacon & Egg Roll, New Camp Cooker Review with my Shiba Inu

Спорт

Trangia 27-4HA unboxing. A trial of my new methylated spirit camp cookset with hard anodised pots and windshield and a non-stick frying pan, and comes with the controversial kettle! After unboxing I test the cooker out with a bacon and egg breakfast and coffee for a full review.
This cook-set replaces my old (approx. 40 years) Trangia 25-2UL (don't think it had that exact designation at the time it was made, but that's what they call the model now).
Today I had Salty, my Japanese Shiba Inu along to help with a taste test of the bacon and eggs; he considers himself a connoisseur!

The hardest part of any adventure is getting yourself Out of the Door! Almost all of us live busy lives, have other commitments, and have a limit to the funds with which to pursue the adventures we dream of.
But there are so many adventures that can be accessible to us if we just get Out that Door and make a start.
You don't need the latest and most fancy equipment, you don't need a huge bank balance, you don't need superhuman abilities and you don't need weeks of free time!
There are so many adventures, not far from where you live, that require only the the most basic equipment and that may only take a few hours - the rewards of getting Out that Door are waiting for you!
Equipment I use (note - it's all good quality gear, but in most cases not the most expensive option; fun doesn't need to be super expensive!):

I'm a stove addict and have several Trangias. I love them. I've been working for well over a year converting all of my favorite meals to Trangia meals, and hope to add some adventure stories and make it all a cookbook. Real meals, none of that fancy crap influencers try to push

A tip I was given. The non-stick of hard anodized aluminium benefits from seasoning the pans. It only takes a few minutes to season the pan. Smear a little vegetable or corn oil (not olive or canola. Olive burns, canola can leave sticky patches) and wipe most of the oil out. Put the pan on high heat till it smokes, then let it cool a bit, then buff out any remaining oil with a kitchen towel. NB if you don't wipe out most of the oil before you heat it you will get a sticky film in patches on the inside of the pan. If this happens you need to wash it out with warm soapy water and green scourer. Then start again. I know this from experience.

Keeping the stove inside the yellow bag prevents any electrolysis between the stove and the aluminum kettle.

Yeah that's completely correct, I should have explained that better! I'm still relatively new to this, and struggle a little with talking to the camera naturally! The bag prevents dis-similar metal (or galvanic) corrosion should the burner leak or moisture get in which could cause the fuel/moisture to become an electrolyte, the aluminium pans to become an anode and the brass burner a cathode. In my 'day job' I'm an aircraft engineer, so aluminium corrosion is very much something I should have thought to explain!

Thanks for the video. I'm a Trangia only addict.Your vid was one of the best demos with no faffing about. I've a 27 & a 25. My 27 has a non-stick fry pan from the time when they produced it with an attractive bright red outer. I also have the multi-disc and wouldn't be without it. You may find you get a lot less stick when you deduce the flame for frying. I recommend their triangular grid that fits in the windshield and allows for small diameter pans (e.g. coffee percolator). All the best Paul in the Midlands

Totally agree about reducing the heat, however, I wanted to test out the non-stick coating, so pushed the heat a bit to see if it would stick. As I believe I said in the video I bought a red non-stick pan to go with the original Trangia I had that was stolen from my car years ago. This purchase was inspired by that old kit.

Great content! 👍 This HA version is I think the best looking Trangia stove on the market. Absolutely gorgeous. I would have loved to buy this HA series but in my country they are completely out of stock, sadly. Yesterday arrived the UL version which I decided to buy fearing that it will go out of stock as well and given the times we are living in...never know what the future beholds. I'm expecting more videos like that in the future. Greetings from Romania

Trangia cook sets are pretty nice. Especially in windy conditions. I will say cooking with your legs wrapped around the cooker is a good way to ruin it end a trip. And careful with that tarp. Anyways I might get me a proper trangia set like that with the anodized finish. Safer and tougher.

👍 nice .. thanks for sharing. I have the Mini Trangia 28T with the non-stick pan. Turning the burner down using the simmer ring allows for a more gently-cooked egg. Kettle .. agreed .. more civilized and practical 😏. My kettle is a Trangia look-alike from another cook set. That, together with the Trangia Burner (or one of a myriad of others .. bought or home-grown) and a little folding tripod made from SS Bicycle Spokes and 2mm Aluminium Ferrules makes for a nice little kit. Should I need extra capacity for morning Oats / whatever, my water bottle nests nicely into a SS GSI Mug, taking up not much additional footprint in the pack. 'Dog Exhaustion' .. Bacon is a sure fire antidote. My little Mali-Poo, she suffers from the same malady 😏. Take care ..

  • @outthedooradventure

The multidisc - which is the grey plastic disc with the holes in - goes between the frying pan and the rest of the pans and the windshield. I use it to replace the clear plastic disc that comes as packaging. The multidisc also acts as a strainer, a chopping board and can be put under the windshield to stop it sinking into snow! I find it generally really useful, but the fact it protects my non-stick frying pan is quite a big part of why I got it. Since this video the new trangia has had a good number of meals cooked on it and the pans are still looking good. I definitely had the heat too high for cooking bacon on this occasion though - 1/4 closed simmer ring is about right for bacon I've since found.

I’ve only been using Trangia burners, since forever. I wonder why you don’t use a non stick fry pan with your order Trangia set? There is Titanium Trangia kit on the market and I have a burner that I bought with Evernew kit some years ago. I use that and the kettle too! In a one person system. I have far too many cook kits to be honest, but they don’t cost the earth really and I do enjoy using them. Thanks for the vid.

The older trangia was bought second hand when short on cash in my early twenties, to replace a superb trangia my parents bought me as a child, that was stolen from my car. The set I had as a child had the old red non-stick frying pan. I treated myself to the 27-4HA now that I can afford the best (for me) Trangia. I really enjoy using the trangia system. I've not seen the titanium version though.

I probably would normally, but struggle to frame the shot comfortably with it off the tarp. I wouldn't do it at all with most other cookers, but the Trangia is very stable, so unless you spill fuel when filling the risk is very low.

I don’t really want to be the one to write this but so many comments are this as a good demonstration of the right way to use this kit.🫣 I’m adding here that I am sure your intentions are good.😬 However; stove on the tarp - risk of melting/fire - sitting with (bare) legs round the cooker - how is that good practice? - pushing down the aeropress at arms length is dodgy let alone while leaning over a burning stove that has hot fat in it I don’t need to explain this do I? -topping up with fuel… tell us you let it cool right down first (top tip: carry two burners for continuity in heat…), cracking the egg on the edge of a hot pan wile holding it steady with one bare finger moving the whole kit with bare hands while it’s lit is asking for trouble. Then the washing up, what happened to leave no trace? What will the person camping downstream of you think when their water filter clogs with your cooking oil and egg waste? The creature in the woods may have been drawn in to the smell of the waste you dumped in the stream. I did say you’re well intentioned but buddy if you’re doing a how to video please do it right.

I'm certainly not perfect, the seating position and tarp were largely to get a reasonable camera angle - and not quite how I'd usually do it - so in hindsight, probably not the best presentation. However, I wasn't a 'how to', more of my thoughts on the first use of the stove and the reasons behind my choice. I'm definitely not the person to follow for best practice - I learnt most of what I do in the 1980s when 'best practice' didn't have the same attention is has now.
