That looks great Marvin, maybe you could extend the column of the piller drill, you could use a large old fire place harth and get it cut in half reversing the base of the drill with 2" to 4" packing under it. With 4 bolts through everything for the drill and cross slide it would work and be quite flat and solid with the ability to shim any error. The printing the shrinkage rate for nylon in plastic injection moulding is around 1.6% so just add 2% to the dimensions to help with the sizes or work out from just correcting from your first sample.

For now, I will be using this for small projects. This whole thing started with me being curious as to just how good the cheap Chinese tables were. With that said, your idea about extending the column is the best way to add a bit more utility. This would involve getting a new pipe for the column, one that is longer than the current one. Of course, I could also go insane and make the drill press into a machine where the there is an inner and outer column and then put in a gear drive to change the column height. Either that or just find a cheap vertical mill.

If you turn the base 180° and slim it the thickness of the double cross slides you in theory be able to get full travel or more than before on the X Y movement but you might need to shorten the column/pillar aswell.
