VIDEO: A chilly couple of hours during the morning rush hour at Slough station in Berkshire, operated by Great Western Railway and the Elizabeth Line.

The main line between London Paddington and Maidenhead did serve the town of Slough from as early as 1838 but there was no station due to the original Railway Act that authorised the line's construction featured a clause which forbade the construction of a station within three miles of Eton College without the permission of the school's Provost or Fellowship. The clause was eventually repealed and a proper station was soon built and opened on 1 June 1840. The station would often be used by Queen Victoria whenever she needed to travel to Windsor Castle until the construction of the branch to Windsor & Eton Central in 1849.
For a brief time between 1883 and 1885, Slough was served by the District Railway (later London Underground's District Line) which operated services between Windsor and Mansion House.
The original station was re-sited on 8 September 1884, 200 metres to the west of the original.
The station has underwent significant upgrades over the last few years, owing to electrification, such as platforms being extended to accomodate 12-car class 387s and an accessible footbridge at the eastern end of the station. In December 2019, TfL Rail, later the Elizabeth Line, took over the operation of services to Reading which currently run from Abbey Wood via Central London.
