Training Without Conflict® Podcast Episode Twenty-Nine: Edgar Scherkl
This episode was a long time in the making.
I was finally able to sit down with Edgar Scherkl to talk about Belgian Malinois, the history of Schutzhund, the German Korung, judging in competition, and the current situation in the IGP world community.
The podcast is available now on KZread, Apple Music, Spotify, and all other major podcast platforms!
I’m certain that if you have been around Schutzhund (IGP) long enough, you are already highly aware of Edgar Scherkl.
For those of you that don't know who he is, let me summarize his insane accomplishments:
• Edgar has won 20 Championships with a few different dogs.
• He has won the FCI World Championship 2 times and the FMBB World Championship 2 times as well!
• Edgar is also a World Level judge and has judged many national events in Germany, as well as the FMBB World Championship 3 times, one of which being the Judge supervisor.
• As a helper, Edgar did the helper work at the 2000 FMBB where my dog Django and I won Vice World Champions. He has been a helper several times at national championships in Germany as well.
• Edgar is the current president of the German Malinois Club (DMC), he is a current FMBB board member and also a previous board member of the FCI Working Commission.
I have known Edgar for over 20 years so we had a lot to talk about!
The conversation took us back in time to many great moments in our past, and we also talked about the future of IGP and dog breeding.
Enjoy the conversation and don’t forget to support my channel by subscribing and sharing.

Edgard Scherck is One of the best dogsport man for IGP discipline ,with Legendary Knut Fuchs.I saw Knut with Maicono this year in Nova Gorica FCI and he was really a mix of High drive, a great show of a perfect symbiosys with the dog in obedience and above all protection. Just to see him to compete Is Always a good motivation to pay the ticket. And Edgard Scherkl has the same passion for great dogs and sport.I always saw A desert and Cayman in the First yars of 2000. And these two dogs were two of the best dogs that I saw in my Life at world Championship FCI. Cayman really a super dog. Thanks Edgard for the spectacle that you presented to the fans of this sport in Wavre 2008 ,Belgium.Unforgettable winners you and Cayman. One of the leader dogs of IPO,now IGP,sport. Great Edgard,One of the leaders of High sport' dogs. Alessandro Difonso, Mailand,Italy

Really nice interview. Of course I had to do a search for Edgar Scherkl and wow, when I get the time this will keep me busy 🤣🤣🤣 One thing that I wanted to mention in response to you always bringing up "You Tube" dog trainers in a negative way was that I found you after falling down the You Tube dog training rabbit hole! I was listening to some interviews posted by another dog trainer (one that you had a on podcast btw) and your name kept coming up, so I googled you! I think many people like me, novices, certainly inexperienced, are just looking to "fix" our dogs....fast! I think we all want to do right by our dogs, and I'm so glad I landed here!

I know this isn't your wheelshed anymore but you used to train service dogs in SF if i recall correctly. Any chance of getting service dog trainers on board to talk about them?

It is very difficult for them to come to the podcast. Depending on the service type of dog training there is no doubt that aversives would be used at some point or another. Specially when we talk about guide dogs where reliability is a must. The big organizations are non-profit they make money from donations and they must follow the narrative that is politically correct today or go bankrupt. Do you have anyone in mind that will have the courage to come on the podcast?

As always, such an interesting interview! It would be amazing to see more sports dogs out and about showing off their obedience to the general public. All it takes is walking your dog and being nice to people who appreciate dogs. This will do a lot for the sport and good training.

Is always enjoyable to learn about the past of dogsports what do you believe about mondio ring and other ring sports? I always had that sense that when it comes to tracking protection and obedience igp goes deeper?

Thank you! Any chance you would do a podcast with a sheepdog handler? Itwould be so interesting to see what sheepdog and protection sports training can learn from each other :)
