Training the walk pirouettes

🐴Teaching Duke the start of working pirouettes, Why?
In Working Equitation you have the pen.
This is at walk, you ride round a full loop in one direction. Showing good rhythm and bend, exit and if possible at Novice level show a half working pirouette, re enter the pen in the other direction.
This is something I’m keen to try and gain more marks on. It also teach’s Duke to learn to sit and engage, lighten the forehand and control the shoulders. In years to come, I’d love this to be a Grand Prix canter piro…
Through Dukes training, the left rein has been one I’ve needed to support more and work on, braking everything down In-Hand and then onto ridden. Like us we are either left or right handed.
When teaching the start of this process In-Hand, Duke was happy to step his quarters towards me on the right, with a light controlled forehand. On the left it was a big deal. He would just fall onto the left shoulder and just couldn’t get his head round it. It took months to brake it down into just one step and keep correcting the left shoulder, making a big fuss of him even if it was half a thought of a step in the right direction.…
I appreciate he needs to be softer and we are working on this. In this video you will see all the work on the left rein, only for show as it’s been such a bake though for us.
This work has helped Duke in many ways. His starting to learn a little collection, its lightening that left shoulder and really helping our canter transition.
I’m enjoying this training so much and find Duke very rewarding. He too loves the brain work and challenges, along with all the fuss and cuddles.
Look out for the next video and challenge we have been working on…
