Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Oscar isn't technically a "newcomer," but at 10 years or so in the game, he's making a name for himself among the legends. Oscar has competed in Schutzhund / IPO / IGP and over the past few years has made quite a name for himself. He is the two time Southwest Regional IPO Champion. He's also an accomplished trainer in other bite sports as well as in the pet dog world. He's a very versatile handler, trainer, decoy and dog lover!

More important than that, Oscar is a good guy that I met 10+ years ago. I knew I liked him then, and I haven't changed my mind. He's a good person - heart and soul - and I enjoy chatting with him, I like the way he works dogs and consider him a friend.
In this chat we talk about so many things including his beginnings, getting started, the various sports he competes and trains in and a whole lot more. This chat will get you to know a guy I've known and liked for quite some time.

I love how Oscar works his dogs. I respect what he said about 'not feeling good with his training session if he's "yanking and cranking" and to train each dog differently.

This discussion pretty much helped me to finally decide whether I want to go forward with any Schutzhund type training with my Working line GSD pup. Very interesting. Thanks to both of you for all you do!

Interesting topic, what's ur thoughts on the subject? There obviously a big difference in the temperament of a cane corso in comparison to a malinois or a GSD u have to be a lot more patient and a lot less corrections so to speak Also the corsos mature really slow the big lumbering body of even the most athletic corso has many more structural weaknesses than the mals and alike soft tissue injuries are very common in the corsos in dog sport and ur look around 7000 dollars for a ACL reconstruction if u blow it out The prey drive is much lower than a mal, so u have to use frustration to bring power into the obedience and the corsos have much more defensive aggression which can be tricky to tap into if ur training ur own dog on ur own as u can't really create the correct mindstate for the dog to open the defense aggression don't get angry in training or general they shut down much easier than a mal or GSD and don't bounce back as fast in general one bad session can set ur relationship ship and training back a fair bit I've introduced ecollar pressure to own dog over existing well understood commands nepopo styles to condition it and hes much more resilient now to the ecollar and can use it as neg reinforcement to teach behaviour now

Great to hear a trainer say "he didn't want the dog doubting himself". So important that the dog has self belief. Flexibility as a trainer is so important. To get stuck to just one method is a road to a closed mind and a stop in growth and learning. I do not agree with docking and cropping. It is not how Nature intended those dogs to look. Had one dog that would never hold a wooden dumbell but she would bring it back by pushing it with her paw, she was my first dog at 6, so I was guided by my trainers . None of them could find a way either : ). Lovely open minded young man . I am subbed to him already on KZread but wish he'd post more . I agree Robert, no one gets to use an e collar on my dog or anything else, I protect her just as much as she does me.Team work. Thanks Guys. Loved listening. Thank you both.

What a GREAT INTERVIEW! He has such an interesting perspective. My three yr old GSD is getting better, and better, and better. Some things are slow, some things he gets super quickly, and sometimes he takes a step or two backward (ex., started walking off leash and throwing balls, he started forging ahead a bit on "heel"-- but was able to fix over a couple days with gentle corrections). I loved when Oscar said that 3 months of Obedience training really isn't "squat"; might be discouraging for some, but I found that comment ENCOURING. To hear a top level trainer basically talk about progress vs perfection, love his dogs at all stages of progress, and have a sense of real humility is AWESOME!!💖

EACH person who is considering getting a dog for a first time should look around this channel. Info witch is provided for free is WAYY more than enough for each person find a common points with their dogs. I have watched this channel while rising my dog, Presa canario and cane carso mix. I was able to rise aware friendly dog. Who weights as much a my Gf. Gentle giant with kids, friendly with friendly people, obedient and can take a bite if he is asked to do it.

We need a new episode with oscar, more juicy training talk like using frustration tapping into the dogs emotions to bring the flashy in drive kind of obedience Stuff like Dogs naturally having different grips and how to bring the most out of a dogs natural gripping behaviour and how to also make adjustments to the gripping behaviour The difference between the dog trained in defence vs the dog trained in prey and the intersection where the 2 drives meet and how to transit between the 2 in the training Also stefan schaub another incredible breeder of German shepherds and world renowned trainer also he's German and I know u German in ur pedigree so to speak 🤣

I'll be honest: my working line German Shepherd NEEDED e collar training. I started looking into 2 week board & trains, but the more I learned, the less comfortable I felt having someone boot camp my dog on e collar where I couldn't observe, no matter how $$$ or highly rated. I started studying e collar training on my own for months, started putting it on him without using it for a month before I even started testing the lowest level he responded to. My e collar training took a whole lot longer than 2-4 weeks, but I'm comfortable I did it kindly and humanely. Initially, I only used it to reinforce recall (a couple months), now I do use it at low levels at times to reinforce other already trained behaviors, but not often. I can walk my formerly hyper, prey animal crazed, dog reactive boy on and off leash without pulling or loss of control. He'll run ahead 10-15 ft max off leash, turn and look at me frequently for "permission", if he sees a rabbit and thinks about running after it, I can say "Uh-uh" and he'll leave it alone (generally without any e collar stim). I can bring him back both to a heel, but also just back to a 3-6 ft range immediately just with a "heel" command or a casual "Not Too Far" command (I didn't intentionally teach "Not Too Far", but apparently I say it alot, and he comes back to 3-6 ft whenever I say it). Same thing if he's briefly considering running after a dog. I can say "uh-uh", recall him, praise & treat, and I'm apparently more exciting than the distraction. I would never want some trainer zapping my boy unnecessarily on high levels, it's unnecessary.
